Let me start off by saying greetings to the forums. I just got started playing 40k over the summer and have jumped onto the tyranids as my first army. This was mostly due to a friend of mine giving me a large number of tyranid models that he had acquired but never painted. So after buying the codex, and a few other models, I was ready to start playing.
I was trying to go for a balanced list, that could handle most things, while at the same time, trying to have a mostly speedy army and those 2nd turn assaults.
HQ: Hive Tyrant (200pts)
-Wings, Toxin Sacs, Enhanced Senses, Flesh Hooks, Warp Field, 2 x Twin-linked Devourers
Broodlord (93 pts)
-Flesh Hooks, Toxin Sacs, Extended Carapace
Genestealers x 6 (126 pts)
-Extended Carapace, Flesh Hooks
Elites: Lictor x 2 (160 pts)
Fast Atttack: Ravenor x 2 (80 pts)
Ravenor x 2 (80 pts)
Troops: 16 Spinegaunts x 2 (160 pts)
16 Hormagaunts x 2 (320 pts)
Carnifex (148 pts)
-Enhanced Senses, Barbed Strangler, Venom Cannon
Zoanthrope x 2 (130 pts)
-Synapse, Warp Blast
Total points: 1497 pts

Personally i wouldnt waste the points upgrading the horma's there pretty much ezpenive spinegaunts that have a chance of kill something.
Dropping the upgrades gives you alot of space points to play around with :]
EDIT - ah nevermind there is a typo on how mant squads of them you took i was like how the hell are his hormas so expensive?
list looks nice
at 1500 points i would like to see another sniperfex but thats just me :]
let me know how it plays
Sorry about that, missed that. I fixed the error, as you caught, it's actually 2 squads of 16. Thanks.
My quick two cents on your list:
BL doesn't really need the Sacs, since he can rend normally.
I don't like Lictors that much, I would put in more raveners my self personally.
Spineguants are fine
Only upgrade I would give Hormies is AG I so that they hit before MEQs in CC.
Heavy Support is fine.
Thanks for the replies. I wouldn't mind another Spinerfex, but then I'd have to buy another fex, which will happen eventually. The lictors, so far for me, have been hit or miss. Sometimes they're amazing, sometimes they're barely noticable, so a few more ravenors might be beneficial.
I'd drop Warp Blast from your list, I use to use it till i heard that it usually doesn't do that much. I tryed a few games with out it and found that i didn't miss it.
I also prefer the strenght upgrade to my hormoguants instead of the Weapon skill, helps to wound tought opponets and makes them evil T 3 units too.
Also I'd drop the Brood lord unless your banking on infiltrating him as he's much too slow for me.
Other then that its seems like a solid list to me.
You probably dont need much more here. 8 Stealers may even be too many. I like 6, simply cos they form a nice circle which is easier to fit in, 7 or more requires a second ring.
Not bad, if you can get a 3rd one in it will give the opponent more worries than the lictors in all probablility but, try both, see how it plays for you.
Got to love Spines! I don't like Horma's but, if you want fast second round assault, it's the way to go for sure.
Nice list, should play quite well 8Y
Nothing to see here, please move along.
After reading responses, and playing a few games, I have updated the list.
I took out the upgrades on the hormagaunts, and the reinforced chitin on the fex. I also removed 2 stealers from the broodlord's retinue, which freed up enough points to add in 2 more ravenors.
I was having issues killing enough things. Sure I had the models to engage just about everything on the board, but basically the only things consistently killing anything were the tyrant and ravenors. The broodlord of course would tear things up, but only once he caught up to things. It turns out people tend to run away from broodlords.
I've stoped using my Brood lord for the same reason
If you are struggling to kill things it means you need more genestealers. I would drop the hormies and give the spine gaunts scuttlers. That frees up 270 points that you can use to get stealers. 2 squads of 8 only costs 256 (carapace is for suckers, but if you like it feel free to take it as you almost have the points already, just cut two(?) scuttling spinies.
The next change I would make is optional and really a preference change. You need to ask yourself what does more for you durring the game your 2 lictors, or your 4 raveners? Then if you said your raveners cut your lictors and add two more ravs and spend your 80 extra points on other things (maybe another zoan, possibly drop a zone and get a fex, maybe thin your stealers to 6 and get a third troop of them? Lots of options here...). I just think raveners do well to tie up what lictors can tie up at half the cost; Lictors are great, but they are overpriced, and not reliable.
