Welcome to Librarium Online!
With the new edition, I've had to revise my speed freaks list. How's it look?
Warboss in mega armor, cybork, bosspole
4 Mega Nobz in trukk w/ram
12 Slugga boyz w/nob, powerklaw, bosspole, trukk w/ram
12 Slugga boyz w/nob, powerklaw, bosspole, trukk w/ram
12 Shoota boyz w/nob, powerklaw, bosspole, trukk w/ram
12 Shoota boyz w/nob, powerklaw, bosspole, trukk
13 Lootas
15 Stormboyz w/nob, powerklaw, bosspole
3 Killa Kans w/kmbs
I could also use rokkit buggies instead of killa kans or stormboyz, but I've found that the kustom mega blastas are invaluable when the opponent brings monstrous creatures and terminators, and the storm boyz help distract them long enough for my trukks to get into the battle. Any thoughts?
Not having any Killa Kans I can't really comment on them, though I don't tend to come up against a lot of 2+ saves and whenever I do, I simply rely on either the KMB's in my burna boyz or just do the usual thing of shoving a Nob with a PK up close and personal.
Let me know how the Meganobz do as I want to buy some soon but uncertain as to how many I should get assuming I include a warboss in armour too.
I'm not too keen on the lootas though. I know you love them to bits, but when you got a big mob of stormboyz, 3 kans and 5 trucks hurtling up the board, are you going to be able to draw effective LOS to much? Not to mention you'll be in close combat before too long. Not sure what I'd replace them with though, 2 deff dreads perhaps? Or maybe a 2nd HQ, with a fair few trucks and Kans a kustom force field Big Mek wouldn't go amiss.
Do shoota boyz do well in trucks? Never tried that before but its an intriguing idea.......
I like having the stormboyz in the army solely just to have more numbers. I know speed freaks don't usually play much into being horde but if you can achieve both then why not? If they were but 2-3 pts cheaper per model I'd probably run them in most, if not all, of my armies. Guess I can't really complain with the huge points slash in the new codex but still... It's fun to dream!
"Orks have to be followers of Nurgle! They're green, smell bad, and just want to spread the fun!"
Line of sight hasn't been a problem, especially not in 5th edition, where the rules are TRUE line of sight. That means if the model can see a target, they can shoot it, regardless if they're looking through a forest or over a trukk. Also, in 5th edition, they only need to be able to see a single member of the enemy unit in order to shoot them all.
Lootas are a must have in the list, simply because they fill so many roles. They're long range, anti-infantry, anti-monstrous creature (from massed high powered fire), and anti-armor (they wipe out anything besides armor 14). Honestly, I try to include lootas in any list of 1500 points or more. They're that good. The only drawbacks with them is you can't move them and you can't claim objectives with them, which keeps them out of 1000 point lists and lower.
Shoota boyz in trukks are very versatile, although I will admit they lack the punch of slugga boyz. I've found that only using slugga boyz in trukks tends to limit your options though. Shoota boyz in trukks are great mobile fire support, although they have to be out in the open to shoot, so it's best not to use them for shooting unless you're sure the target won't live. They aren't that much worse in close combat than a slugga either. It's only 11 less attacks, and against marines that's 5-6 less hits, 2-3 less wounds, and one less kill (maybe). The shoota boyz aren't about power, but versatility.
Meganobz work great, although they're more than a bit expensive in real $. If you're attaching a warboss with cybork and a bosspole (and you should), then the minimum number of meganobz work fine. 1-2 more doesn't hurt, but it might be overkill. Personally, I use 1 warboss + 4 meganobz. That's enough to do a lot of damage, survive well enough to hold objectives, but not be expensive enough to be prohibitive.
I just had a game today with this list and my side won...without much help from my Lootas. Sadly, for their number of shots fired, I couldn't seem to roll more than 1 most rounds (the most I rolled was 2, and only for a single round).
I was teamed up with a whole lot of Chaos, and the opponents were Space Marines, Imperial Guard and Tau.
The meganobz worked beautifully, although against a large number of shots (IG lasguns mostly) they will fail their rolls and die. It just takes a lot of shots. It's kind of sad seeing those juggernauts of destruction brought down by guns little better than modern starter pistols.
The storm boyz had a bit of bad luck. Ordnance destroys them as easily as it does normal boyz, so their cost was a little questionable. Still, they absorbed shots instead of the trukks, and that was most of the point.
The killa kans were the MVPs though. Their KMBs tore up the marines, and their power in the assault stunned my opponents. 3 attacks each, strength 10, ignores armor saves...granted, with WS 2, but you can't have everything. I used them to assault a group of assault marines and a chaplain. Not only did the killa kans win, but they went on to destroy a dreadnaught as well.
Well. Lootas are great units but I wouldn't say that they are godlike. They can't hurt av14, can't hurt av13 (unless they immobilize and blow off all of their weapons), 15 lootas shooting at armor 12 would score 1.6 penetrating hits and 1.6 glancing (not bad, but remember a 15 loota squad costs more than a land-raider and will high-tail it after a few casualties which isn't all that hard to do being t4 6+, even in cover.)
Against monstrous creatures, it's still not all that great unless you're talking about avatars or greater demons. Against wraithlords, or any tyranid monstrous creature, it's not gonna do much. Against a 3+ carnifex, 15 lootas would cause 2.2222 wounds against it, and against a 2+ carnifex it would cause 1.1111 wounds on average. Even against marines, a 15 loota squad should look to only kill 2.77 beakies a turn, which isn't anything to write home about.
Lootas are definitely amazing for their points against light vehicles (av10-11), and light infantry. Great units, but not uber units.
"...a swarm of mechanised locusts sweeping over the land, stripping it bare of resources, bringing death and destruction to anything that stands in its path. Emperor preserve us against the predations of these so-called Orkish cults of speed!" - Cardinal Nomura at the Conclave of Hessen
The new rules on cover saves hurts Lootas. Ok you can probably see every model, but that unit is probably in cover if the opponent isn't a fool, so you're getting past a random number of shots, then rolling on BS 2, then getting past 4+ cover saves. They aren't the gods that they used to be.
I can't afford to get Killa Kans........well technically I could get 3, but for the same money from my source I can get 2 deff dreads, and I'd rather have 2 of those than 3 Kans considering the points value and the fluffyness of them. Armour 11 is just that tiny bit scary against marines who like their heavy bolters and plasma guns!
Meganobz are definitlely on my list to get, 4 + 1 boss, although geting hold of Thraka painted already is not proving easy as I bet I couldnt paint him to save my life!
