What do you suggest against mech imperial guard to an 1750 point tournament?
I know that my opponent is going to have a basilisk, a medusa, an executioner plasma leman russ, a platoon and other things that I can't remember.
I thought something like that:
Orb Lord with Phase Shifter-170
(I know they work best in squads of 10, but I'm not afraid of sweeping advances when playing against IG! What is more, I had a total of 1712 points, so I added 2 more warriors to reach the point limit.)
2x3 Heavy Destroyers-390
The 1st lord is going to support the warriors with the orb.
The warriors will capture objectives and exterminate the enemy troops.
The scarabs will turbo-boost and then go to destroy a vehicle, as normal. I'm not afraid of the "vulnerable to blast" rule, due to the 2+ cover save.
The wraiths with the wraithlord are going to run fast and destroy as many vehicles as possible.
The HDs will be probably near the 1st lord to have an orb support and their duty will be to destroy all AV12 or less vehicles.
This happens to look just like my Necron army, and against mech imperial guard and a good player my experience is that you will be soundly beaten (I have been there on many occasions).
Basilisks and standard Leman Russ tanks will put a lot of ordnace templates on you, and with a big block of troops scatter will probably hit something, with all these AP3 templates relying on a resurrection orb is no more than a 4+ save, hardly earth shattering.
Your right about the Scarabs 2+ cover save for turbo boosting, but remember that template weapons (flamers etc) ignore cover saves and will cause double wounds. So, steer clear of any Hellhounds etc he may have.
Wraiths are a bit of hit and miss, yes they are useful for assaulting vehicles (and the Lord is very good) but if he parks his tanks on the back board edge and screens with troops then getting to them will not be easy and you will probably have a lot of firepower aimed at them, one wound and 3+ save can only do so much (massed Lasguns will bring them down with out too much trouble).
If he has a Psyker battle squad then this can cause problems. In one game I played a while ago I seemed to remember that they had this psychic power that reduced leadership. Heavy weapons then kill 1 Wraith, this causes a leadership check, and you are testing on a low number. This was new to me at the time but really hurt as my Wraiths never made it near his tanks.
Lastly Heavy Destroyers are not that good, due to having only 1 shot. You also have two units of 3 so can only shoot at 2 targets. I would rather have 3 units of 2. That way you can shoot at 3 targets, but keep them together for WBB rolls.
I am quickly coming around to the need for Destroyers, and lots of them (see thread called 'tired of being thrashed') started by me.
He has veteran into chimeras, I just forgot them.
So, sonoftheemperor, you think that 3 plasma cannons in a AV14 vehicles for 190 points is overpriced? I think LR executioner is just brutal. What is more, a large blast with S9 AP3 and unlimited range for just 125 points sucks, doesn't it? Seriously, what IS good in your world?
I had many battles against mech imperial guard and, most of these times, I had my army destroyed. I have also played with 15 destroyers against such armies. However, he shot all his blasts and lascannons on them and, thus, all were laid down. None of them could be saved, since none of them was standing to its feet. All destroyers were down in just 2 rounds. Consequently, I thought wraiths as the best solution, due to their 3+ invu save. Scarabs are also good, since, as far as I know, he has only 2-3 flamers in his entire army.
Most of my lists do not include heavy destroyers. However, I think that against IG with lots of AV12 vehicles, they can make a good job. I am going to split them in 3 squads of 2, as dinodeanpostcat suggested.
Its a lot fairer for you because he is using a less competitive army list, Imperial guard has access to a lot better stuff for less points, if he had a good list you would have no chance, even if you took the best list you could field, it wouldn't be enough(with normal luck on both sides.)
I have to concur with the above. It seems as if your opponents list is not making best use of the units at his disposal/in the Codex. If he/she were to do so then you would in all likelihood lose heavily.
With your list I would not hide the Warriors/have them sit on objectives but march them forwards, running if you need to. The Warriors with their Lord are high on points and can deal a lot of damage when they get close. To help with this I would put your objectives as far forward as you can, so that by moving to your objectives you are also moving to your opponents. Also play around before the match as to how best to spread your Warriors out as to limit the threat of the ordnance templates (with 2" between bases it's surprising how few models fit under the template given the correct spacing). Remember that only one model from a unit needs to be within 6" to use the resurrection orb. It can also help sometimes to have the Scarabs out in front of this phalanx as they will provide a cover save (again ten Scarab swarms with 2" spacing covers a lot of the table).
Deploy as far forwards as you can and then move the whole lot forwards as fast as you can. You can play with keeping the front rank static for 24" shots and then moving the rear ranks forward+running, then repeat with the new front rank and so on.
Use the Heavy Destroyers to taget his/her Basilisks first (you only have to get a weapon destroyed result), then the Leman Russ tanks with ordnance weapons. The Chimeras can be dealt with by the Warriors and the gauss rule or the Scarabs. I would keep the Wraiths for assaulting his units in the Chimeras once they have been forced to disembark. Shoot the transports with the Warriors, then assault the contents with the Wraiths, this is better than assaulting the vehicle with Wraiths, forcing them to disembark, then face a turn of the Wraiths being shot at, not to mention hitting on a 4+ or 6+ depending on how far the transport moved.
Thanks for all this good advice..!! So, you claim that f.e. if I destroy the executioner weapon in the top of the leman russ, it has been made useless?
