Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hello! I am very new to Warhammer and this is actually my first attempt at an army list. My goal here is to make a Tau army that includes most of the different unit types.
Some of the point values are rough because I haven't decided on what items to select from the Armoury. Most of the items I have specified I'm not really sure on so advice on Armoury choices would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

To start with read all of the stickies posted in the tau empire board.
HQ: Ethereal's suck, get a shas'el fireknife TRUST ME on this.
ELITE: dont bother taking a stealth team, try for full teams of 3 XV8's, 2FK squads and DR should do nicely.
TROOP: drop the unit down to small 6xFW squads, as for your kroot unit drop the krootox and shaper a team of 10Kroot and 5hounds is cheap and effective for the point cost, I'd suggest 2 teams.
FAST: ditch the shas'ui upgrade its pointless. DROP the stingwings, they're not worth it, take another piranha or pathfinder squad.
HEAVY: put a Disruption pod on your hammerhead.
Thanks for the advice Blood,
I'm interested to know what advantages there are in breaking your troops down into smaller units if you have time to explain it.
I would like to keep the Ethereal, Stealth Team and Stingwings in this list. I know they aren't popular choices but I want to have as diverse an Army as I can so that I can gain some first hand experience with all the different units.
I've just started reading through those stickies =D Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
As for you question;
*small footprint = less chance of line of sight
*smaller points cost = more for harder hitting stuff XV88, railhead's etc...
*troops are required for taking objectives so its best to have many low point squads VS 1-2 expensive large squads
*a Note on carbines; don't take em they are next to useless you'll always want rifles, you'll NEVER want to get that close to the enemy's front lines.
I commend you for wanting to use less than optimal units(XV25's), next to useless units(stingwings) and the... REALLY bad units(ethereal).
But I find it kinda... pointless to buy, paint and field a unit that you may never use again after the first time...
Stealth suits: they cost too much for what little they can do, sure they got stealth but their weapons have range 18' and most sight distance checks average 18-21" so be for-warned...
Stingwings: they look good but in the end you have far better choices for your fast Force slots.
Ethereal: if you lose this guy, EVERY TAU unit takes a morale check which if your in standard tau corner castle deployment the chances are WAY too high that your army will all run away due to our army's low Ld.
Besides the preferred enemy rule only works in close combat, and tau dont do that well at all(we stink bad, even farsight sucks)
Try them out but trust me go the route of mechanizing your army and you wont regret it.
I agree with Blood Seriph on the Stingwings, they are way too many points for essentially a guardsman with a jumppack and a stronger hotshot lasgun. However, i think that XV25s when used in the correct way can actually be very effective, however, you have to commit to getting 6, and all TAs, now i know that this is expensive, (240pts without FBs, use points from Stingwings) using it as an infiltrating/outflanking firebase can be really effective against alot of armies. For example say your are playing a Vanilla SM player with a 5 man Dev. squad in the corner of the board, infiltrate your suits to within 20" of them (keep out of sight and away if not going first) and first turn devastate them. This tactic also works wonders against Eldar Dark Reapers, IG Heavy weapon squads, or even small scout squads.
Also, check your points on your Broadsides, you must take a battlesuit support system for each member. You MUST take at least 1 drone with the Drone Controller. And last piece of advice, give your Hammerhead a Multi Tracker, will help you keep out of assault range all together
My Dice keep me in check
You need a 1+ XV8 commander. Vespids are useless, so are stealth teams. I'd swap them for a full unit of Fireknives and one of Deathrains.
Current Armies: Tau, Dark Angels, Wood Elves, Bretonnians
Side Projects: Imperial Guard, Dark Eldar, High Elves, The Empire
