Couple ideas for a new Ork Army

Hello All, so I’m thinking about starting Orks (I have Black Reach) and have a couple ideas for armies, so here they are.

    Deff Eads
I would try to give these guys a German SS flavor with black uniforms, Ork Death’s Head symbol, Maybe try and convert Trukks to look like Half-Tracks (from German 1/35 Scale Models, decent idea?), and Deff Koptas to look like Stukas (probably too ambitious for me but I can dream).

    General List might be:

    Warboss
    2x12 Boyz in Trukks
    10 Nobz in Trukk
    20Shoota Boyz
    3 Nob Bikers
    6x Deff koptas
    Maybe Kommandos?

Pros: Easier to Paint, Cool conversion opportunity, competitive.
Cons: Trukks are expensive and ugly, I'm unsure about Mech Orks.

    Destruction Krew
Painted up wearing Blue Jeans and High-Vis vests (yellow) maybe green stuff helmets on everyone. Idea would be for a foot slogging mob, although people seem to think these are ineffective.

    Warboss
    2x20 Slugga Boyz
    20 Shootas
    10 Nobz
    3 Nob Bikers
    6 Deff Koptas
    Maybe Lootas?

    Pros:Footslogging Mob, Cheaper $ wise.
Cons: Lots of Boyz to paint, Painting Yellow, not as competitive.

    Wall-Axes Waaagh, the Hi-Landa's

Another foot slogging mob, with blue warpaint and tartan (maybe blue with yellow lines like Rugby Super 14 Highlanders)

This idea is less developed but probably similar list to the Destruction Krew.

I’ve found Space Marines to be sort of boring, So am looking for something funner to convert and play. I don’t have any experience converting but figure I have got to start somewhere. And if I botch it terribly it might just look more Orky. So I’m keen to hear people’s ideas on my ideas and how competitive the lists might be.

I like the first list best. But, I'd switch out some Koptas for more bikers, IMO.

Mech Orks are nasty. They can load up on speedy transports and heavy BWs with lots of lighter vehicles to support.

3 Nob Bikers on their own would be a waste of points. Go big with them (5+ and a Painboy) or don't bother.

The 1st list needs more vehicles. Battlewagons, Trukks, Buggies, and the like are very helpful here.

The 2nd list doesn't have enough bodies on the board for a footslogging horde.

SS Orks: I love it. Maybe call them the Skull Smashers? That way you can use the lightning bolts, and not have people get bent out of shape, because that's a potential downside to the army. But as long as you avoid the you know, Swastika (not spelled right, but you konw what I mean) you should be fine. Since a lot of ork equipment is based of german gear anyway (spiked halmets, stikk bombs) the theme fits pretty well. As long as your warboss doesn't have a moustache...

Ok Rabbit thanks. And thanks for the replies everyone else!

My only big concern with Mech Orks that I am really not a fan of the look of their vehicles, I guess the buggies are ok, but the Battle wagon just doesn't do it for me. I guess I could go with looted wagons but are they useful? How about Big Gunz a couple of 88's would be pretty sweet.

I'll stay away from any direct references to National Socialism. But I do like the similarity to German equipment.

Ok I'll bang out a couple lists and throw them up here

Hey sultansean, looking at your two list I like the Deff eads overall army composition the best, but the Destruction Crew have better individual unit compositions. I think this can be remedied! The first goal is to get the Def Eads down to 1500 points. Some people are picky about his, other casual players allow you to go 10% over or something like that; I don't understand this because you might as well call it a 1515 point army!

Second, I think that your attempting to fit to much into the Def eads which has lead to a thinning of individual units. For example, your commandos and Nob bikers are both far to small to be affective. Not that they serve the same purpose, but you should probably choose one of the two. Oh, oh, oh, pick the bikers! The Bikers!

