I was thining about starting wood elves, or bretonnians... I have now idea what to choose. Each army has great models, strengths and weaknesses, so I just want to ask you guys, are woodelves better than bretonnia or no, just from your experiance; and how they would do generaly agaisnt most armies.
It all comes down to style of play, really. Bretonnian tactics tend to be a lot more straightforward than WE tactics - just point a big unit of knights at something and charge. Of course, skirmishing screeners, rock-lobbers, and peasants also come into play, but you're typically looking at devastating charges with lots of horses.
Wood Elves, on the other hand, are less about individual unit strengths as they are combining strengths to compensate for perceived weaknesses. WE's have unrivaled maneuverability, which allows you to push your enemy into combats that are more favorable to you.
I recently played in a map-based campaign featuring my wood elves, bretonnians, dwarves, ogres, and empire. Early in the campaign the bretonnian player and I decided to team up (mostly because we were sick of fighting each other). The amusing part came when it was time for us to come up with our strategy. My suggestions all involved feigned flights and baiting to push our enemies into fighting on our terms. The bretonnian player just wanted to charge in to battle - this, to me, kind of defines the difference between the two armies. In the end, a combination of the two strategies resulted in our team dominating the campaign.
So are Wood Elves better? Inherently, no. It really comes down to which style of play you prefer. If you're anything like me and want to pick the army with the coolest figures, then the wood elves win hands down - nobody has cooler models than WE.
Do this if you haven't already.
Read each army's book. Talk to people at your store who plays them. Look through the GW catalog and decide what minis you like better. Maybe someone would even let you try a game with them.
Plus, you can proxy models. Do you already have a fantasy army?
If you've already done those things, then tell me to shut it. But in my gaming experience, those are important things to people.
Yeah, David, I have play tested both armies, and just cant decide. I'm probably going to go for the bretonnians purely because of the heraldric theme, but I'm not 100% sure though. I do love how Wood Elves play, and the stratagies they are capable of. Ofcourse a good experianced Warhammer player can make any army work for him.
I also want to pick the WE because this Wood Elf thread is wa..ay more active then that bretonnian one
Thanks for the replys.
On the other hand, I have to say that I really like the Bretonnian models too. They are a cool army that has a true mideveal feel. The heardry is nice too, though I would make all my knights ride under one banner, all the same. Awesome unity look. IMO
