So, I don't know if i've been playing against a really decent space marine army, but this list has seemed to work very well for me even though it fields the CC fex which most people seem to dislike. The fex has been the most effective unit in the army as it is almost guarenteed to land all of its hits which i seem to get a lot of when i charge.
Hive Tyrant -
2x squads of 8x gaunts -
2x Zoanthropes -
Tail Weapon (scythe)
The idea behind this army being to land as many hits as possible on the marines which have to fail their saves sometime. The gaunts are without number so that they can take fire for the fex when they outrun him at the start, then come back with the spinefists to harass his other squads. I have played with this army around five times against various marine lists from this one person, and i normally lose my gaunts twice (because they end up assaulting his marines) and nothing else dies. So did I just hit upon a killer list by luck or is this person just not using his marines to their full capabilities against my nids?
In a 500 point game it is incredibly difficult to kill monsterous creatures. You have a lot of durability for such a small game which is why you seem unstopable. Once he can add more heavy weapons he shouldn't have too much trouble with a similar style list. If he is going to beat you at the points stated he would have to just shoot your Zoans right away, and then kill the gaunts repeatedly while running away from the fex, which shouldn't be able to catch his marines until atleast turn 5, and if he is good turn 6 or not at all. Then he would beat you on vitory points. Unfortunately (for him) that isn't a fun style to play, so you probably don't have to worry about it.
In short, your list is pretty sick because of the point values. However, nothing in your list is nearly as efficent as it could (should) be, which is made up for by your two tough as nails (in 500pts) MCs. If you tried to play with the combat partol rules for list design you would end up with a much more evenly balanced game (because you only have one unit that is legit under those rules), which I think makes sense up to about 750 points, then you can really start to bring enough of a list to not automatically get swamped by monsterous creatures or tanks (which is what you are doing to him).

i think he was expecting more swarm so he was running mostly flamers and such, i believe he had a few plasmas with him, but he kept shooting at the gaunts with them. As far as the fex goes, yes i know it is a points magnet, but i figured that i could hide it behind terrain and such until i got in range for cc. When it did get in range it ramgaged through entire squads of his marines with termie armor. But with the deepstriking carnifex formation, i think the cc fex stands a chance now...... kinda. So i was really just trying to experiment with it.
