we are starting a tournament at our local store soon. Im up against 2 tau armies and 1 heavy infantry based imperial guard army.
This is the list im using:
HQ: Lord (1#, 155 Pts)
Staff of Light; Phylactery; Resurrection Orb
Troops: Warriors (10#, 180 Pts)
Troops: Warriors (10#, 180 Pts)
Fast Attack: Scarab Swarms (3#, 36 Pts)
3 Scarab Swarms
Fast Attack: Scarab Swarms (4#, 48 Pts)
4 Scarab Swarms
Fast Attack: Destroyers (3#, 150 Pts)
3 Destroyers @
Total Roster Cost: 749 phase out 7
any thoughts on this list. I myself think its a nice allrounder list with some fast moving scarab swarms to kill or lock certain units in cc. keeping the rest close to each other to gain more from the orb, to get more wwb rolls against there heavy weapons.
the guard army is has a vendetta gunship and has like 8-9 missile laucher heavy teams.
the two tau player play alot with crisis battle suits and broadside battle suits
- I would forget about the Phylactery on the Lord. It doesn't make an immeasurable difference and at 750 points you need those 15 points to put toward something else.
- Scarabs are sacrificial and at 750 points no army can afford sacrificial units... especially Necrons.
- Losing the Phylactery and Scarabs gives you 100 points to work with and with those points I would bump the Destroyer squad to 5 strong.

I agree with everything said above, except maybe that scarabs are sacrificial, I've seen them hold their own really well, but if you do keep them, at least put em in one unit of 7, 2 small units just sucks for scarabs.
But I still recommend dropping them for points, like above.
EDIT: And even more reason not to take Scarabs, when you're against the IGs, they have enough templates in the missile teams to really tear them apart [/grumble about Vulnerable to Templates]
Anyways, I'm not actually sure how effective Vendetta Gunships are, but they look scary, so you might want to find a way to take them out, I'm thinking H.Destroyers, but someone with more experience should be able to tell you a better way to deal with them.
As an alternative to both H.Dests and 2 more Destroyers, You might want to consider a unit of flayed ones to infiltrate in behind them and take out the squishyies (Heavy weap teams, broadsides, ect.)

You're facing missile spam guard with a vendetta? wow that's a bad day...
Adalias, Vendettas are Valkries, but with three twin linked lascannons instead of multilasers and missile pods.
Saurfax, that is a very unfortunate game for you to be playing, 750 is just not good territory for Necrons, especially in the competitive field. As for dropping scarabs, against tau and infantry IG, they might actually be good, turbo boost them, keep them in cover for those nice saves. You can tie up their shooty units for a goodly while with that whilst your destroyers take down everything else.
Oh right, and keep the destroyers IN COVER. You can loose your whole squad to the vendetta in one turn.
Really I'd just drop the phylactery for more another scarab. Alternatively you could drop all the scarabs for some flayed ones, however I don't think they'd stretch as far or be as useful in this situation.
Heh, yeah I know a Vendetta is a Valkyrie variant, but I've yet to play against either, and don't know if they're actually effective and/or tough which was my point (might be able to ignore them/take them out easy ect).
Does all it take is one little glance (stun/shake/immob, ect) for them to crash into the ground and blow up?
After some more time (and coffee) thinking about it I've changed my mind, Scarabs will be a good choice against those 3 opponents. I still think they'll get shredded by the missile heavy IGs, but if you're careful you might make it work, and the ability to tie up the Tau Suits is great, so effective against 2/3s of the enemies is enough. But still make it one unit for survivability, and another from the Phylac like Alzer said.
Thnx for all the advice and tips. Problem I have atm is that we cant change our army lists anymore. What I will change is changing the 2 units into 1 big unit.
My idea is slowly advance my necron warriors and snipe they're heavy weapon teams with my destroyers. The scarabs will tie down other heavy weapon teams.
He doesnt have alot of blast weapons. he mainly uses plasma gun in every unit. I just need the first turn i think to kill at least one of his heavy weapon teams to advance asap towards him. Plus hoping for some good missions.
ill let you know the outcome of this tournament.
Cool, best of luck with the games. Personally I'd say not to split the scarab swarms, having two squads lets them be in two places at once, not one (and if you need more in one spot you can move them together).
oooooooooohhhh im so happy im not in your position, if you keep your destroyers safe from getting shot by multiple units you should be ok. (this is against IG)
all the advice above is solid, try to use it all. also id say to get your scarabs to hold up his missile launcher teams, if he has them all close together you can lock them all into cc and while thats happening you can work on the vendetta.
so yah, keep your WBB roles up and you should be either getting blown up or smashin and bashin.
My Tomb Kings Project
Tournament is over. I ended 2nd so im pretty pleased, should have been a 1ste place tho. The imperial player misused alot of rules.
a couple short battle reports:
1st necron vs tau
dawn of war setup with hold objectives. 5 turns played. killed his kroot unit in the first turn. then took 2 objectives with my warrriors. hold up his 2 units of battle suits with my scarab swarms for 2-3 turns before killing them.
2nd necron vs tau
pitched battle with hold and defend base. 3 turns played. in my 3 turns i killed 2 tau troop unit with my destroyers. he was really unlucky with the rolls. he didnt make his morale checks and ran of the table. my 1ste scarab swarm charged his sniper team ( killed it ) my 2nd scarab team believe it of not won in wounds from his hq plus 2 battle suits. he had to take a morale check and failed it lol. i actually rolled higher and killed his hq. he gave up with only 2 broadside suits left.
3rd necron vs imperial guard
spearhead and annihilation mission. this is the game where i think he cheated his way into winning. he decided which army to play against. i had no chance in this game. he blasted my destroyers after i killed 1 missile launcher team. after that my swarms had some bad luck in my assault phase. i hold up 2 imperial guard units for the reminder of the game. my lord killed of another unit but didnt roll high enough to make a sweeping advance. my wwb rolls where crap and i missed alot of saves.
in the end i killed 1 unit and he killed 2.
couple strange things that happened:
he turbo boosted his valkyre in a circle and ended where it was standing just to get a cover save. dont know if this is a legal move.
when you get a glancing hit with a ap1 weapon and you roll a 1 then it still counts as a result 2 on the vehicle dmg list right? if this is correct then he would have lost 1 battle against a tau player.
in the end we all had a good tournament.
