Hi Guys, I am currently playing as Eldar, but fancy something new. Was considering Tyranids, and after going through the Codex, came up with the following list (usually play long range attack with Eldar, so a CC army will be novel):
Swarmlord for pure cc greatness
Doom of Malan'tai (I had 95 pts spare)
Zoanthrope x3 - for the fire power
Hive Guard x 3 - again for fire power
2 broods of Genestealer x 10 inc blord, all with scything talons, t sacs, a glands - most feared cc you can get really
Trygon prime with a glands, t sacs, regeneration - just for the shock of this beast emerging in my opponents army
As for tactics, I plan on having the Doom with the Zoans, wandering up one side causing a bit of shooty havoc, 1 brood of Genes coming up the middle, covering the Swarmlord who will be there for support. Then the HG on the other side taking care of business. Then when my Space Marine opponent is getting comfortable, have the Trygon emerge inside his lines, followed by the 2nd Gene brood to take care of any units my first Gene unit cant reach. Obviously the Deathleaper will emerge in his own time from whatever cover we have in play and instil fear and death in the poor marines. In my head this sounds good. But I have no experience playing with Tyranids or against, so I may be making a few mistakes.
FYI I know I am 5pts over 1500, but my opponent and I have an agreed 5pts leeway
Please be gentle. This is my first post
This is not a bad list at all but I would make some small changes, for example I would take off most of the upgrades for the genestealers and outflank them, I would also consider a mycetic spore for the doom of malan'tai since dropping near units pretty much gives you 10 wounds and the blast up to S10 without worrying if it will get there since nids are no longer immune to instant death. I would also consider 1 or 2 tyrant guard for the swarmlord and some more troops maybe a unit of 30 guants. Maybe take out the trygon or take off some of the upgrades like regenerate.
A list that I've found found works a lot is;
Swarmlord with 2 tyrant guard
2 tervigons with catalyst, cluster spines and adrenal glands on both
2 units of 10 termagants
2 units of 10 genestealers
2 hive guard
Doom in a mycetic spore
But ultimately it's up to you and go with what works with your stratergies, hope this at least helped,
Hate to say it, but the list is pretty poor to be honest. You've got too many points attempting to build super units of death which is NEVER a good idea.
So ill start from the top:
Swarmlord: Too slow, and expensive for this level of points. Never take below 2000. He may be great in CC, but really hurts your list. Especially as hes got no protection.
Doom of manalthi needs a pod, and at this level I dont rate him. Axe him for some more hive guard.
Zoanthropes need a pod.
Genestealers - very very poor im afraid. Yeah theyre good in CC, but they'll never get there. Ever. All it takes it one shot from a large blast weapon of almost any description (heck bolters will ruin the squad near enough) and that expensve brood is gone. If you want to run stealers, take 8-10, optional broodlord and thats IT.
Trygon prime - regeneration is worthless, toxin sacs make you WORSE in CC against anything T4 and below, which is obviously most units, you dont need them at all.
Also you dont have deathleaper and cant take him, so im slightly confused as to where hes coming from.
In all honestly i think theres just too much wrong here to bother trying to correct it, youd end up with a totally different list anyway. Go back to the drawing board, write up a new list and try again. To help, follow these steps:
1. Dont focus on deathstars (Ie those genestealers.) Tyranid infantry is pretty fragile so dies very easily, and the MCs are expensive. As a general rule you dont want more than 1 upgrade on any of your little bugs, and then the bare minimum on your big ones. Genestealers almost never need upgrades bar a broodlord if you want, hormaguants should always have toxin sacs, NEVER take toxin sacs on monstrous creatures and almost never taken regen.
2. Make sure you have enough anti tank, before you start going mad on the anti infantry, Anti tank should be a prioritory in a nid list. Always. Tyranids can deal with infantry in their sleep, tanks are a different story.
Good luck, and sorry for not being able to say anything better about the list, but it would need so much work your better off making a new one.
Your friendly neighbourhood gargantuan creature
Thanks guys. A real eye opener. And there was me thinking I could easily throw something CC together. Just goes to show I am too much of a shooter. Will take all into consideration and create a new list. Would people recommend that I take 2 hive guard units then, one as a HQ retinue, and one as an elite???
Deathleaper was on my original list, but sacrificed him for hive guard. Excuse the mistake
