Welcome to Librarium Online!
So, come Monday I'm going to play my first game ever with my Tyranids.
My opponent will also be playing his first game with the new Space Wolves codex, so I'm hoping his lack of experience cancels out mine somewhat. All I know about him is that he dislikes mech, and likes assault cannons. I'm also expecting him to use a similar list as the last one I saw him use (see below).
His last list at 1500 points contained 2 full tactical squads (power fists), 1 full squad of Blood Claws, 2 land speeders with assault cannons, 1 dreadnought with ccw and assault cannon, predator with TL lascannons, 5 assault terminators with some form of HQ unit mixed in, and one solo HQ wolf lord.
I'm planning on a list similar to the following (don't have the exact points cost calculated atm as this is just a rough first draft). I think I have about 150 points left over, and have no idea what to use them on, I'm thinking maybe some Gargoyles or more Genestealers. Theres also the possibility to use my Hive Tyrant as the Swarmlord instead, I doubt he would object as it's a friendly game.
Hive Tyrant + Old Adversary + Dessicator Larvae
15 Hormagaunts + Toxin sacs+ Adrenal glands
15 Hormagaunts + Toxin sacs+ Adrenal glands
10 Ripper Swarms
3 Warriors + R. Claws & S. Talons
3 Warriors + 1 Venom Cannon
10 Genestealers + Broodlord + Adrenal glands + Toxin sacs
My plan is to just rush in and hope for the best, using my swarms as mobile cover and to prevent him from assaulting the rest of my units. If we are playing for objectives I'll most likely leave my shooty warriors and one unit of Gaunts to guard it, the rest will move forward in one large group.
So, any suggestions or ideas? The thing I'm most afraid of is one of those cheating psykers that removes all models under a line, my Carnifex is a goner if he uses that. Also, most likely he'll have psychic hoods, and I hate those things.
The units I have at my disposal are:
(If nothing else is specified they have the basic wargear the different units begin with.)
3 Warriors w/ R. Claws & S. Talons
2 Warriros w/ Venom Cannon
2 Warriros w/ Deathspitter
1 Broodlord w/ S. Talons
8 Genestealers w/ S. Talons
12 Termagaunts w/ Spinefists
12 Ripper Swarms
1 Spore Mine
Hi, I just took a part in a tournament and I fought Space Wolves for the first time as well, against a pretty decent player. I won the game against Space Wolves (I must admit that it was mainly thanks to lots of luck with the Doom Of Malantai and as a tip I'd tell you that you absolutely MUST use the Doom. If used well and with some luck it could take on most of your opponent's army on its own) and I came second overall in the tournament (won all of my games except for a game against Black Templars in the final) The list that I used (1500 points) was something along the lines of:
Doom of Malantai
3x Tyranid Warriors
The plan in this list is to use deep striking effectively and deep strike the doom on the middle of your opponent's forces and make him take leadership on 3D6 and causing lots of wounds ( in my game the doom did wonders against orks using that). Get rid of some transports by deep striking zoanthropes and gaunts with fleshborers facing their rear armour and once you dealt with them target heavy armour
and any troops with the rest.
Hope that helps a bit

Interesting list, sadly it's a bit out of my reach model-wise. I could use one of my Zoantropes as the Doom, but since he will have to... err... tailslog(?) across the field I doubt he will live very long. I dont' have anything even resembling mycetic spores and I'm wholeheartedly against using something like coke-cans to proxy them, but the odd wargear or IC being proxied by a regular model of the same type is a bit easier for me to motivate.
I also prefer the winged tyrant though, but since I feel I lack Synapse Creatures I'll probably need to keep him back with the rest of my army anyway. I am however thinking of giving him a Stranglehorn Cannon, so he can do something while walking up to the enemy. My plan is to basically swamp him in CC, and I'm relying heavily on him not using transports so that I can catch him. It may be a big gamble for most people to do this, but where I live mech hasn't really hit home and most people still footslog, and I use that to my advantage as much as possible. I do however dread him taking a Land Raider, as I know he has one and talked about it with tender food-monkey love, and the only thing I have that can hurt it is my Zoans that will probably die very fast, although I'm actually mostly using them to soak up shots to the bulk of my models will get to CC.
I would not push my luck with your opponent not taking any trasports. If he's a player that has played at least a couple of games I can pretty much tell that he'll have some sort of vehicles (during my match the space wolf player had a land raider and a predator and it seemed to work well together). Also, try asking your opponent if he'll let you use the trygon base as a spore keeping in mind that it is a monstreous creature (the spore), even if he says you can't do that, after deep striking just remove the spore as your opponent should be fine with you doing that (unless you play in a tourny or your opponent is uber fussy).
I don't own any Trygon bases, nor do I own any Trygons. I've decided on taking the Swarmlord and Doom of Melan'tai instead of my normal tyrant and the 2 Zoans, because I just noticed one of my Zoans wasn't assembled yet and the outflank bonus on the Swarmlord will go well with my Genestealers.