Darn that math! I believe you cheated yourself 5 points on the Nobs in the trukk and you forgot 10 points for the Big shootas in the Shoota Boyz unit...better check my math

    So, how about this:

    Deff `eads

    HQ

    Warboss, PK, Cybork (95)

    ELITES

5 Nob Bikers, 2PKs, Painboy, Bosspole, Cybork, Waaagh Banner (350 )

    TROOPS

9 Nobz, Painboy, 2 PKs, Bosspole, Waaagh Banner, Cybork, Trukk (360 )

12 Slugga Boyz, Nob, PK, Bosspole, Trukk (147)

12 Slugga Boyz, Nob, PK, Bosspole, Trukk (147)

21 Shoota Boyz, 2 Big Shootas, Nob, PK, Bosspole (176)

    FAST ATTACK

5 Deffkoptas with TL rokkits (225)

    Army Total: 1500 points

The Warboss would kick it with the Nobz in the Trukk. How is that?

Thanks Russ that looks good. Is it good? I don't know.

Does the list suffer from the lack of a Battle Wagon, that deff rolla looks ridiculously good, although as said before I'm not a huge fan of the model? And in one of the Starting Orks thread it said mech lists need them.

And last question how would you go about dropping this list down to 1000 points something I will be able to reach sooner?

Tough one to cut back to 1000...

If you want to get a Battlewagon with deffrolla into the 1500 point list then I'd say drop one shoota Boy (because they'll ride in the BW) and trade out the 5 deffkoptas for a unit of 3 rokkit buggies. This will give you 126 points that can be spent on this:

Battlwagon, deffrolla, 2 Big Shoota, grot riggers (125)

The 2 Big Shootas and grot riggers will help it keep moving forward. I wouldn't say that your list is suffering from not having a BW or that you NEED to have a Battlewagon for a Mek army, but adding one does give your only footslogging unit a transport like every other green skin. Someone might have said that you need one because a) It fits the fluff and/or b) They are a great addition to any force.

Moving on to cutting the list down...

Ahoy, so you want to cut the list back to 1000points but you want the 1000point army to be the base for building this 1500point army? Hmmm, that's tough, because at 1000 points I'd do something a bit different then what you currently have. One of the main problems in how many Nobz you have. I probably wouldn't put Nobz in a 1000 point army, which means I wouldn't have a warboss either. BUT in the spirit of the challenge AND good Economics in these times...how about this:

    Da Mini Deff 'eads

    HQ

    Warboss, PK, Cybork (95)

    TROOPS

    7 Nobz, 2 PK, Pain Boy, Bosspole, Cybork, Trukk w/Ram (300 )

12 Slugga Boyz, Nob, PK, Bosspole, Trukk w/Ram (152)

12 Slugga Boyz, Nob, PK, Bosspole, Trukk (147)

20 Shoota Boyz, Nob, PK, Bosspole, 2 Big Shootas (170 )

    FAST ATTACK

    1 Deffkopta w/TL rokkits

    1 Deffkopta w/TL rokkits

    1 Deffkopta w/TL rokkits

    Army Total: 999 points

OR, if you decide to have the Battlewagon in your force as suggested above...

    Da Uder Mini Deff 'eads

    HQ

    Warboss, PK, Cybork (95)

    TROOPS

    6 Nobz, 1 PK, Pain Boy, Bosspole, Cybork, Trukk w/Ram (250 )

12 Slugga Boyz, Nob, PK, Bosspole, Trukk w/Ram (152)

12 Slugga Boyz, Nob, PK, Bosspole, Trukk (147)

20 Shoota Boyz, Nob, PK, Bosspole, 2 Big Shootas (170 )

    FAST ATTACK

    1 Buggie w/TL rokkits

    1 Buggie w/TL rokkits

    HEAVY SUPPORT

Battle Wagon, Deffrolla, 1 Big shoota (115)

    Army Total: 999 points

For the last list I traded the Deffkoptas for 2 rokkit buggies, and removed one Nob with a PK as a trade for the Battlewagon. As before, the Warboss kicks it with the Nobz in the Trukk. Both of these list should have everything that's in the 1500 point list, just scaled back to fit into 1000 points.

The ironic part about the 1000point lists is that it has almost the same number of models! Really the only thing your being saved on is a couple of fast attack models and the unit of Biker Nobz...dang those Biker Nobz are expensive!

    How about that?!
