I'm starting an escalation campaign with 4 of my buddies, to begin with we're going for 500pts. The other guys are using Grey Knights, SM, and 2 guard armies. I'm thinking about either pulling my old WH army in (which would save me having to spend any more money), or getting my Eldar organised (which would require a fair bit of investment).
My proposed 500pt Eldar list
Transport: Wave Serpent
Twin Linked Bright Lances, Spirit Stones
5 Guardian Jetbikes
Eldar Missile Launcher
I wouldn't normally go for a Bright lance on the ave serpent at this level but I'm suspecting at least one of the guard armies will be bringing a Leman Russ and I can't see anything else which could deal with it at this level.
Guardians are maybe not the best choice (avengers would probably be better), but I'm on a tight budget and I already have a squad of guardians with a scatter laser.
First off, good looking list!
Secondly, I am a IG player and really aren't fimaliar with Eldar, however I have much experience with fighting Space Marines and the number one question you have to ask yourself is, "How am I going to deal with a 3 up armor save. This really ends up being a big problem for small points battles (SM will go Infantry heavy) and it is really hard to get around it. Lasguns suck (no AP value) and usually mean I am forced to drop a battle cannon round on infantry unit instead of hitting higher prioity targets. If in an objective based fight, watch out for high armor saves and cover saves. Good luck in your league!
Are you taking the vyper because if falls within the scope of your tactics or because you had a few points left and didn't know what to take?
I can dig your TL BL on the serpeant. I do it.
I cringe when I see that you have guardian defenders in a WS. If you are running the league, see if anyone cares if your proxy them for DAs. They are such similer looking models.
The vyper was chosen for 3 reasons.
1. Versatility, it can zip around the flanks and use the str8 missile to hit the flanks/rear armour of vehicles or to launch its str 4 template version into troop formations
2. Theme, my army scheme is Saim-Hann, the Jet bike squad was also chosen over a small unit of rangers for this reason
3. I already have the model
You're right about the 3+ sv being a problem, but I just don't know what to do about it at this pts level, I don't have enough space for even a min sized banshee or reaper squad without compromising on everything else.
What about the following
Farseer w/ doom
Exarch w/ executioner
Wave Serpent w/ tw BL, SS
10 Guardians, scatter laser
3 Jet bikes, shuriken cannon
Total - 498
I'm concerned firstly because the bike squad is now too small, also without a transport or concealing warlock the guardian unit is extremely vulnerable.
Lets be realistic, first off, how often do you roll a 5+ save anyway, and secondly are the guardians really going to be moving to the enemy, or are they going to be sitting on the home objective shooting anything in their LoS?
You are right that squad is potentially small. And at this level it cant be used solely to contest objectives at the end of the game, since you will need to use them to full force.
Now with the banshees and doomseer, mirror swords are a better choice IMO. Its all about the amount of dice. you will potentially giving up 2 power weapon wounds per round of combat.
You could always use the serpeant as cover for the jetbikes and use them to soften up targets before banshees assault. I do acknowledge that moving them out from cover will leave them exposed to enemy fire that is not going to be in combat with the banshees next turn. But, in all honesty I cant see jetbikes not dying. But since in the new rules your own units do not block los for your units, you could shoot "through" your wave serpeant and your enemy could not.........
Just some food for thought, 500 pts is truley challenging for eldar...
