Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've never played a game of 40k before, my only experience is with WH Fantasy. Saying that, I think I've a reasonable idea of how to make a list, ie have stuff that can kill hordes, MEQ's and tanks. That's as far as my strategy goes. I don't know what to equip my exarcs with, suggestions welcome.
I like the fluff and need someone to Guide my War Walkers. I read a battle report with someone saying that he is worth the points so I though 'why not?'.
Is this reasonable? Again I like the models, and I'm a fan of snipers. They are good at killing heavy armour infantry, and for killing hordes I have some Warwalkers
2 Warwalkers. Both with two Scatter Lasers
Guided by Eldrad and used to shoot up light infantry.
Fire Prism. Spirit Stone, Holofield, Shuriken Cannon
I guess I'll need something to kill tanks, will this do the job?
5 Striking Scorpions. Exarch with ???
I predict that the enemy will advance quickly with my shooting with Pathfinders and Warwalkers. When the villians arrive I counter with these. Ok? As I mentioned earlier, I've no idea how to equip.
Now I was a little lost with what to add. I thought about another CC squad like Harlequins or Banshees, to support my Pathfinders. I like the models of these, and I don't really want to paint FireDragons, mainly because of the red/orange/yellow colour scheme the GW use, but then I can change that to something more to my taste.
Do I need something fast for this points value or will I be ok sitting back and shooting with lots of firepower? I do like Swooping Hawk models, yet every other comment on them is that they are too fragile.
Also, would I be able to compete with only one Warwalker or is two or more much better? I'd rather buy one for £15 and spend the other £15 on some different models to add some variety.

The Farseer is one of the few HQs in 40k that can be worth its points, but to make him so you need support squads with maximised firepower.
If you really wanna use Eldrad and make him worth his points, I would suggest taking 6 warwalkers split up in two squads. Either field both squads with scatterlaser or one with scatterlasers and one with EML.
This in itself won't make it quite worth it (but it's getting close, and it will be more cost efective than most HQ allready), but once the opponent move within reach of doom or mindwar it will be.
You may wanna lose atleast one of the pathfinder squads for another troop squad, and if you field the 3 EML warwalkers they can substitute the fireprism.
Fielding cc units normaly won't do the pathfinders much good, but warpspiders or shining spears may be able to pull it off, because they can be upgraded with withdraw (meaning, you'll allways be able too shoot even if the cc portion of your army is tying up the opponent).
Warpspiders and Spears are expensive, tho.
If you want variety and still field a cost effective army, you may wanna stay away from Eldrad in low point games.
You could field a normal farseer with guide for 75 pts with only one squad of 3 warwalkers with scatterlasers, and he would be worth his points unless the opponent manages to kill your walkers.
Yeah, Eldrad at 1000pts is a little iffy, while he will undoubtably have an effect on the battle i dont know if he justifies his cost.
As said, you really want to be maximising squad sizes if you start throwing guide and doom around so you get the most out of them, and as you've gone for a ranged theme more War Walkers, Dark Reapers, anti-tank wraithlord or another tank could be used to fill his shoes after a regular Farseer has stepped into them.
Also, and i don't know how well this opinion will go down here, but i don't like Exarchs. Unless their absolutely vital to your plan for the squad, ie infiltrating scorpions or tank hunting hawks etc i tend to skip them. Otherwise you can easily find yourself staring at a 1000-1500 point list and realising that by dropping the Exarchs and their fancy powers you could get another aspect squad, and frankly i'd rather have the squad. Since your Scorpions are only going to be sitting around in a counter attack role anyway you can drop the exarch, maybe buff their size a little and just have them ready to step out as the thin green line in case someones lining up a charge on your firebase, which of course is where the Wraithlord can chip in too if your using him.
Also i've not entirely convinced about Cannons on Fire Prisms, it means it's not entirely useless is it gets a weapon destroyed result but generally speaking unless your planning on getting up in your opponents face with it (In which case i prefer falcons with surprises in the back) your probably better using it's range to limit return fire.

Thanks for the ideas. I put Eldrad in because my army will be based on Ulthwe, with the DAs painted with bleached bone pads, black suits. Now you say he isn't worth the points, he's dropped in favour of a Farseer w/SS,Doom and Guide. I think I'll be up against Marine more often than not, therefore I've kept the 2x5 Pathfinders. Banshees, their colour fits in with the rest of my army, so I added them. Maybe with Doom and a Falcon they'll prove effective.
Farseer w/Spirit Stone, Doom, Guide
10 DA's including Exarch with Bladestorm
2 Warwalkers with 2xScatter Lasers
1 Falcon with Spirit Stone, Shuriken Cannon and Holofield
6 WarpSpider including Exarch with Death Spinner.
Is that better?
Still, if your goal is to kill marine infantry, you may wanna consider that dire avengers kill almost twice as many marines per point spent as pathfinders do. (EDIT: Once they are within range anyway)
Also, if your goal is mainly marines, you should be aware that two fireprisms together is maybe the most effective marine-infantry killer in the game.

The list looks good, although I'd say drop one warp spider for a howling banshee exarch /w executioner, it adds a lot of punch to the squad. Although since you're using doom you might want mirrorblades.
Also your avenger exarch needs a special weapon of some kind.
Will post more when I have more time.

If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
When you have a full squad of guided DA bladestorming a doomed marine squad you often find few left to fight. Even the oversized tincans, like terminaters fall before such an onslaught. For this a basic Farseer with spirit stones, runes of witnessing, doom and guide (and singing spear if armour is a certain) is perfect for this. I've found in the lower point army list, this can be a devistating combo, and with a squad of 6 to 8 pathfinders keeping infantry from making obvious moves into the open you should be set at anti-infantry. Unfortunatly, elder stumble against cocentrated fire power and knocking armour out of action. For this reason marines and chaos marine can be difficult to fight... That is a problem I myself am still working on as I am currently locked in a caimpagne against Imperial guard, Black Templar and the dreaded Chaos Marines. Though I cant tell you how fun it is to watch a chaos lord fall to one round of sniper shots.

I'm not entirely convinced by the idea of Bladestorm at all, it seems to be a purely mechanised or kamikazi power.
Either you don't expect much of the squad to survive your opponents turn or your jumping back in the transport so you can't fire next turn anyway, otherwise the volume of fire is greater if you fire again next turn, personally i'd drop him for more basic troops, same with the warp spider exarch.
It's pure tweaking now tho as thats a pretty solid anti-MEQ core...
If you only have the points for one or two maybe then yes, they can help make that little bit of difference by adding those extra hits, but by the time your hitting Exarch 3-5 in a larger force I'd definatly rather drop the lot for another squad, for me another 10 DA's on the battlefield trumps some fancy toys for some of my other squads.
WS and DA dual weapon types are some of the best bang for your points and would be the most likely candidates for upgrade.
