On saturday i have my first game (with the new 'dex) against a friends' orkz. Played him 5-6 times with the old 'dex.
Back then i fielded 2 tyrants (1 with wings), 1 elite-devilfex, 2 almost-godfexes, 2 zoas, some genestealers, and filled the rest with termas and some hormas. He wiped the floor with my MCs every time, maybe because i wasn't as experienced as i am right now, but every power claw meant imminent danger.
His army didn't change much since HIS new codex. 4-6 boys in trucks with a power-claw-nob, meganobz in a truck with dok grotsnik attached, a battlewagon with kill kannon, 5 kommandos + boss snikrot, 2 deffkoptaz, and sometimes 5-6 nobbikers. He plays pretty straight foward, trying to get into cc as fast as possible.
As i can't take any transports to shield my bugs and he doesn't have that much shooting power, i wanted to try a variation of the IG-blob, i call it the Bug-Blob-of-Death. I know it's not the most competitive list, but i wanted to give my idea a try.
Swarmlord - 280
2x Tyrant Guards with Bonewords
Hive Tyrant with HVC, Old Adversary, Armored Shell, Brainleech Worms
Nemesis + Spore
20 Termas with spinefists
20 Termas with spinefists
Tervigon with Catalyst, Adrenalin Glands and Toxin
30 Gargoyles in 1-3 broods
For my plan to work i don't need any heavy support. In the middle i put all the "big" guys (tyrants, tervigon, venomthrope, etc) and shield them all with 100 gaunts. I keep it pretty crowded, so i have to take care of his battlewagon (and deffkoptaz) with my hiveguards and my hvc-tyrant (stunning it is all i need). Why i keep everything close together is simple, all gaunts try to get as many effects as possible. Cover + defensive grenades + a dangerous-terrain-test for everyone assaulting(venomthropes), toxin + adrenalin + counter-attack (tervigon), preferred enemy (hvc-tyrant) and if i have to the swarmlord can help out with an usr.
The nemesis is there just for fun, maybe i won't even deepstrke it and the gargoyle are nice for supporting/counter-attack.
If he brings Nob-Bikers, the Sawrmlord and his retinue should be more than capable to kill them (or should i try to get them with my Hiveguards?).
really? no one?
This is very similar to the list I'd like to run, and it should work great against Orks. However, I would lose some of the Gargoyles for Devourers instead of Spinefists on those Gaunts. You also need to figure out your Synapse situation for the Gargoyles, as they'll be Lurking if you let them get too far from the blob, where they would be most useful. A very minimal brood of Shrikes might work, but you may have to drop so many Gargoyles to get them that it would prove pointless.
I'm not sure what the Nemesis is - perhaps it has a different name in my language. Perhaps you mean the Doom of Malan'tai? If so, that's your solution to Boyz right there. Also, if your opponent is anything like the Ork players I encounter, he'll be using his Nobz as a spearhead. Be sure to put on your best worried face when they go for the Swarmlord!
if I were you I'd swap the gargoyles for a brood of 3 biovores. They always make up for their points with ease against orks. I'm also still not convinced about the swarmlord, I'd use a normal hive instead and give him some upgrades and 2 pairs of devourers for the points
so... yesterday was game night. i made some last-minute changes to this list (dropping the doom+spore, brainleech worms on the hive tyrant and one venomthrope for 4 shrikes with boneswords and toxin). he didn't want to know anything about my special rules, "surprise me" he said.
he had a lonely warboss on a bike, grotsnik with 4 megabosses in a battlewagon, 5 trukks filled with boys, 15 stormboys, 5 kommandoz + snikrot, 3 killakoptaz and a buggy (with this heavy flamer thingy).
he went straight for the kill and i barely moved first turn (just enought for my hive guards to be able to target the battlewagons side armour and wreck it).
to keep it short: at the beginning of turn four, he had 4 trucks left and the warboss locked in combat with my 2 hive guards (he managed to cause 1 wound in 2 rounds of cc^^) and i lost about 60 gaunts and a tyrant guard.
the shrikes were brutal, slicing through boyz and nobz alike. something else amazing were the 2 tyrants in the second row, just behind 40 gaunts that got attacked by 30 boys and the meganobz. after this first round of close combat, which was a draw, they both used mental scream (hope i translated it right) and finished the remaining boyz off, leaving only the meganobz (to be killed by the swarmlord and the shrikes).
one group of gargoyles didn't do anything, so next time i would swap them for 2 biovores, but the other managed to get 14 wounds on the outflanking killakoptaz (shooting+cc)
that aside, i am really happy how my units worked together and that he didn't bring any pieplates to the table.
thanks for the advice with the shrikes, otherwise i would have had a hard time getting rid of those meganobz
