Considering 'Nids... GS heavy 1k list for review!

I love Genestealer fluff, and general killy-ness, so I'm looking at a good list based on a heavy load of Genestealers along with some light screening units, some shooty fexes for anti-armour and general support, and a nasty Broodlord for the HQ.

    Here's the list:

    HQ: Broodlord
    1 Broodlord
Feeder Tendrils; Rending Claws; Scything Talons; Synapse Creature
    6 Genestealers
Toxin Sacs +1 St; Rending Claws; Scything Talons

    Troops: Genestealers
    8 Genestealers
Feeder Tendrils; Rending Claws; Scything Talons

    Troops: Genestealers
    8 Genestealers
Feeder Tendrils; Rending Claws; Scything Talons

    Troops: Hormagaunts
    8 Hormagaunts
    Scything Talons

    Troops: Gaunt Brood
    10 Gaunt Brood
    Spinefists; Without Number

    Heavy Support: Carnifex
    1 Carnifex
Enhanced Senses +1 BS; Reinforced Chitin; Barbed Strangler; Venom Cannon

    Heavy Support: Carnifex
    1 Carnifex
Enhanced Senses +1 BS; Reinforced Chitin; Twin-linked Devourer (x2)

    Total Roster Cost: 998

Thoughts on this list? A bit swarmy with a hint of Nidzilla for laughs...

Here is the other option, dropping one 'fex for a pack of warriors to increase synapse...

    HQ: Broodlord
    1 Broodlord
Feeder Tendrils; Rending Claws; Scything Talons; Synapse Creature
    6 Genestealers
Toxin Sacs +1 St; Rending Claws; Scything Talons

    Troops: Genestealers
    8 Genestealers
Feeder Tendrils; Rending Claws; Scything Talons

    Troops: Genestealers
    8 Genestealers
Feeder Tendrils; Rending Claws; Scything Talons

    Troops: Hormagaunts
    8 Hormagaunts
    Scything Talons

    Troops: Gaunt Brood
    8 Gaunt Brood
    Spinefists; Without Number

    Elite: Warriors
    3 Warriors
Adrenal Glands +1 WS; Enhanced Senses +1 BS; Extended Carapace +1 Save; Toxin Sacs +1 St; Scything Talons (x1); Deathspitter; Synapse Creature

    Heavy Support: Carnifex
    1 Carnifex
Enhanced Senses +1 BS; Regenerate; Reinforced Chitin; Barbed Strangler; Venom Cannon

This also lets me make use of the warriors in the box set bringing down the initial cost a bit!

While I prefer the look of your original list, the added synapse in the second is definitely a welcome addition (that, and as you point out the cost).

I'm not a fan of hormies anymore. I'd drop them and replace them with more WoN spinegaunts.

I've considered that as well, but this is also based on the 1k-points-for-cheap style or army building

The Battleforce is such a great deal for the Nids, you get the equivalent of three full boxes of troops and basically get the Fex for free...

Is a Stealer heavy list at all competitive in 5th Ed? I haven't played them since 3rd, and back then I still used the Seeding Swarm rules which I'm trying to emulate somewhat here.

I'd say it's definitely competitive as long as you have the back up units (sounds a little cliche, I know). In my experience so far with 5th, and I admit I havent been playing much, my wins have come from cheap gaunts returning and holding back objectives while working as mobile cover. Heavies like 'Fexes and specialists like stealers are for wiping out enemy scoring units. But I don't think there's anything as good at destroying in CC as stealers, even with the downplay in Rending.

Yeah that was my thought too. Maybe I will drop the hormies and get two squads of Spinegaunts using WoN. They return on your table edge, so they can secure an abandoned objective easily enough.

Well, Bartertown has been very good to me this week, and very, very bad to my wallet.

My 1k list has grown substantially. Here is what I have coming:

48 Gaunts all to be made as spinegaunts
    6 Fexes
    2 HTs
    Broodlord
    9 Warriors
    24 Genestealers

So I guess I'm going Nidzilla
