Hey, I'm participating in a small tournament next weekend (6 players total). And I thought I'd just ask for tips about my planned army for this tournament.
Farseer with Doom and Mind War
4 groups of 10 Guardian defenders with Scatter Lasers
10 Harleys, Troupe Master (p. weapon), Shadowseer, 6x H. Kiss and 2 Fusion Pistols.
5 Banshees, Exarch with Executioner and Acrobatics.
4 Dark Reapers
Total points: 1001
I doubt anyone will mind that I'm one point over, but I'll check tomorrow with the guy arranging the tournament.
Things this army lacks, good tank hunting abilities and transports and tanks. I'm hoping that I won't face too many large creatures and/or tanks. I'm not sure what armies I'll be facing, I know theres one Tau and one player is still undecided about playing Eldar or SM.
With luck Mind War should be able to take out any scary Monstrous Creatures that show up and I think my scatter lasers should be able to take out any light vehicles. I also have my Harleys with fusion pistols for the random really big thing. I'm planning on taking the middle of the table with 2 groups of Guardians and my Farseer with the other 2 groups of Guardians on the sides with one elite group accompanying them. With Doom I hope that anything my Harleys or Banshees attack will die a most painful and humiliating death.
I don't have many units to exchange things with, I have a full group of Scorpions I could use, 2 more Reapers, a Falcon, a Warlock, 5 Wraithguards, 5 or 6 Warp Spiders with Exarch and Eldrad. Oh, and I have a Wave serpent still in the box as well. I also have some more harleys, basically another unit of them, but without H. Kisses.
Even a marine army will simply out-shoot you with having no chance of reaching them.
Your ranged firepower is not enough for your enemy to want to come to you, and you dont have enough speed to come to opponent.
I would suggest either increasing firepower, increasing survivability, or increasing speed.
I don't believe I will be facing any fast armies except Tau (The other Eldar player has no vehicles at all, but might have a few jetbikes). If they bring one of their big ass tanks I will be hard pressed to kill it, but then again one tank won't do that much damage to me anyway as it will most likely be geared towards taking out other heavy units.
My guess is that the people I will be facing will have between 20 and 30 units on the field. I'm hoping my scatters (16 str 6 shots per turn) will be enough to force them to come to me. And I'll probably be standing on the objectives so they will have little choice. Also my Reapers should be able to prevent them from becoming too comfortable on their edge.
Then again I could be wrong. =) But I don't feel that I have that many viable options. I could probably replace my Harleys with Scorpions and get a Wave Serpent or Falcon for the points difference. I'm also pondering maybe making 2 of my Guardian groups into one, losing one HWP but gaining some points for better HWP's, possibly bright lances. But that would make me vulnerable against infantry-heavy armies instead of armour heavy ones like now.
I would maybe suggest to either get tanks, wraithlords, or maybe in other scenario - wave serpents;
Since your army is stationary, how would farseer doom anything? I would maybe suggest fortune and guide, since it would help your backline. I would actually try and pick Eldrad since two fortunes on entrenched units would be much much better;
In a tournament setting 1 point over is usually not allowed, but your case may differ, who knows.
I don't mind Rhinos that much, it will just take their troops to me. But you are correct about LR or Monoliths, I guess I'm betting that they won't have any.
As mentioned earlier I don't own any Wraithlords, but they are in the pipe for future purchasing as well as a few other things. Tanks would be nice, specifically a Fire Prism, but again I don't own one, and I've fielded my falcon in just about every battle I've played and it always dies without ever hitting anything (BS3 is the suck).
I'm hoping to use my wave serpent as a tank hunter as well as a transport in the future when I have it assembled, but right now I'm trying to assemble 400 tiny plastic pieces into a group of Guardians and it's really sucking the joy out of assembling things.
I plan on advancing the the objectives that will most likely be between our deployment zones, the middle one will be held by my Farseer granting him the ability to Doom just about anything on my opponents half of the table. With fleet of foot it shouldn't take my more than two turns to get into position with him, and it will take at least that long before any assaults or major shooty-encounters take place if the enemy remains stationary. If they do move towards me they will be close enough to kill anyway.
I am tempted to pick Eldrad yes, but on the other hand I would be placing 21% of my total points in a single mini, and besides, what would he use fortune on? He still has the same limitations as the Farseer I picked, but without that many advantages. I do love Fortune however, especially on Scorpions. But maybe Guide would be a good choice if I pick Bright Lances as HWP's or perhaps a Falcon. But I don't expect my Falcon to live past turn 2..
This army is more than likely going to get blown off the table. If you were referring to if tau brings 1 heavy tank you should be okay. WRONG. His hammerhead will shoot the large blast template and annihilate an entire squad a turn. Also just his devil fish has a heavy 3 str5 ap 5 gun. Which translates to hitting on 4s (without upgrade to hit on 3s) and wound on 2s. no saves. Fire warriors = Guardians die by the hand fulls. Scatter lasers=he gets armour save against you.
Are you taking Holofields with your falcon? when I do it moseys on up the battlefield all day and takes hit after hit.
