    Expanding Tau army 500 -> 750 points

Hi guys, I've recently started playing a Tau army, and am now looking to expand it further.

So far, at 500pts, I've been using pretty much what you get out of the battleforce, my army list looking like:
    Shas'el (PR, MP, TA, HW-MT) - 85pts
    XV8 (MP, BC, MT) - 50pts
    3 Stealth suits - 90pts
    12 Fire Warriors - 120pts
    Devilfish (Disruption pod) - 85pts
    10 Kroots - 70pts

So far I've mainly been facing an IG army a friend has (thus the BC on the Crisis suit, for example), but will soon meet other armies too.

I'm looking for advice on what to expand to 750, and then to 1000, points with. The above are the models I have right now (+2 kroots), but I'm likely to get some more Fire Warriors and another Devilfish (from a friend) soon too.

What would you guys recommend that I get for the next 250 points? This is a list I've tried to get together for 750 points, would appreciate any comments/advice!

    Shas'el (PR, MP, TA, HW-MT) - 85pts
    XV8 (MP, BC, MT) - 50pts
    2x XV8 (TL-MP, TA), (TL-MP, TL) - 101pts,
    3 Stealth suits - 90pts
    10 Fire Warriors - 100pts
    Devilfish (DP) - 85pts
    10 Kroots - 70pts
    Hammerhead (RG+BCs, DP, MT) - 165pts

    Total: 746

The last few points could be spent on a HW-Blacksun filter for the Shas'el, I guess. Or possibly change the XV8 with MP/BC/MT to a TL-MP/TA.

I would highly recommend the Hammerhead or another Heavy hitting piece. In my experience with Space Marines and Daemon hunters, I would always need or want a heavy backup that can cover my troops as i get them down field. Perhaps some pathfinders with rail rifles? (for a cheaper idea)

    You have 5 options available:

    Pathfinders and a Sky Ray

    Hammerhead

    Broadsides

    XV8 Battlesuits

    Piranhas

All can be useful in a tau army. I'd probably say though, out of the five, a hammerhead. At low points, I'd magnetise it, as when I was a tau beginner, I chose awful options for my army, and got shredded. If you change your mind on how to equip things, instead of forking out £30 for a new hammerhead, pay £3 for some rare earth magnets.
Current Armies: Tau, Dark Angels, Wood Elves, Bretonnians
Side Projects: Imperial Guard, Dark Eldar, High Elves, The Empire

Thanks for the tips guys! So would you say this is a good list for 750pts? (Same as the 750pts listed above, except changed the configuration of one suit to another Deathrain.)

    HQ:
    Shas'el (PR, MP, TA, HW-MT) - 85pts

    Elite 1:
    XV8 (TL-MP, TA) - 53pts

    Elite2:
    2x XV8 (TL-MP, TA), (TL-MP, TL) - 101pts

    Elite3:
    3 Stealth suits - 90pts

    Troop1:
    10 Fire Warriors - 100pts
    Devilfish (DP) - 85pts

    Troop2:
    10 Kroots - 70pts

    HS:
    Hammerhead (RG+BCs, DP, MT) - 165pts

    Total: 749

    Is your Shas'el priced right?
    You have it equipped with:
Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, Targeting Array, and Hard Wired Mutli Tracker, correct?

I keep getting a diffrent points total?

Any way, with your expansion you could start making some of your XV8's Fireknifes. These will be more versitle and hard hitting than your Deathrains when you expand to difrent opponents. I do agree withthe Hammer Head route though, too. One thing, when you get the box set be sure to buy the Sky Ray Box, It comes with all the options for a Hammer Head, as well as the turret for a Sky Ray.

    Notes;

HQ: priced wrong; should be shas'el>MP,PR,TA,HWMT=97pts
Elite2: ditch the TL, you'll want to focus fire.
Troop1:make it a squad of 6xFW, you dont need any more than that.
Heavy:ditch the MT, you shouldn't need to move if you've placed everything correctly.

    as for suggestions;

    *More XV8's
    *Piranha's make excelent vehicle poppers/blocker's
*Broadsides offer great consistant long range support

    hope that helps...

I fully agree with Blood Seriph. the other units to add on are all a question of what you want to do. if your worried about enemy troops over running you go with Piranhas or broadsides. the XV8 would be a good support or multi use piece.
