Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi im not the first to get the idea im sure, but I was thinking of making an army list using an autarch with jum pack (giving 1+ to deepstrike), and three big units of spider (7-10) with surprise assault. The rest of the army would then be build around theese three deepstriking units.
Have any of you guys tried it or heard of someon doing it, and do you think it would work effectively?
Spiders are jump troops now, so they don't need to take Surprise Assault to deep strike, with the new 5th edition rules.
How many points is this? Spiders are very costly, but they are effective units. However, keep in mind that they're still Aspect Warriors, and therefore excel against their niche. They can do decently against light vehicles (even with the AP - nerf) and do very well against horde armies, but against MEQ and heavy tanks you'd have a bit of trouble. I'd say go with 2 squads of Spiders as opposed to a full 3.
I've been considering an idea like this as well. The issue is that three squads of spiders still needs support (just like any other Eldar unit).
I highly suggest running two Autarchs, packing Fusion Guns, Jump Generators (power weapons + mandiblasters are optional if you want to add an extra deterrent against assault). The reason why you'd run two Autarchs is so that nearly all of your forces come in at once, rather than piece meal. Fusion guns allow you to pop higher armor vehicles more reliably.
Warwalkers in your heavy support sounds like an interesting idea that would continue to get use out of Master Strategist. Outflanking with Scatter Lasers sounds like a good time to me.
Along the same train of thought, Striking scorpions can do the nearly same thing and provide you with an "oomph" assault unit.
Currently anything over 1500 pts I run two swuads of Warp Spiders. In most games they re the MVP. The number of shots you can lay down hurts any unit. Even terms.
Now I was thinking of running an Autarch but I thought his bonus only worked if he was on the tabe at the start of the turn when you roll for reserves?
Nope, as long as he is in your army and alive (whether he's held in reserve or not), master strategist applies. Two Autarchs nearly guarantees you getting your entire army in on turn two from reserves.
I'm not sure how well it'd work compared to other things, but it'd be fun. So I suggest doing it!
You'd have two primary problems.
2. Taking down vehicles.
The troops issue is that once you start adding in the spiders and the autarchs and some scorps and some warwalkers you start running a hair low on points for precious troops.
The vehicle thing is that it's so tempting to use scatter lasers. But scatter lasers don't kill land raiders (and against armor 12 it isn't pretty).
And you can't count on a fusion gun either. First you have to deep strike in the proper range, than you have to hit (fairly easy), then you have to penetrate (fairly easy but you'll still biff it sometimes), and even if you penetrate you still only have a 50/50 shot of killing something.
once you multiply all the odds out they aren't good.
Nevertheless I think it's doable. Try making a list.
If you really like shooting and scooting you could mix in some jetbikes.
dont forget to take the spinaret rifles for exarchs man. that way u got at least something that can kill in 1 shot and theres the SLIGHT chance u could pin with it to. you can also get powerblades if u feel u need something for cc.
