Ok so I recently started eldar and have come up with this list. These are all models i have at the moment but im willing to buy some new stuff to swap out.
wave serpent-TW bright lances, stones(farseer goes here)
3 jetbikes/1 with shurikan cannon
6 fire dragons
wave serpent-TW bright lances, stones
I think that is around 1000 points, I made this list from memory since I dont have my book at the moment. So any feed back would help. Thanks guys
nobody has anything to say about my list? So I take that as its pretty good or terrible. Anybody at all have any pointers for a beginner?
I'm only a beginner to Eldar myself, but here are my thoughts on the list.
The dooming/guiding farseer with the bladestorming avengers is great, but I would also give your farseer runes of witnessing because he's gonna be taking a lot of psychic tests with that stone.
You also have a lot of anti-tank for a 1k force, 2 twin Bright lances AND a squad of dragons...
I would probably switch the dragons for Banshees as you've not got anything else combatty, unless you face a real tread head most of the time.
I can't really comment on the pathfinders because I don't really use them.
I don't really like guide for DA's as usually you only stand to improve the to hit rolls by 4 or 5 at the most out of 32 shots on a bladestorm. Since they can only bladestorm AT MOST 4 times is a game, but realistically only once or twice that power only gets used once or twice per game, the rest of the time it sits out because of its limited range and the fact that the WS is TL already anyway guide won;t help there either. Guide works best with things with a lower BS like guardians or falcons or war walkers. If you pull guide and the spirit stones off of the farseer, that should almost be enough to scap the 3 man squad of jetbikes and get another 5 man path finder unit for a far more reliable troop choice.
The other thing i would think about is that particularly absent CC aspect in your list. Personally i like to have something that can counter an assault, even though you are very mobile. The TL bright lances are very overkill for AT since you are bringing the fire dragons and a fire prism anyway, both of which are probably better antitank in a 1000 point game anyway. Down grading those to Shuricannons will save points, and offer more antihorde which will help where this list is weak.
The PW/SS is not a good option for the WS DA's since they are MOST effective as a shooting unit and the WS lets them stay away from cc. On top of that you've bought the exarch bladestorm which again is a shooty trick not a CC trick, so if you do throw these guys into cc they don't stand a real good chance of toughing it out anyway without defend. If you want to make the DA's cc you gotta go PW/SS and defend, if you want to keep i'm shooty, which i would recommend, give him the twin shuricats, its cheaper anyway.
With the points saved from the WS downgrades and farseer downgrades you can get more bikes for the unit of three (which has a NASTY habit of 3d6'ing off the board on the first wound) scrap the bikes and get more pathfinders, an option, or get another fireprism, pick up a new unit like a wraithlord, a cc unit like a half strength shadow seer harlie unit or another doomseer. All of which would offer your list a great deal more killing/staying power than its current config.
A word about runes of whitnessing. While it truly sucks to have physchic tests fail, it is only a 1/12 chance of it happening, with a 1/18 chance of pulling perils on either side of that. If you throw runes of whitnessing it takes it to lesser chance of throwing a failed test to about a 1/18 (i think someone check my math here as i'm doing it in my head) but it raises chances of a peril throw to about a 1/12. So all you are really doing is making a perils check that much more likely. Runes of whitnessing seems like a great idea until it forces you to take perils of the warp because there were two ones out of 3 dice, even though you would have passed it with out runes.
On the other hand runes of warding is just about the very best peice of anti-phsych in the game.

Rune of Witnessing increase the odds of double 1, but drastically reduce the odds of double 6. Bear in mind that your farseer has a ghosthelm and an invulnerable save from his runic armour, and even with the increased odds he'll only statistically suffer one Perils over the course of the whole game, even if he uses two powers every turn, and even if he fails both his ghosthelm save and inv. save, its still only a single wound lost.
On the flip side you're decreasing the chance of a failed psychic test from 1/12 to 1/72, over the course of a game, testing twice every turn, thats pretty huge
For me the pros of the runes far outweigh the cons
Thanks for the replies guys they helped my out alot. I was just wondering what you guys think about EMLs on serpents, because I was thinking about modeling my serpents with them for when I got to 1500 pts later.
EML's are awesome, really effective if you give the serpent a Shuricannon upgrade because you can fire the cannon and the pinning AP4 plasma rounds whilst moving. Plus the option of a 48" TL high strength pot shot in a time of dire need is nice too.
Yeah at 1,000 point just give the seer doom and gang up on whatever unit you use it on. fire the bladestorm and pathfinders, it'll surely be killed, fleeing or pinned.
You do have a lot of anti tank as it is now, although the dragons are a great unit in a serpent. Personally I hate the 3 man bike no warlock unit. Only good for captuing objective if that. more pathfinders would provide more deaths to your enemy.
If I added 2 more jet bikes to the unit do you think that would be a good choice to make them more effective?
1. Drop everything from the Farseer except Doom, Doomseers rock!
2. DA exarch should have 2 shuricats, not PW/SS. They are shooters, keep them that way.
3. Drop the 3 man bike squad, will run away ALL the time.
4. Downgrade the TW Lances to Scatter Lasers or Shuricannons, BL are overkill in 1000 points, the FD and prism will kill enough vehicles.
With these changes in mind, grab a second pathfinder unit and get Holos for the prism, most people will disagree but they have saved my prism SO MANY TIMES its untrue, most VALUABLE thing in the codex IMO.
