Welcome to Librarium Online!
Recently I purchased a box of gaunts, in order to start a second army and finally find someone to play with, but before that I'd like to experience the strategic gameplay of the tyranids. So, here is a small 1k point list which I composed mostly by taking what I thought looked cool.
2x 3 Warriors - Scything talons and Rending claws, Leaping, Extended Carapace
Synapse. They will be able to keep up with the hormagaunts and assault key infantry formations.
3x Warriors, Scything Talons, rending Claws, Leaping
My heavy hitting stuff. These guys will advance on the flanks, serving as either vehicle hunters or counter chargers.
3x 20 Spinegaunts
Meaty meatshield to overwhelm the enemy.
16 Hormagaunts - toxin sacs
Shock troops. They will either soak massive amount of firepower or get second turn charge. Either of those options are good in my book.
Also, the toxin sacs should help against marines/ rear armor of vehicles.
76 meatshield bodies
21 rending bugs
3 synapse squads
97 bodies total.
The tactic is the following - the hormagaunts form the spearhead, followed by the warriors, with lots of spinegaunts in between and on the flanks. The genestealers will advance on either one or both flanks. That way, my opponent will not be able to wipe out all my rending stuff before I charge him. The tons of gaunts should provide a huge distraction, mainly to armies like the Imperial guard and Tau.
I know that the lack of shootyness will be a very big problem, but I think that I can handle anything, besides mech Eldar(maybe mech tau too.)
Also, there are 28 points left. What should I use them for?
P.S. I thought about using tyrant and carnifexes, but they will lower my body count too much. I like lots of bodies.

If at all possible I would grab Extended Carapace for your warriors, they are not the most durable of things even with two wounds, and you do NOT want to run out of synapse.
If possible and to offset the lack of ranged stuff (especially for anti-tank) you might want to try and get a Zoanthrope with Synapse Creature and Warp Blast in there (it comes to 65pts I think). Or you could tool up one warrior brood for anti-light vehicle work (venom cannon and two twin linked-deathspitters). Hopefully there wont be much heavy heavy stuff in 1000 points.
That said, nice swarmyness.

The name refers to facial hair, not playing style.Originally Posted by A news vendor's stand, London, June 1940
With the carapace included the list is exactly 999 points. Cool
I agree with Beardy_Wierdy, but also you NEED more synaps. As is in 18 wounds your army is going to go out of your controll and run away. You already have more guants at 1k pts then i have at 2k pts. All the heavy weapons are going to have nothing better to shoot at then your warriors.
With that said, I'm a big fan of the bodies over bullets stratagy. I'd get more warriors and some raveners too for when you get a bigger force.
Army's used: Space Wolves, Tomb Kings, High Elves, Tyranids, Tau and Eldar.
