My friend and I just started fiddling with Necrons, and so far my only play has been 500 point battles with other friends getting into W40K. Before diving in and building a 1500 point army (my local gameshop runs 1750 tournaments), I wanted to throw up the idea I'm looking at for ths force.
Every unit can be teleported by the Monolith to get them out of close combat. After the mandatory lord and warriors, I added a full squad of Immortals to lay down oppressive fire on incoming CCers. The Destroyers (and two units of Destroyers in tournaments) use their mobility to put crowd controlling firepower on target, while the Heavy Destroyers deal with hard targets, specifically anything that can threaten the Monolith. After picking out all these units, I went back to the Necron Lord for wargear, and since he should have about 30 models around him, I felt the Resurrection Orb would be worth the points, and because he shouldn't need the mobility of the Destroyer Body, opted for a Phase Shifter and Warscythe, so that he can wade into combat with enemy independents/monsters that reach close combat.
I have no close combat troops, save the Necron Lord, but hopefully I can use the Monolith to pull engaged units out of the assault and get them shooting again.
Drop the heavy destroyers.... they look good on paper but really don't perform well especially in units of 3, and also the phase shifter and the warscythe on the lord keep the resurrection orb.
Then pick up more destroyers and split them into 2 units of 4.
Other than that you have made a pretty dang solid list.
Thanks for the feedback! I had 5th Edition in mind with the Heavy Destroyers, and that leaves 40 points, and I felt the Warscythe and Phase Shifter would give him a chance against things like Winged Hive Tyrants and the like.
But I can see the reasoning behind your suggested changes. I'll be paying close attention to how many times my Heavy Destroyers finish a job the Destroyers weren't up to, and how often the Necron Lord's wargear changes the tide of a battle.
If the Lord is just sitting around on foot, lose the Phaser and Scythe.
I agree with gauss about the HeavyDs for now, but come 5th ed you may want to be keeping 2 units of 1.
Dropping one HD, and the Lords gear, should be able to get you another Destroyer for 2 units of 3, and then get some scarabs in too. Possibly lose an Immortal or two and make the Scarab unit a bit bigger.
