How do you guys deal with Chaos using Eternal Guards? Are they efficient in holding out a combat? My main concern is my opponent's minimal 4 chariots in a 1000 - 2000pts game. After looking over their stats, it doesnt look too appealing I am still new at this, so please shed on light on why they are being loved by so many Wood Elves players.
Anima Tactics - try it out!
I am not a real fan of Eternal Guard but the main reason some people like them is for the Stubborn rule they get when led by a noble or highborn. The are also one of 2 units that is able to have a significant amount of static combat resolution.
Against a 4 chariot army you probably wont have any EG left after they hammer in. Only 2 should be able to get in (maybe 3) but that is still 2D6+2 impact hits and 4 Strength 5 attacks and 4 strength 4 attacks. Potentially they can cause a lot of carnage.
Yeah, I'd try to keep those chariots off the EG. Use eagles and Warhawks to misdirect them. If the chariots are frenzied, then force them to charge into terrain, which will cause damage to the chariot. But they'd munch through EG in a heartbeat.
I personally like my eternal guard very much but everyone has hit it dead on. Chariots will eat them alive never played against a chariot heavy army but my dark elf chariots have munched through a unit of eternal guard before. You can move forests around them to influence movement and just otherwise try to get the charge. Eternal guard can handle a lot but 2D6+2 impact hits are a no no
Well some things that WILL let your EG stand up are:
If you have a highborn with the Rhymer's Harp. (5+ ward for unit)
If you have a noble/highborn with Amber's Pendant. (strike first even when charged.)
Also, as has been stated if you can frenzy them, you can place any unit to force them to charge into trees and smash!
If you want to deal with chaos chariots, dryads are your best best.
The T4 makes them harder to wound and the 5+ forest spirit save will let them take a charge, maybe.
The rhymers harp will help the EG survive a bit more but you unit is then around 300+ pts.
And just to clarify, the amber pendant makes opponents in base contact strike last, a very important distinction to allowing the weilder to strike first.
Well, not so much that can eternal guard can take a charge its more how many units in your army can take a charge from a chaos unit and survive. This happened to me the first game and i was destroyed.I got a rematch in throwing dryads, tree kin, eternal guard, and a treeman. That was a fun game for me:yes:
unless you are talking about the people who aren't in base contact with the weilder, then it goes initiative, charge, or what ever the situation is between them.
It is base contact with the character who has the pendant. That's why it is an important distinction.
I wouldn't use the eternal guard in a game under 2000 pts.
That being said, they are my favourite unit.
They definately need a highborn with Rhymer's Harp and Annoyance of Netlings (and a GW of course).
You also need a BSB for them, probably with the oaken armour.
They end up being a costly unit, but one that is very hard to deal with. Make sure they have a war banner too.
Luckily for you chariots are a very good match up for wood elves. Use your forests to get the charge with your other troops or bait them from the open.
