I am completely new to the game but am fairly knowledgeable, I need some suggestions any will do concerning tactics, setups, builds or warnings. For now till i get my feet wet, I'm keeping the next several fights simple(for now 500 should do). Also, suggested units to acquire is also appreciated.
Thank you for any comments and/or suggestions.

To be honest, Tau aren't too great at such a small point level, and you've really got to squeeze every bit out or your army that you can. Lukily Crisis Suits are great at taking down targets without taking returning fire, which is somehtihng you need at 500 points. Multi-trackers let you put out a large amout of fire, and fire a variety of weapons at once. Here's a quick 500 point sample list I made:
Crisis Battlesuit (TL-MP/Flamer)
6 Fire Warriors
Devilfish (SMS, TA, MT, DP)
9x Kroot Carnivores + 1 Shaper + 3 Hounds
This list is somewhat unconventional with its inclusion of a Devilfish and Broadside, but I feel they would both serve well in such a small points level.
If you'd like, I can provide basic tactics/strategy for this list, too. Help you with target priority and such.
Oh, and this list is actually 503 points. But if you're a newbie playing games for experience/fun, rather than to win, I doubt your opponent will mind. I can make a 500 point list if you need me to.
Thanks for the reply.
*I dislike kroot quite abit(for the moment) especially since i dont have any hounds or Krootox
So Im confined to what I have.
*As much as I would like to deploy a Broadside, I dont own one yet...
*Your sheer lack of Fire warriors scares me, as range is what Tau should be good at.
*The devilfish I read should be saved for larger point battles and to my knowledge cant be used for kroot, also the last thing i want to do is rush an opposing army with ranged units...
As i said before i don't have too many units yet, hounds, Krootox, and Broadsides are not yet available to me(not until next payday at least).
I did a lot of thinking today about possible tactics and Unit designs, here's round 2:
HQ: Commander Shas'el-CIB|PR|TA|HWMT|= 100pts
T1: 11x Fire Warrior's-1x Shas'ui w/ML|PRx5|PCx5|= 130pts (missile marker, pinning)
T2: 11x Fire Warrior's-1x Shas'ui w/ML|PRx5|PCx5|= 130pts (missile marker, pinning)
E1: 1x XV8 Shas'ui- TLMP|TA|HWDC|GDx1|= 63pts (Deathrain variation, w/guard)
E2: 1x XV8 Shas'ui- PR|MP|TA|HWMT||=72pts (Distraction/Irritation)
I know my first opponent's tactics, he has bikes and a truck geared for quick CC insertion.
The 2 fire warriors and HQ are aimed towards the main enemy force, the 2 elite's are off to the side(s) drawing some attention(and question) towards them. As soon as a truck or bike enters range the marker-lights and missile pods will light em up. The goal is to split his force and impede his progression for CC, the XV8's can handle themselves and the troops have the HQ for backup.
Looks good and shooty. Only thing I might change is to throw in one less PC per FW squad (6 PRs and 4 PCs). If you're set on using th Shas'ui to markerlight things, you won't be moving much, and it would be nice to have as much 30" range as possible. The extra shot at 12" is nice too. Either way, I'd be interested to hear how well it works.
Oh yah, almost forgot to mention: I do 500-pt games against an Ultramarines army pretty often, and my unit of 3 vanilla stealth suits always does very well. Even better, very rarely do I lose any of them. Might be something to consider, especially because, if nothing else, they'll drive your opponents mad every time they fail the night-fighting rolls to see them and lose an entire round of shooting. It may seem like a point-sink in a 500 pt game, but my opponent is usually more concerned with my Crisis plasma-ing his marines or Broadside popping his Razorback. His ridiculously cheap, twin-heavy-bolter-wielding, armor-save-ignoring Razorback. But I digress. Best of luck in your games, and let us know how they go.

*forgot what all my units could do (example: the twin-link function)
*Corner Castling is a must!!!
*needed to reread the core book again...
anyways I have been doing some mock battles trying different 500pt squads. here's a new list let me know what you think...
HQ: XV8 Shas'el; TLPR, TA, BK=95
E1: 2x XV8 Shas'ui; TLMP, TA=106
T1: 9x FW Shas'la; all PR=90
T2: 9x FW Shas'la; all PR=90
H1: XV88 Shas'ui L; TLRG, SMS, TA, HWMT, HWDC, 2xSD=120
Tactic: All units Corner Castle, Xv88 opposite corner(within at least 24-30" of rest of unit). The hope is that the enemy is forced to split his/her army or focus fire in one direction and suffer from the neglected group. The Shield drones add to the survivability of the XV88. The HQ's Knife is used JIC a unit is being targeted heavily, otherwise he acts on his own or with the elite unit. In simulation this list works well, but I would appreciate any input.
Yah carbines never work as well as you hope. If you really want to pin, a sniper drone team might be good, but probably not for this points level. I think you may have given your guys too many goodies though. For your Shas'el, TA and twin-linked is overkill. Hitting on 2+, you shouldn't need rerolls. Here's a list I put together. See if it helps at all.
HQ: Shas'el Fireknife(Plasma Rifle, MP, multitracker), HW-TA 97
Elites: 2 Crisis Shas'ui fireknives (PR, MP, Multitracker) You could add TA's here if you find they don't hit enough 114 pts
1 Crisis Deathrain (TL-Missile Pod, Flamer) TL and flamer mean high BS isn't necessary, or at least shouldn't be 46 pts
Troops: 2x 8-man FW sqauds (these could be lowered to 7-man to give the fireknife crisis TA's) 160 pts
Heavy Suppt: Braodside Shas'ui (the lower point one...blanking right now) w/ A.S.S. (keeps him able to move, since you'll have fewer targets to shoot at low points) 80 pts
This gives you 4 crisis suits (one of them an hq), 2 squads of infantry for objectives and a base of fire, and a broadside for taking out the occasional vehicle. Numbers are important in small games, and this list gives you bodies. Keep in mind that the 2 fireknife crisis aren't meant to be in one team, I just wrote them like that to save space. Let me know how your list works, and mine as well if you end up trying it. Good luck.
Yeah I just noticed that the TA on the HQ was overkill so I switched it out to a fireknife build, also I only own 3 XV8's. unless you meant a Target Lock take a 2nd look at your pt totals... Again good point on the TLMP not needing TA's too much. Tooled around with the list some, here's one slightly better I think...
HQ: XV8 Shas'el; PR, MP, TA, HWMT=97
E1: 2x XV8 Shas'ui; PR, MP, MT=124
T1: 8x FW Shas'la; all PR=80
T2: 8x FW Shas'la; all PR=80
H1: XV88 Shas'ui L; TLRG, SMS, A.S.S., HWMT, HWDC, 2xSD=120
This should cover most of what I might encounter...

I like the list as it stands except for the HWTL on the Shas'el. As he is a lone model, I think the points would be best suited somewhere else. Possibly on BSF if nothing else strikes your fancy.
Now then, to keep him protected, I would reccomend attaching him to a unit of fire warriors. On your move unattach him by jumping away. Fire your rounds and move back to join range with your assault jump.
If nothing else, this could give your Shas'el increased wounds if you can do without the mobility.
Moded the list, removed the HWTL and added a A.S. system to the XV88.
Thanks for the tactic's, you can join a unit in the assault phase? Thought you could only do that in the move phase...?
Support you right to play video games, its for the greater good...
My mistake. You can only join a unit in the movement phase. I don't know where my mind was. Sorry for the bad information.
For the greater good.
