Welcome to Librarium Online!
Alrite so I played nids through 3rd and 4th edition and I stopped playing and sold my army for awhile. I am playing again with a few friends and I have been testing out a few armies. After looking over each army in here and looking at the tips I developed a semi-competitive army for an upcoming tourny. I tested it against a sniper space marine army with a couple tanks and a thunderfire cannon. Before looking at this forum I played this army and it ate my big bugs because thats what rending snipers do. But, after revamping my list I won even with my zoanthropes terrible luck with rolls.
250 points Hive Tyrant w/ Hive Commander HVC Adr. glands regen
130 points 2 Tyrant Guards w/ Lash whips
105 points Tyranid Prime w/ lash whip bonesword Adr. glands
210 points 5 Warriors w/ 1 Barbed Strangler rending claws Adr. glands
160 points 8 genestealers w/ 1 upgraded to BL w/ scy. talons.
175 points 2 Zoanthropes in a Mycetic spore w/ Barbed strangler
150 points 3 Hive Guard
110 points 2 Venomthrope
275 points Trygon Prime w/ regen Adr. glands
295 points Tyrannofex w/ Rupture cannon Regen
Total: 1850 points (check my math im pretty sure)
The warriors will be grouped with the Tyranid Prime who will increase their WS and BS and allow the whole group to shoot well. The Zoanthropes will of course drop in and attempt to take out the biggest threat vehicle wise. The genestealers will outflank and try to tie up some guns in combat. The Trygon prime will land in and shoot up some of their long range troops aka Devastator squads and Heavy Weapons teams ect. The Hive Guards will attempt to get into range and behind some sort of wall/cover and shoot down the mid to low armored vehicles. The Hive Tyrant will shoot down some stronger troops or some vehicles if necessary just using the 9 Str. to do whatever is necessary and eventually get into CC. The Venomthropes will walk the warriors and Hive Guards up the map to avoid the AP 4 guns from instant wounding them and also provide cover for the Hive Tyrant from lascannon instant wounds. Now the most controversial model will be the Tyrannofex because alot of people are against his point value. For me, I found him worth it because last game I played the Zoanthropes failed and he managed to take out 2 land raiders. I feel that he is a good defense against anti-psycers so I still can knock down those 14 armor vehicles. I am completely open to other options though I have just found he is a good bug for the map we play on because they almost always have ruins that he can fit in and get a cover save from so he can snipe from the back if necessary.

Personally, you need more people! my advice, drop the tyrannofex. With the extra 300 points add 20 hormagaunts with either adrenal glands or toxin sasc and 10 termagaunts and that still leaves you with 90 points to spend, with that get a 3rd zornthrope, besides form that nice list, good luck!

Hey big_bugz welcome to Librarium Online!
Posting points costs of base units and upgrades is against forum policy. In the future kindly avoid posting anything but the final points cost of a unit.

I definitely think you need more Troops. You only have 2 scoring units. I would just go to town on your warriors and genestealers so you can't capture objectives. Usually at 1500pts for my troops I got 2 Tervigons and 2 groups of 10 termagants.
How has regen been on your tyrannofex? I would have thought it wouldn't be worth it considering he has 6 wounds already.
Seems like your anti-tank is sorted out pretty well. I usually play against Daemonhunters so I leave the Zoans at home, but 3 Hive Guard, 2 Zoans and a Tyrannofex should deal with them well.
What is the meta-game like around your area?
Yea I though troops would be the issue but since the Tyrannofex has no invul save and other protection he gets alot of lascannon and because of his 6 wounds when hes down to 3 or less I have a 50% chance to get at least 1 back so it's not terrible. I know the thropes are better anti-tank but if they have an anti psyker wont that screw me a bit if I can take down a 14 armor vehicle. That leaves my hive guards and MAYBE my HT to with the HVC to take down that big vehicle. Thats if I don't scatter away from it. I was hoping to just contest points but it does seem silly not to have a few more cheap units. What about another set of outflanking stealers? Or should I just get some more swarm and go with some guants?
You've got a lot of un-nessesary upgardes on your units, trimming them down should help a bit some more points. As said though, you are very low on troops, and you can contest all you like but all it takes is 1 far flung objective youi cant reach and its game over.
First up get that HVC off the tyrant, he either wants to be a dakka tyrant ( 2 TL devourers) or combat based. (2 tallons is the best set up ive come across) and take those glands off him, they're a bit of a waste.
You dont want regen on either of your 6 wound beasts, its far too unreliable compared to how much it costs to really be useful. For that matter id normally say drop the T-fex nine times out of 10, but that might leave you short on anti-tank. Be aware that just because one unit performed spectacularly one game, it dosn't mean you should always take it *hint hint T-fex* play around a bit before you take him, see if there are other options available to you, because if there are, hes the first thing to go.
Also remove those glands from that Trygon, he dosnt need them.
Your warriors want a spore pod, theyre a good unit, but the pod gets them there a bit safer, and means you get first shot on your opponent.
Actually looking at your list your very close to an all reserves set up. Theres only a few changes youd need to make, wings on the tyrant, pods for the venomthropes and warriors... Youd have to find an alternative to hive guard as they dont fit that sort of list too well, but it wouldnt be hard.... Anyway consider that one.
If that adivse dosnt float your boat, then im in complete agreement with New Nid Player, his surgestions are solid. Apply my advice about regen and the HVC to his units swaps and your on to a winner.

As everyone has said, too many upgrades. For nids, more units > more upgrades. Drop a lot of the excesses (esp. the regens) and get more troops. Also, consider a tervigon and 10 gants. Then you wouldn't have to worry at all about not having enough troops.
Record: Win - Loss - Draw: Hive Fleet Pandora (New) 32-6-6 Space Wolf 7th Co. 52-11-6
Blood Angels 12-4-2 Daemonhunters 20-8-3
Imperial Guards 12-5-2 Daemons 8-3-2
alrite i number crunched a bit and i think i found a solution that suits me more. I feel if i throw out a squad of guants that doesnt have the numbers or another squad backing them than they are just 1 squad of bolters easy target for a kill point. Rather than that I dropped a tyrant guard, the regens and some of the adr. glands in order to get a 10 man squad of stealers. This one doesnt have a brood lord but i figure if i outflank 2 squads i have better chances of getting in combat and perhaps even getting 2 squads into combat. In the tourny we play it comes down to kill points alot and I feel just a tervigon risks me throwing some kill points to whoever I am playing against. I can use my tyrannofex to contest points on my side and do my best to clean up and capture points on his side with stealers and warriors. Sound a bit better? Suggestions from there?
Do it the other way around, contest your opponents with the T-fex and claim yours with warriors. This makes the warriors more survivable because of the range (theyre more important) and the T-fex then poses a real threat to the opponent.
Also genestealers do not make good objective claimers, theyre too fragile to weither the fire, and dont have the numbers to survive it.
