My brother and I are going to be playing in our first tournament coming up. It is a 2v2
tournament with each person having 500 pts. I will be using Tau and he could use SM, CSM, or
even more Tau. I have a few questions and am looking for any pointers and suggestions.
What army should we use. If I used Tau would it be best for him to use an assault oriented army or for him to also go with a shooty army?
I figured if I go static shooty with Tau, then he could go assault oriented with Chaos and when the enemy charges up to go into close combat then the chaos can counter attack. It would be like having kroot but something that is decent at close combat.
Should I go mechanized, static or hybrid Tau?
Any pointers would be great. I am not looking for you guys to make an army list for me, just making sure I am headed in the right direction.
I would say a hybrid force for your Tau. Get some troops so you can get objectives and some crisis so you can hammer away at their force. You can't go wrong with a Devilfish either.
Either regular SM or CSM would work. My favorite is CSM Khorne Berzerkers in an Extra Armor Rhino. Get them in quick and let them decimate. Raptors are amazing as well. For SM, Assault Marines and Tactical Marines with Rhinos.
Those are my two cents.
go double tau. 1 of you could go completly static, with mass fire warriors and broadsides, while the other could go mobile with mass crisis suits and hammerheads. nothing should get through that much fire power. only trouble is you both need to work together providing fire support. the static element is to take out troops and armour where as the mobile element will concentrate on the elite aspect of your enemy. (apart from the hammerheads which just will pie plate at will) good luck! and remember those fire warriors need marker lights!
Remember star that they only have 500 points to play with, that is not really enough for "mass firewarriors and broadsides" Heck most people do not run a Hammer head at 500 points, unless its an ion head.

fair point actually, maybe tau and space marines, after all its better fluff wise than tau/space marines with chaos marines, any idea's on who your going up against?
Is that the rules listed in the white dwarf from a month or so ago? 500 pt each. 1 HQ 1 troop each then a fast attack, hvy support and elite between you? with the option of one more each once those have been filled?
I am not sure what the exact rules are. The guy at the store just told us that it was 500 pts each and that there will be certain restrictions. The store is going to post the rules later. Ill let you know what they are. It would make sense if it was the rules from the new white dwarf.
Definetely don't do double Tau. I would say go Tau + CSM because they have good CC troops. If he could fit a flying lash prince in, it'd be killer. I think plague marines might be too expensive for 500. Why am I talking about chaos, I should be talking about Tau! (violently slaps self across face; red handprint easily visible)
If I were you I'd just run one unit of fire warriors, and leave the objective grabbing duties for your brother. Chaos troop choices are far better than ours.

we did a similar one recently between 8 friends. My list consisted of
PR & ML
My partner was eldar and we decided to use his half of the force as the objective grabbers, although the gun drones did work out decent for contesting.
Im not suggesting you use the same force. This 500pt team up thing is good as it makes you really think about how your force can complement somebody elses and makes for good tactics sessions in the pub!
The one thing i did notice though was after 2 games so far my commander has racked up a large number of kills. That BS 5 and up to 4 high strength shots can be devastating at these low points. Whatever you decide rush, good luck with it and have fun!
I just wanted to confirm that the rules are what were explained above.
This is what I think I will use:
Fire Warriors x11- 125pts
Crisis Suit x1 - 47pts
Gun Drones x8 - 96pts
Ion Head x1 - 130pts
Thats what I am thinking about taking. I have never played 500pts so let me know. Its similar to Furstenburgs but with a couple changes. Do people run with any tanks in 500pts? Also my brother is working on his Chaos, should I post it here?
Thanks for the help