As previously stated, he should have transports, like most of my opponents, but no one ever uses them except me. He might bring the Raider, but I'm not too scared of that, just less points of things shooting at me, the same goes for the Predator if he brings that. I'm semi-worried about his land speeders, and anything in the form of artillery that can blast my Warriors, but again I don't expect to face that. If I'm lucky he thinks I'm bringing my Eldar to the table, and has tailored his list towards that. Won't he be sorry when I start eating his face... *evil grin*
Anyway, thanks for the input, I've packed my army into the box and am heading to bed, so no time for final adjustments any more. I'll let you know how the game turns out.
Damn, the game got canceled due to family issues just as it was beginning. He had pretty much the list I expected, 2 tacticals, 1 blood claw, 5 termis, 2 land speeders, 2 predators and a dred with a lone wolf and rune priest thrown in. I'm guessing for our rematch I'll be facing a lot more flamers and other nasty anti-nid things. But the good news is that I have more time to form my own list, so forth with the suggestions!
Played him today, we both used the same lists as last time, since we never got to finish that game. I ended up winning, holding three objectives to his zero.
I lost the Swarmlord to mass heavy bolter/autocannon/assault cannon fire on turn three, before he did anything, which had me bummed big time. But the Doom managed to kill the five terminators, the rune priest and the lone wolf, I doubt he'll live long enough the next time I use him though. My Genestealers outflanked nicely in behind his lines and ate up a grey hunter squad, a predator and immobilised his dread but lost most of their numbers to the heavy flamer of the dread. I learned that they are pretty mean even without their upgrades, and will most likely not give them any the next time I use them. My swarms did their part, soaking up fire and slowing down his blood claws. My gaunts didn't really make it into combat, one of them knocked out a land speeder though, losing a lot of their numbers to cowardly speeder fire. My Warriors also didn't do much except for the one with the Venom Cannon which managed to kill a handfull of grey hunters, thinning the herd somewhat. My Carnifex tore through the Blood Claws and a squad of Grey Hunters like a hot knife through butter, I was very pleased with his performance even though he just had the basic loadout.
In my next game I will most likely take a basic Hive Tyrant instead of the Swarmlord to save points, maybe with a few cheap upgrades, but probably not. I will also remove the upgrades on my Genestealers, possibly leaving the Broodlord, but other than that they are good enough as they are. I'll use the points to beef up my gaunt brood (proxying hormagaunts with my termagaunts), and also my Warrior broods if people don't mind me proxying their weapons a bit. Depending on the points left over I might take a Gargoyle brood, or just add a few more genestealers do they are less sensitive to casualties.
My list will probably suffer a lot more against more mechanized foes, but I'm lucky in living somewhere where mech hasn't become the new black. I'll probably purchase more Carnifexes in the future, and most likely a few more battleforces so I can beef up my numbers. I'm hoping the Fexes will give me the anti-tank I need, especially if I manage to make some Mycetic spores (never scratch built anything, so I'm not getting my hopes up before I'm done).
I'd ditch the carnifex as JotWW will instantly kill low initiative models easily in 1 shot. I'd take 4x rending raveners and the extra points on gaunts, as that would compliment your current list fairly well. If he uses it on single swarms, then he's a dummy. That is all.
Yeah, I was afraid of JotWW as well, but since he didn't take it nothing bad came of it, and since I get to know about it in advance I think I should be able to avoid it if he decides to bring it. Still, it worries me. Are Raveners any good? I can't really wrap my head about how to use them effectively. I have some unused Lictors as well that I have no idea on how to use.
I have changed my list a bit, and will probably play him again this coming weekend. Although I must admit, I'm moving more towards a balanced list against all my opponents. My regular opponents are footslogging Orks (always 1 group of pimped out nobs with warboss, and one 30-shroom slugga group, and one 30-shroom shoota group), and footslogging IG (2 russes, everything else on foot, some heavy guns, but not many).
The current incarnation looks like this:
Powers: Leech Essence & Paroxysm
+ Toxin sacs + Adrenal glands
+ Toxin sacs + Adrenal glands
9 Ripper Swarms
+ R. Claws & S. Talons
+ 1 Venom Cannon
+ Frag Spines
I took out the Doom and Swarmlord as I was proxying the models and didn't want to. I also converted my spinefist gaunts into regular fleshborer ones, so I decided to bring a brood of those for extra bodies. The only thing I don't really like is that my Hormagaunts are 1/5 of all my points, I'm thinking that I should maybe drop a few of them and bring my 10 Gargoyles instead, what do you think? I could also drop some of their upgrades, but I'm not sure which, or if I should drop both...
The two main weaknesses you have here are zoans and carnifexes. You'll going to hate it when he blocks your zoans from doing anything with his rune priest and then snuff out your carnie with Jaws of the World Wolf. My advice is to swap out the zoans for hive guards and the carnifex for a trygon if you have the models (or if he doesn't mind you proxying).
