Welcome to Librarium Online!
Im a keen inquisition player, but always admired the variety of looks of the eldar army, so I thought that on the side (dont let the ordo hereticus find out) i can start painting a small eldar warhost.
since i doubt i will start playing eldar very soon I want to buy one squad of some sort to pait
the most common squads used that ive seen are banshees and dragons.
I was wondering if I buy banshee box + blister would it be enough for my future warhost?
Also about mirror blades (as far as i understand it is the most common upgrade) - how do you represent them because it looks to me there is no model already made for that.
or Fire Dragons, from the looks of it I will rarely need over 6 in any game.
So plese help me decide about my first eldar unit purchase =)
thanks in advance,
may the death you encounter from the glorious inquisition of out immortal emperror be swift and painless to you.
Absolutely no contest, get the Banshees. Banshees are not only the coolest looking model in the range, they are also one of the most effective at any army size. I have a unit in my army in everything from 500pts up to 2000 and beyond. Dragons are good, but they are very specialised anti-tank, and Eldar are never short of anti-tank. I'd take dragons occasionally in 1000pts games, but not routinely until 1500.
For most games a unit of 8-10 Banshees is good, in smaller games (below 1000 pts) 6 is alright. I would start by getting one box set and painting them up. The box comes with an option to give the exarch either mirror swords or executioner (see Codex p. 80 for a top view shot of the mirror sword exarch). In general mirror swords are better when your unit is small and you need to maximise attacks, while the str 5 is undeniably useful when the unit climbs to 8 models+.
The best way to buy Banshees I think is to get two boxed sets, you can make the exarchs up, one with MS and one with exec and you have enough Banshees to field up to a maximum size unit.
The other super-useful Aspect you might wish to consider is the Dire Avenger, they really are the most common aspect of all, and most lists have at least one unit, mainly because they are both awesome and a troop choice.

On the opposite end, I believe the opposite of Norman. I regularly use 10 to 16 Fire Dragons in my army. It may be unorthodox, but a single Dragon costs the same as a Banshee and Dragons are better at taking out vehicles. Surely you don't get as many attacks, but the versatility makes up for it. Pouring 10 meltagun shots into a squad of just about anything will destroy it with little chance of retaliation.
I actually advise against using Banshees because of their low strength and low save. I use Scorpions.
However, I do agree about the Dire Avengers. Every Eldar Army List pretty much has Avengers in it.
As for the mirrorswords, the Banshee box comes with two options for the exarch: the executioner and mirrorswords. So, yes, the box comes with Mirrorswords. The options that are missing are the Exarch with no special weapon and the Triskele.
Ultimately, if you're into it casually, the "good" models are pretty much Avengers, Dragons, Scorpions, and I guess Banshees as well.
im a new eldar player, i really enjoy dire avengers too. they are in my opinion the best "all around" unit in the eldar warhost, they work in every single list, from saim hann jetbike heavy list to a mech list to a foot slogger they just work well in everything. also might i mention that they get 2 attacks and they can capture objectives.
BUT if you want something with a little more MMMPHHH in your list i have to agree on fire dragons. and i dont find banshees efficient, i think itd be better to go with harlequins rather then banshees, but thats just my opinion, and most of it is from fighting eldar rather then playing them.
My Tomb Kings Project
I'm going to have to go against mr spiney here too, I think that fire dragons are pretty much a staple in 90% of the eldar armies i've seen, while banshees/scorpions/harlys all seem to be pretty fairly represented. If you're looking for something you'll pretty much guarenteed use, go for the dragons.
However, if you're looking for something awesome to paint, go for the banshees. And if you do i'd recommend giving the exarch the executioner. If you give the squad counter-attack then shes getting 3 st5 power weapon attacks on the first round of combat, which is pretty good IMO. Also then shes more useful against higher toughness opponents, while still being good against your standard MEQ.

The Tale of Two Gamers
Interesting, even a max size Fire dragon squad is statistically only going to kill 5 enemy models per turn of shooting (16 is an illegal unit size incidentally). I do love fire dragons, but their only real application is vehicle killing, and perhaps terminators too, for everything else we have a much better counter.
Eldar have a lot of alternative vehicle killing options too, fire prisms are a great option and a seer council is even more reliable at taking out vehicles than the dragons, esp if they are bike mounted. In generally find that unless you're playing against Imperial Guard there aren't enough tanks around to justify the cost of fire dragons (250 pts ish for 6 models + exarch and the inevitable wave serpent to get them around) in armies of lower than 1000pts
Banshees, on the other hand, are great against anything that walks and has an armour save.
In fact your question has only one answer. Eldar are specialized. Each Edlar unit has its niche in your list and needs to be there for balance. Fire Drasgons appear in almost every top tier list as they are our best vehicle killer in 5ed. You cannot rely on BLs to take down Land Raiders, Russes, and all sorts of other tanks consistently.
Banshees are wonderful against Meq lists but Scorpians are actually all round more durable and often are the choice for experienced players. Not that I'm knocking Banshees. If there are a lot of Meq players in your area then Banshees are the biz.
Dire Avengers are great troops but Strom Guardians and Defender Guardians can work just as well in a list designed to protect them (Wave serpents are your friend). I use WG as my troops.
Before starting out and painting up your troops design he type of list you wish to play with starting at 1000 points and going up to 1500 points. We would be able to advise you which aspect isd best suited to your list when we can see the whole of it planned.
This post is over a year old. He probably isn't wondering about this question anymore.
