Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hello all, just looking for some friendly advice. I am new to table top gaming, and need help. I chose Eldar mainly because I think they look really cool, unfortunately picking models based on looks isn't very conducive to winning games, so try not to laugh too hard at my available roster.
2 squads of guardians
5 Striking Scorpions w/ exarch and scorp claw
4 Dark Reapers w/ exarch and tempest launcher
1 Maugan Ra
I have mainly been playing 750/1000 pts against my friend who plays Tau. In 4 games I have been unable to kill any of his battlesuits or commander Shaso, partly due to some really bad rolls. My question is what 1-2 units should be my priority to add to what I have in order to have a chance. I was thinking Dire Avengers, Wave Serpent, and Swooping Hawks would be next on my list, but any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
(apologies in advance for long reply. I enjoy talking about Eldar)
I'm quite new to WH40K and Eldar as well. From what I've learned, A Farseer is a HUGE help in most 1000pt and lower games. Mainly for his dice re-roll capabilities. Granted I've never gone against Tau, so I don't really know what to expect. But a Farseer in a Seer Council or with Dragons/Scorpions can be really helpful. Doom and Fortune are your friends. As cool as Maugan Ra is, I would play him or any Phoenix Lords for that matter when you are comfortable enough with the rules and basics in a typical match.
I'd say use 5 Scorps with exarch and the claw or 6 Dragons without an exarch. Dragons are useful on taking out pesky multi-wound, high Toughness, vehicles, and low armor save enemies. I used to choose the Banshees over the Scorpions, but S3 power weapons and 4+ saves doesn't work out for me. Recently noticed the 3+ saves for the Scorpions. I'm all about survivability. Especially when working with an army with a Toughness of 3.
One Wave Serpent is definitely helpful to get your guys to the fight quicker. Plus as long as you move 6" to 12" a turn, the enemy will need a 6+ to hit in Assault and you'll be able to fire your main weapon and the catapults. I prefer Shuriken Cannons over Scatter Lasers for cost efficiency. One less shot and 1 Ap less for much cheaper. All shots over 8 count as 8 and +1 for Armor Pen. for meltas and such is negated. Could even flatout and get a nifty 4+ cover save in trade for not being able to fire. I'd put vectored enegines on it though if you have extra points lying around if that's the plan.
To save on points for your Troops, I'd go with two basic 5 man Avenger squads. Their 18" range is nice. Can make enemies come to you while picking them off with other units. If you're playing on a map with buildings or sufficient amount of cover then a 5+ man squad of Rangers/Pathfinders...granted the enemy doesn't have any flamers with jetpacks or wings....those ignore cover saves and will hit you on the top floor from the bottom with ease. Ugh. Learned that in my last match against Chaos Daemons. Infiltrate the Pathfindes in a building to have them in cover and shooting at the start of the game. AP1 on a 5 or 6 for hits and a 6 on wounds for rending. Sweet.
I have yet to use a Wraithlord, but having a psyker like a Farseer or a Guardian squad with a Warlock to babysit him seems like a good idea. I'd go with a 10+ man squad with a Warlock with Enhance for +1 WS and +1 Initiative by him.
The Reapers without the exarch would be a better use of points in my opinion. The Reapers hitting from afar against a Doomed squad is mighty satisfying.
Jump infantry is useful when you are trying to close in on a unit that sits back like your Reapers. Hawks are nice for their grenade drop and tankbusting capability. Spiders are nice for their assault 3 (I believe) S6 weapons. All about preference here.
Here's a quick list. Forgive me for any inaccurate information. I don't have my codex with me.
Farseer with Doom, Fortune, and Spirit Stones 130pts
5 Pathfinders 120pts
5 Dark Reapers 175pts
6 Striking Scorpions with Exarch and Scorpion Claw 123pts
Wraithlord with Shuriken Cannon and Scatter Laser 125pts
10 Guardians with Warlock with Enhance and Spear 123
5-10 Dire Avengers 60pts-120pts
Wave Serpent with Shuriken Cannon 100pts
840pts to 901pts depending on Troops really. Could put a squad of Jump infantry, or maybe another Wave Serpent with a 10 man squad of Avenegers. Or be bllsy and go with the Avatar as well.
Hope this helps.
Very helpful, thanks Troll. I agree about Maugan Ra, when I put him in with the whole squad of Reapers, the cost just seems way too high. I will definitely be getting a farseer. I appreciate that you didn't just tell me to get Dire Avengers and Wave Serpents. Although I'm sure this a useful way to go, I really want to play with the diversity of the Eldar, that just seems way too vanilla. But then again I really have no idea what I'm doing. Thanks again for the advice.