If i were you I would lower that number of harlequins, drop the fusion pistols.
Your banshees need that wave serpeant. or put the 5 b anshees in the falcon with the doomseer.
Do you not have any Dire Avengers?
This list is going to need alot of revamp unless your opponents do not have guns.
No I don't have any Dire Avengers, I haven't played since last edition when they just about as worthless as Guardians with their 12" range.
I don't see much of a point in having a Doomseer in a Falcon though, he can't use his psychic powers from in there to my knowledge and even if he could I'd still have to unload him and let everyone kill him before he gets to assault with the Banshees.
Yes, I fear the large template killy blast things, but then again they would have the same effect on Avengers or any other Aspect warriors as most large blasts will wound just about everything troopwise with 2+ and most likely negate armour saves, except perhaps 3+.
And Scatter Lasers are a better choice that Shuricannons in my opinion, at worst my opponent will have 4+ cover save and no matter what AP I have I will most likely at least face a 4+ save. I am tempted to bring Bright Lances, but that would lower my total amount of shots, then again I could probably use the extra anti-armour.
I've tried my Falcon with all upgrades and with none, and it always gets destroyed before my third turn. Although now it might survive a bit longer since immobilized shouldn't equal death for it.
About lowering the amount of points spent on my Harleys I'm inclined to agree with you, I was never comfortable with over a quarter of my total points in one unit. Maybe I should try the Falcon again and use it for my Banshees. Or perhaps I should suck it up and Assemble my Wave Serpent and give it TL Bright Lances.
What I really want is a nice Fire Prism to give my opponent some template love..
They have 18" range now.
Farseers can cast doom from inside the transport. Read the rules for 5th on disembarking.
DAs are much more useful in this edition, but generally need a waveserpeant.
Actually almost all models need a transport.
THe reason why your falcon dies is because he has no other targets to shoot at. I field tons of tanks, so the opponent doesnt know what to shoot at. I like fielding 2 prisms and 1 falcon. Also i field 2-3 wave serpeants. Its a hard choice, shoot at the fire prisms or the wave serpeants coming at you. I am not even sure what I would shoot at.
Also if you are playing games in 5th Edition, be sure to consider joining the LO 40K Campaign. Just by submitting any battles you would be helping out the Eldar Faction.
Yes I know they have an 18" range now, which actually makes them a viable option. But I don't own any and don't really plan on buying any in the near future.
I still don't believe he can cast Doom from the vehicle since no Eldar transports have Fire Points. The rulebook says that a fire point is used for the passengers to fire or use psychic powers. Disembarking has nothing to do with this, since disembarking would happen after the psychic powers are used, with the exception of Mind War as it is used instead of shooting. That's my interpretation of the rules, but I could be wrong, I've never even seen at as something disambiguous. Although reading through the powers they don't specify that a line of sight is needed, perhaps this is enough to use the powers?
Yes, I know Eldar need transports, it's painfully obvious with almost all units having and effective range of 12". Sadly I don't have that many yet. But If I do go with 3 tanks in 1000 points I won't have anything worth transporting in the serpents, all they can do is sit on objectives until the last round and then unload. I think Eldar really start to shine once the size of the armies pass 1500 points, but that could be just me and my love of Aspect Warriors talking.
More tanks/transports is in the pipe though, but I won't be buying much for quite a while now. Next on my list is probably a Fire Prism, a Wraithlord and possibly War Walkers. More Banshees and a small squad of Swooping Hawks is also something I would like.
But regarding my options for this coming weekend, what do you think? Try to squeese in my Falcon and Wave Serpent and drop the Harleys? People seem to dislike Harleys quite a lot here, but from what I've seen they tend to kill just about everything, and with the Shadowseer they are near immune to ranged attacks.
Well I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that since no line of sight is required, and a firing point used for line of sight. That you could use it. As for eldritch storm and mindwar, which are used instead of shooting, i am not sure.
I mentioned disembarking becuase you said ur farseer would die when he gets out. get into position. then disembark the next turn, move your banshees/doomseer, run them, then assault. Then if they dont kill everything in assault they cant be shot at it next turn, and if they do, try to consildate into cover or some type, if you cant do this, cross your fingers. You could always do a doom/fortune combo on your banshees.
I use 4 tanks at 1000 points. 2 bare prisms and 2 wave serpeants. I have 8 banshees with a doomseer in 1, and 10 DA in the other. Then i have a squad of rangers to infiltrate ont he objective.
I suggest a fire prism. and my next suggestion is another fire prism.
As for this weekend, I suggest using your wave serpeant. Putting whatever you want in it. I again, recommend banshees with a doomseer.
I suggest making the harly squad smaller and dropping the fusion pistols.
I might incorporate the falcon and warp spiders. Try to take out rear armour on tanks with the warp spiders. Give your falcon a EML , holofields, and spirit stones if its transporting something. Id give your serpeant bright lance and spirit stones. Good luck.
If its not too much trouble, you could report your battles for the LO campaign.
