Hi all, long time reader...first time poster...
just kidding, i've been perusing the forums quite a bit the last week and haven't found -exactly- what i was looking for, although i did learn a lot from all of you!
Some friends recently roped me into playing 40K tabletop with them after being an avid fan of the video game series and a great deal of the literature from the Black Library...my favorite army...Tau.
so now that we have all (6 of us) chosen different armies entirely... I'm looking to start up my Tau army with a solid and versatile build with as low a workable investment as i can manage at this point.
So far i have the XV8 Commander, 12 Fire Warriors, 4 Shield Drones and the Box/Starter set (12 Kroot, 12 Fire Warriors, 1 Devilfish, 3 Stealthsuits, 4 Gun Drones, 1 Marker Drone)
And after all my reading i can't declare for sure that I have something i can field reasonably well without overspending my command squad (current build of 279 pts for the 2 XV8's & drones attached) or seeming to field too few FW's. and i don't have confidence enough fielding a Kroot squad in my point build as weak as they are to ranged.
(shield drone & gun drone)
Total 112 (shield drone & gun drone)
I also dished the points out for 2 Shield drones and 2 gun drones in this squad because i know how much attention they are going to get in this small an army...so my expensive killers just got tough but REALLY expensive and i wanted the extra wound allocations. I did go with the Shas'O over the Shas'el not just for the bonus to BS, but mostly for the extra wound as i will only have the 2 XV8's in the squad.
Grand Total for HQ = 279
X25 stealth suit
Drone Controller (1 each)
Hard-wired Target lock
I went with the drones attached to this unit b/c of the JSJing from behind my Devilfish i want them to possibly get off a Pinning and i want to make sure i can maximize my markerlights with them for the bonus BS, and i'm not too shy about having extra wounds in the squad and 3 twin linked shots /shrug.
Smart Missle Systemx2
I opted to go with the smart missile system and Flichette discharger because i'll be going against a lot of melee units and im hoping those points won't be wasted when close in and try for a Tank Shock or alternately stay in a good position and maximize its firepower.
This is as many Fire Warriors as i can field at my 750 point cap. (the EMP and Photon Grenades are just for being there that 1-million chance b/c i had 4 pts left after everything else was done.)
So far I'm fairly impressed with how this may work -on paper-, but i'm just as worried about having only one troop choice.
Optionally I'm debating replacing 1 of my shield drones from my command squad and putting a Marker light drone in there instead to maximize the effectiveness of my ranged firers; but then i'd have to shave some more points from somewhere else.
Grand Total for this army is 750!
Any opinions on maximizing fire power while keeping Mobility/Versatility?
(As a side note i need to decide what to bolster with first Broadside, Skyray or Hammerhead)

Here's what I would do:
-no shas'o, most importantly not this huge upgrades on him. Use a 97p shas'el fireknive with MP/PR/TA/HWMT. This is our most efficient HQ choice and it will perform great
-no bodyguards. At 750points you can play your crisis as lone choices, called Mon'at. This will improve the crisis since they will get a better possibility to get out of LoS and won't need to take moral tests.
-if you want to improve the wounds of your HQ then take the gun drones of your devilfish (ingame) and attach them to the commander. He will get 2 wounds more this way without any cost. But you won't need them if you play him properly. Just stay at 24" distance and hide him behind some scenery or attach him to your kroot (as long they do not have to fear a cc until next round)
-stealth suits are nice, but if you have the models, play more crisis instead. If you don't have the models then just play them at basic equip. no fusion, no drones, no other upgrades. Just take basic stealths and use them as anti-infantery killers
-do not play a warfish, it won't pay of. you can just fire one weapon at 6" - 12" with a multitracker. either your burstcanon or your sms will be useless. Only drones may attack additionally since they are allowed to attack every time at least one offensive weapon may shoot. But, do not give your fish a MT. Just play him plain, the only equipment should be a disruption pod. (the drones got other uses than githing with them)
-you need kroot! they are awesome. if you can get the models, get some hounds in addition. (you can buy chaos warhounds from warhammer fantasy and convert them as I did, since the original kroot hounds are really expensive models) kroot are really good blockers. place them around your precious models and if the enemy approaches he have to eat some kroot at first, and kroot are really good at cc, the hounds are even more awesome.
-more crisis, you cannot have enough, play fireknives or deathrains
i took some of your advice and played around with it a bit. i did upgrade my fish a bit and gave him the flichette discharger, disruption pod, and targeting array and it proved well worth it since most people i'm fighting throw a lot of melee units. (took out a slanesh demon prince with just the fish).
Kroot haven't done so well in my games so far, but mostly because i'm not fielding enough of them. (only 10)
2 groups of 8 fire warriors.
stealth suits i did put a fusion blaster on, and it has yet to prove worthwhile. better to keep them toe-ing the +18 inch line and moving up to fire and moving back to max the reduction of return fire. mostly turns them into a stealthing/mobile 9 man fire warrior team (9shots of 5-5 for 90 pts)
OK, so here's my 2 cents worth.
Firstly, as Orni said, at this points level you would be better off fielding your XV8 suits as separate units. As such I would suggest 2 Shas'el with plasma rifles, missile pods, targeting arrays and hard-wired multi-trackers. If you want more wounds then you can hard-wire a drone controller and add shield drones. If the unit numbers 3 or more then you should add a bonding knife as well.
The stealth team has far too many upgrades. Given their function and cost, if you want to add drones the cheapest way is to take a team leader with a hard-wired drone controller and 2 gun drones.
Fusion blasters are currently pointless on stealth teams, if you fire at tanks then your burst cannons are wasted, likewise if you target infantry.
Drop the smart missile system and target lock from your Devilfish. At minimum it only requires a disruption pod but you seem to run into assault heavy armies so the flechette dischargers can work.
You need at least 2 troops choices, the FOC enforces that. Given what you have said you own I would recommend 1 unit of Fire Warriors mounted in a Devilfish (1 choice) and 1 Kroot unit (1 choice). If you can get Kroot Hounds then I would highly recommend them.
Your Fire Warrior unit should be basically equipped, don't bother with grenades. The only upgrades worth considering, IMO, is a Shas'ui upgrade for a bonding knife.
For your next purchase I would suggest a Hammerhead. Equip it with a railgun and you have a durable, mobile anti-tank platform that can also put out anti-infantry fire thanks to the submunition round. This should also be equipped minimally (railgun, burst cannons, disruption pod, multi-tracker - 165pts).
Also you shouldn't post the points costs for each upgrade as I believe it is against forum rules. You can post the total for each unit, but not the cost for each upgrade.
aye thanks Swamp_slug, i did not know about the point thing. gonna edit that.
i have been debating heavily on what to purchase next. more xv8, broadside or hammerhead.
so far its leaning toward hammerhead...
infiltrate with stealth suits, it can prove handy if you have fist turn as you can take out an enemy vehicle then duck behind cover
a sniper drone team has worked well for me
