Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm really new to the whole 40K thing here. My cousin's have gotten me into it and I've played 3 times now against one of their Necron Army. He likes to change things up a lot but really likes his Scarabs and Detroyers - LOTS!!! (he's done the fear aspect, and Monolith tactic...and I can't even remember what he did the first time - but uterly detroy me
I've come up with the following for survivability, tactical and monuervrability (where's the spell check?) concerns (came a little closer to an actual game with this one - 6 turns with end results being 600 to 300 at the end - for him):
13 Guardians - Starcannon
1 Warlock - Conceal
10 Dire Avengers w/ Exarch
- Power Weapon & Shimmershield
- Defend, Bladestorm
Dire Avengers moving with
- Singing Spear
- Spirit Stones, Doom & Fortune
- each with Brightlance & Starcannon (not twin-linked)
8 Stricking Scorpions w/ Exarch
- Shadowstrike, & Stalker
9 Fire Dragons w/ Exarch
Fire Dragons deployed with
- Shuriken Cannon, Starcannons
- Star Engines, & Spirit Stones
10 Warp Spiders w/ Exarch
- Spinneret, & Powerblades
Any advice or comments you could offer for me/
well first off, brightlances will be ineffective against Necrons. The AV adjustment doesn't work. I'd suggest fire prisms, as they can penetrate, and the blast will wreak havoc on warrior squads. Or try to melee with a wraithlord.
Fire dragons are a good choice they'll be able to punch down warriors well, also banshees' power weapons would be a better choice than scorpion's mass attacks. The real durability behind necrons is their double save, which banshees totally negate as do fire dragons.
I'm not sure about warpspiders. They're not very good at killing necrons but their withdraw ability is ANNOYING (Last I played against eldar using them)
Starcannons and reapers will be your friend. Also have some mass fire abilities (shuriken cannons/scatterlasers) to do away with scarabs before they can tie up your vital shooting squads. but mostly you wanna take away one or both of the necron's ability to make saves, really best done with low-ap since WBB can be preserved.
Yep. Banshees are definitely better, but be careful with close combat against necrons. If they survive the aussault the monolith can teleport them and give them a chance to come back. Your CC unit will then be sitting in the open, with the squad they just attacked ready to blast them apart. Banshees will destroy necrons, but be very careful about the positioning of the monolith and try to introduce a bigger threat than your close combat, so that the monolith will be occupied otherwise.
Warpsiders are not particularly useful against necrons unless you have a load of other s6 weaponry to back them up. Withdraw is okay against some armies, but necrons aren't that heavy on CC (usually), so it wouldn't be their best role. If you're worried about scarabs, try scatter lasers or shuriken cannons or fire prisms.
Speaking of which, take fire prisms, probably instead of your wraithlords. If you want to destroy a bunch of necrons, you can't do much better than two linked prisms firing a massive AP 3 blast. These are much more cost effective than star cannons, which, IMO, are sort of bad unless you're fighting a bunch of terminators. PLUS, you will actually be able to put a chink in a monolith's armor. That's a good thing.
Finally, fire dragons are overkill against necrons. If your opponent has a lord with a res orb, or a monolith, the double strength weapon won't negate wbb. Also, there are better options to take down a monolith than fire dragons. Finally the ap 2 is sort of wasted on necrons. Reapers can penetrate, and they'll put out as much fire for fewer points and longer range.
Invest 400 points and sadly alot of cash into 10 Wraithguard + Warlock with conceal.
Makes even the mighty Necros avoid them with vigor, and anything silly enough to get close enough to them will die horribly
I've been thinking of that 10 WaithGuard and Warlock idea ...the fact that they then become Troops almost seems to make it worth the cost.
FirePrisms sound really good too ...I'll have to give them a try ....way more travel
I've tried a few things that don't seem to be working ....maybe it's my strategy or deployment.
The 2 main problems I've been forced to try to over come is he's able to deploy his Destroyers and Scarabs last, as Fast Attacks (Jet Bike characteristics) and able to move and fire at the same time (Guass Cannons w/ 36"range, S6, AP4, Heavy3 - try surviving 24 shots with those plus a few from the Heavy Destroyers)....so not only can he set them up to target my biggest threat, but then he's also able to keep them far enough away behind cover (or other) until it's his turn. He uses his Scarabs to quickly get into close combat and tie up any ground assualt troops he can ....ARGGGG!!!
Banshees sound good, but I've never been able to get them into combat. As soon as he seen them, they're his first target and they've been as good as dead, that's why I used the Scorpions w/ Shadowstrike - they deploy after the Detroyers and can be in cover. The Warp Spiders are Fast Attack and can make big jumps.
I like the Dark Reapers but they have some major disadvantages against the Necron's too - they get deployed first as Heavy's and are unable to move and fire at the same time ....making it way too easy for the Necron's to either stay away from or deal with quick and easy....
So far, I've gotten some more good idea's.... and made me think of others. Thank you.
Anything more you could help me with would be greatly appreciated
