Welcome to Librarium Online!
I started playing 40K a few months ago, and after realizing that I finally completed my Guard army this morning and feeling like I had too much time on my hands, I want to hop into my other 40K love, Tyranids. (growing up on Aliens and the Starship Troopers novel shows, doesn't it?) I've been looking around on the army lists here and through a copy of the Codex my friend loaned me, and frankly I'm just extremely confused, mostly due to the amount of upgrades available and my unfamiliarity with anything that doesn't fire flashlights and die from a stiff breeze. I've been reading through the Tactica and it's starting to make sense, but it's three years old so I figure that things that held true then do no longer.
Would the battleforce box be a good place to start? Looking at it, it looks like it'd give 600 points for $75 on eBay, give or take some upgrades. I really want only 750 or 1000 points at the moment, since I ship to Army basic next month and I want to be able to build and play them before that. I'm looking at playing a non-horde CC army, or essentially the polar opposite of my Guard. Any recommended beginner lists?

Well id recogmend buying the battleforce, then getting a second box of gaunts and either a broodlord or hive tyrant and that will set you up very well until you need to expand. Oh and the main lists for non horde, cc lists that work are nidzilla, genestealer swarm and warrior predominant lists. Just a couple of points to make here, synapse is your best friend, but isnt needed as much in nidzilla or stealer swarm lists. Just remember that any basic gaunt squads are almost helpless without it. Only other bit of advice i have is that upgrades work (as im sure youve realised by now) by upraging the potential of the whole squad. this means you can tailor your units to do specific tasks, but you sacrifice the ability to add special weapons to squads. Hope this helps
Yeah the Battleforce is really quite good for Nids if only for the Carnifex!
Seconding the Broodlord and retinue for a CC list.
