Welcome to Librarium Online!
Just a while ago I started eldar, and now I've made my first list. So, here it is:
-5 pathfinders 120pts
-5 pathfinders 120pts
-10 Dire Avengers 150pts
w/exarch, defend, power weapon+shimmershield
-8 Howling Banshees 155pts
w/exarch, acrobatics and mirrorswords
w/ Wave Serpent+twin-linked starcannons 125pts
All the help and comments really appreciated, but please explain yourself instead of just saying some changes, because I want to learn the why's too and not just create a powerfull list.
I already have the Farseer, 5 rangers and 9 Dire Avengers (I gave one to a friend... quiete stupid I see now) and tonight I'm going to buy a wave serpent.
I choose 2 units of pathfinders, because, first of all, I love the models xD and second, they're great! I'm thinking of putting both units on an objective and then see what happens lol. The banshees will go on the serpent and fly right into battle, then the serpent picks up the DA with Farseer and fly them into battle.
The idea was to expand this list with a Falcon so that I could get the banshees and DA directly where I want them. Furhter, I have no idea.
Most of my fights (I'm guessing 4/5) will be against my friend with is space marines...
Eldar are very strong in their speed, your list does not utilize this strength, you have lack of anti-tank. If you fix these issues i think you would do well against marines.
Thanks a lot, it was really usefull. I will rethink my list . The bad thing is that I don't have time tomorrow so it will be a little time before I can rewrite the list.
Also, could you mayeb explain why bladestorm is better then defend, because when I read both, it seems to me that defend is way better...
Anyway, I'll be back in 2 days with a new list, thank you for the reply, rep to you!
I'll do the explanation.
Many people use DA as follows:
pack 10, the exarch with dual cats and bladestorm, into a waveserpent. then boost the serpent up to the enemy location (within 18 inches of where they will be) unload, and desecrate them with a hail storm of shots. the next turn they board the vehicle (which should be right next to them) and then they sprint to the next location to do the same thing.
Many people try to keep their DA's out of mele but that's all of how you fit them out. They're very good and can be made like you have them as a defensive squad. But that's a lot to spend on a squad that will sit on your objective. They're much more shooty than assault, even with a power weapon.
Hey Asrai Archer-
Good stuff, but you always need at least one anti-tank weapon in a list, even at 750! I would strongly recommend removing 1 unit of pathfinders and buying a wave serpent with an anti-tank weapon (lance or eml) for your Dire Avengers, as well as giving them bladestorm instead of defend and a power weapon.
You shouldn't aim to get this squad into combat, you should aim to desecrate a squad with bladestorm in combination with doom. The reason bladestorm is so good is because you will dish out 35 shots in one turn from one squad. that is an unbelievable rate of fire, and it's important to link it with doom for maximum effectiveness.
You must have a transport for your avengers! if all else fails, you should give the banshees' transport to the avengers and then replace the banshees (a wraithlord perhaps? a prism?) the lord offers great toughness, resilience, cc ability and another good weapon with a good BS. The prism offers great anti-tank, great range and great killing abilities even with hordes.
Hope this helps! I would love to see something like this for you:
Farseer with doom
10 avengers with exarch, bladestorm, exarch dual catapult
waveserpent with ss and starcannon (or scatter laser)
wraithlord with brightlance and eml
With your initial list taken into account, i think something along these lines would be semi-effective and something you want to try out:
Farseer - 145 pts
Spirit Stones, Warding, Doom, Fortune;
Dire Avengers - 128 pts
10 men (exarch+);
double catapults, blade storm;
Rangers - 120 pts
5 men, pathfinders;
Howling Banshees - 118 pts
6 men (exarch+);
Wave Serpent - 145x2 = 290 pts
TL Bright Lance, Spirit Stones;
751 pts, you can toy around with this, but the list is quite competitive at the points provided i think. But I also would maybe try to squeese a fire prism in there somehow.
White russians list seems to be the way to go. Try out the pathfinders and if they don't get shot at, downgrade them to rangers and pick up those shuriken cannons on your serpents. Very often overlooked, but with one of those and a main weapon, your troop carrier has become nearly a heavy support option as well.
Oops upon re reading the list, I think you accidentally hit the wrong number when typing in the DA's cost white russian.
It's still the way to go but you'll have to fiddle around points because that squad of DA's will run you more than 128 points.. I think it's like 152, but I don't know off hand.
Thank you all a lot for your replies, it is all very usefull. I was wandering with an idea though, what do you guys think of a Falcon? Because when I take two banshees less I can take one. The thing that made me think about it is that they hadn't a serpent at the store so I took a Falcon (else I needed to ordor, but I couldn't wait xD). Also that pulse laser is great, with it's AP2 it will ignore the pantsersave of almost anything (Vanguard and terminators!) which is just wonderfull.
Also, I've reread the rule book almost and especially read the rules of stealth, scouts and infiltration. In these it says that I can infiltrate up to 12" out of sight, and 18" in sight. The scouts rule makes it possible to move them before the game starts, but to a max of 12" to the closest enemy (correct me if I'm wrong). So this would mean that I could place the second unit of pathfinders also on another objective in my half of the board. I know that my friend and I will probably play one objective in deployement zone and on in the mid-field. This would mean that I have quiete a big chance of getting the pathfinders (or rangers if I degrade) on the second objective too. That would mean that the second unit of pathfinders/rangers would still be very usefull. It's not that I don't want to take your advice, but I just want to make sure that I get these rules correct and as I really like the idea of snipers (I might become one in reallife!).
Anyway, I also like both lists you guys posted, so I think I'll be trying them out as soon as posiible. The great thing about being best friends is that you can be very easy about the correct models, so I know I could use the falcon also as the prism or serpent.
So what do you think, does the above change anything or do you still think I should use one of your lists?
The Falcon is a great tank =) . Having a pathfinder unit camp on an objective in the middle of the board on the first turn isn't a great idea! Have them camp on your own deeper in your deployment zone, but they'll be more useful firing on enemy units camping on that objective, hopefully pinning them even before they get there and what not.
