Welcome to Librarium Online!
Okay myself and a group of 3 of my friends have decided to do a tale of 4 gamers. We did a little twist and we drew armies out of a hat and lucky for me I drew Eldar
So anyway we didn't really do a budget because it is just for fun, but if I know my friends they will come up with some pretty beardy armies. Due to space(this is my 4th army) and just time I don't really feel like painting a whole bunch of models so I'm thinking possibly mech eldar, which really won't give me a ton of models to paint and well mech eldar are pretty rough. So anyway I haven't played eldar since 3rd and they have changed a bit so I seek your wisdom.
Please help me come up with a solid take all 1000pt mech eldar list. I will be keeping a log so it should be neat to track the progress and do the battle reports. Thank you everyone in advance! The little competition might be pushed to 1500 of all goes well, but for now I just know 1000 points is all we have planned.
The Hive Mind will consume all.
NOTE: This prob. should be moved to the armylist section
Anyways, you're looking for a decent Eldar force, but would prefer a low model count. Mech eldar have def. taken the nerf bat since 3rd, IMO, so I personally wouldn't recommend it. However, we can get you a fairly nice army going with a low model count fairly easily
Start with the HQ--you'll want a Farseer for sure. Spirit stones open up many new tactical possibilities, so I'd always recommend that as a must. Then you'll want 2-3 powers, my personal favorites are (in order) Doom, Fortune, and Mind War, but your preferences may vary. That alone will set you back 120-160 points.
Next we need two troop choices. Because of the change in 5th that only troop choices can hold objectives, I'd like to recommend taking 3 units. I'm a major fan of Rangers w/ the pathfinders upgrade, they can cause your opponent a serious amount of annoyance. They can also hold your back line
I highly suggest against taking jetbikes in a 1000 point list, they are very expensive for what they do--although it will help with the low model count they really will be just a point sink. Take a unit of 5 instead of the pathfinders if you'd rather have what basically amounts to a mobile objective capture unit that does very little damage.
For the 'bodies' part of your army, you will want two units of objective capturing footsloggers. AKA, Dire Avengers or Guardians, mix/match as you prefer. If you're planning on taking a Wraithlord as one of your heavy support choices, one guardian w/ warlock & one dire avenger squad is prob. best, otherwise I'd suggest two dire avenger squads. Either way, that should set you back ~120 points for the rangers or the jetbikes, and then a extra 300-350 for the other two squads.
At 1k points, don't take any fast attack--in 5th it's easily the weakest part of our entire army list, and you don't have the points to spare at that level.
Next, you have a major choice here... do you spend the remaining ~400 points on elites, heavy support, or a mix of both?
In heavy support at 1k points, I would only recommend taking Wraithlords or Falcons. Support weapons require a specific tactical use in mind to take them, Dark Reapers will rawk vs. MEQ armies but never make their points back vs. any other list, War walkers are too fragile (esp. with the new 5th squadron rules), and Fire Prisms really need two of them to be effective.
If you take a Wraithlord or two, you'll need to make sure you have at least two psychers in your army to avoid the wraithsight rule-- your farseer and a guardian/warlock squad is ideal. I'd take either a brightlance or scatter laser for your weapon--starcannons are too specialized/expensive, shuriken cannons lawl, and eldar missile launchers waste the high BS of the model. Wraithswords look bloody awesome and are useful if you plan on using this as your CC model.
If you take a falcon, the setup I'd reccomend is this: Scatterlaser, Holo-fields, Spirit Stones. It gives you a mobile vehice of destruction that is fairly difficult to kill, and has balanced weapons that make it a powerhouse for 175 points.
Elites. IMO, Fire Dragons won't be useful at 1k because you shouldn't be seeing a ton of armor, and wraithguard are bloody overpriced unless you take a unit of 10 as a tough-as-nails objective capturing unit. That's actually an option for a troop choice, however w/ that you'd only take two troop choices and the wraithguard/warlock alone will set you back a pretty 390+ points.
That leaves you with 3 options. Harlies are fun & deadly, as are howling banshees. You really need a transport for banshees to be effective, however, while you can get away with footslogging your harlies. Up to you. As for Scorpions, many people swear by them, and they are very nice, esp. in 5th with the improvements to infiltrate. It all comes down to personal preference in playstyle here.
Wow, that was a wall of text and 1/2. Anyways, hope that helps you get started, post back with ideas & lists of your own and all of us here will be happy to help
5th? Cool. WotLK? Also cool.
I indefinitely agree with Roulex.
Pathfinders are really annoying for the other team.
wraithlords are good for tankbusting. after the tanks are gone it is very hard to destroy a wraithlord.
maybe some shining spears to go up fast and assault the troops.
other than pathfinders dire avengers are good for troops.
Good Luck though!!!!
