Hello there. I've been having some trouble dealing with an Imperial Guard list that includes; 3 sentinels with autocannons, a leman russ battle tank, a Hellhound, 2 chimeras carrying a vet squad with meltas and a company command squad. Other than that his army includes an infantry platoon.
I've been trying for some time to create an army list that will be able to beat his army. I've recently experienced that my avengers in wave-serpent setup dosn't work at all!... autocannons gun down my tanks in the first turns and my avengers are killed on 2+ by hellhound while in cover and on 2+ by battle cannon when out in the open before they can achieve anything! I wonder if you guys think that the following army list is competitive. (I've tried to keep kill point count as little as possible, while maintaining 3 scoring units, as this army must be competitive in any mission)
Avatar: xxx pts
Troop: 6 jetbikes with 2 shuriken cannons 152 pts
Troop: 6 Jetbikes with 2 shuriken cannons 152 pts
Troop: 15 Guardians with EML and a spiritseer with conceal 186 pts
Heavy Support: Wraithlord with wraithsword, EML and 2x flamers 125 pts
Heavy Support: Fire prism xxx pts
Heavy Support: Fire prism xxx pts
Total: 1000 pts - 7 kill points and 3 scoring units
Tactics: Avatar, Wraithlord and Guardian are used for advancing up the centre of the tabletop. Squad are linked no more than 12" away from each other (Wraithsight is ignored and guardians are fearless by keeping these units together). The 2 jetbike squads are used for harrasment by jumping in and out of cover to shoot (much like tau crisis battlesuits) and for capturing objectives. The fire prisms are used for fire support and to contest enemy objectives in turn 5.
- Comments and Criticism is most welcome. Thank you.
I am gearing up for a vs IG match myself though my list is more focused since it is not for a tourney.
As it stands, you have 4 chances (2 of which are mediocre since they need 4+ and aren't TLed) of taking out a tank before it gets within 12" of you. What most IG players will do is Outflank their Sentinels to take out your Fire Prisms which are more than likely in your deployment zone (but hopefully always moving 7" a turn).
I'd imagine since the Avatar and Wraithlord are the slowest units in your army (besides the Guardians) that they will try to ignore them and stay out of range their altogether.
Try splitting up the 6man Jetbike squadron into four 3man squads so that there is more for your opponent to shoot at.
Try replacing the Wraithlord with 3 War Walkers armed with Shuriken Cannons/Scatter Lasers and/or EMLs and outflank those bad-boys and start targeting tanks back armor. You might even be in assault range too. Something to think about for roughly the same point cost. Most IG armor is 5+ unless they have Carpace, I think.
Also, as good as Fire Prisms are, in a small point game like this, two might be made redundant mainly because most of the opposing army is in or are vehicles and you are relying on scatter with those unless you TLed though then they would only have the potential of taking out one unit.
Try 10 Storm Guardians w/ 2 fusion guns and a Warlock w/ a Singing Spear and Enhance (or Embolden to protect against failing a LD test if vehicle is wecked) in a Wave Serpent w/ TL EML or BL. A lot more survivable and might soak up some fire. The Guardians w/ Warlock should be able to pop a tank by turn 2 either by shooting or assault, and if you didn't have to move, they could assault the embarked units after the wreck. Just a thought.
One last thing, I'm not sure on the rules with the Guardians since I've never used defender guardians with a heavy weapon, but if you were to move them when they have a heavy weapon, I don't think they'd be able to use it all. Not 100% since it is on a platform.
Just ideas that I'm trying to implement myself.

i agree, replcae one fire prism with something of your liking, and war walkers are perfect for takg IG down.
There are three kinds of people in this world, those who can count and those who cannot.
I like your idea about getting some war walkers for outflanking and hitting tanks on side or rear armour. Something to try out I guess. The reason I havn't split my 2 jetbike squads into 4 minor squads are because of the fact that they will count for too many easy kill points... but with a little caution and good use of cover I guess you are right about splitting them up. Replacing 1 fire prism with a war walker squadron seems like a decent choice. All in all, thanks for the reply! I appreciate it.
Oh and btw, eldar defender guardians can shoot their heavy weapon from the platform while moving, so they won't get left behind by my avatar and wraithlord. This army is going to focus on resilience rather than speed. And because of the fact that my jetbikes always will end their turn with line of sight blocked by my opponent, and my fire prisms stay at the back; all close and medium ranged shots will be redirected to my avatar or wraithlord (if things go as I've planned). Hence, I do not think that my avatar and wraithlord will be ignored.
Just a matter of curiousity, do you guys think that my above mentioned army list will be competitive against other armies than the Imperial guard? My worst opponent is without doubt IG at the moment, but my list must also be competitive against other army lists. F.x. having only 1 fire prism as you suggested would leave me unable to combine their weapons in order to deal with MEQ armies. I know that 100% balanced armies do not exist, but my goal is really just to make an army list that will make me able to deal with any army list in a tournament. Strategy and luck are often key for winning a match, but having the propper army list will make the game a whole lot easier in my opinion.
Either ways, thanks for the help on an anti IG army list.
