    1500 points, First nid list

I am looking to start tyranids some time in October and am using that the time till then to work out what to buy, this is my first list and consists of stuff that i think is gonig to be usefull and cool.

    HQ
Hive Tyrant, scything takins x2, adrenal glands and hive commander. 205

    Elite
    3 Zoanthropes 180

    Troops

    20 termagants 100
    20 termagants 100
    30 hormagaunts, toxin sacs 240
6 warriors, , venom cannon, rending claws 255
    Tervigon, catalyst 180

    Heavy
    Trygon Prime

The main idea is for the three units of gaunts to screen the warriors and the tyrant while getting across the battlefield as quickly as possable. The trygon is gonig to deepstike for the first couple of games just so i can get a feel for it then i aim to try it on foot. The tervigon i might outflank with it so i can hopefully get it somewhere vital and start spawning stuff.
Now a few points i am not sure on, the hive commander upgrade means that you need a 3 for the second turn reserve rolls right? As for the warriors i just gave them all rending claws is this the best way to run that squad, finally is outflanking a tervigon a good idea?

    Thanks in advance.

This is an OK list. If I may I would like to make some suggestions.

    - Get rid of one Zoanthrope, buy the squad a Spore.
    - Get rid of the Warrior Brood and add a brood of 3 and a brood of 2 Hive Guard (these guys do wonders trust me)
    - Buy a Biovore.
    - Now, I would suggest completely getting rid of the Hormagaunts and buying yourself another Tervigon with Catalyst. That leaves you 105 points to play with. Buy yourself another 13 Termagants. Then buy both your Tervigons Toxin Sacs and Adrenal Glands.

I can understand if you do not want to get rid of the Warriors, because they are so cool! regardless, you need to reduce the unit size so that you can field at least one brood of two Hive Guard.

This gives you a nice, generally all-rounder list (see @number6 's thread in this forum for details, he has a link which shows you an awesome list).

    Hope this helps.

Im in agreement with the warlord, currently you have next no anti tank which is VITAL for every nid list (footslogging zoanthropes are slow and actually quiet fragile) and a lot of your units are somewhat over upgraded.

So firstly I would impliment all the Warlords surgestions, (though I would hold off on the Biovore. 1.... is a bit weak) though possibly 2 broods of 2 Hive guard might be okay. Comes down to personal prefernece a lot.

However I would look into meerly reducing the warrior brood and adding a tyranid prime instead of that tyrant. Tyrants dont really work in 1500 I find, seeing as to get a decent one your looking at 260+ most of the time. In this case your tyrant would desperatly need a tyrant guard, a slow 4 wound T6 model that cant really find a lot of cover is never going to go well. They should always have either wings or a tyrant guard, no exceptions. Generally this puts them into 1750 and above, its hard to do at 1500.

So if you axe the tyrant and replace him with a Prime with dual boneswords, adrenal glands and a deathspitter youve already saved 100 points, so thats one brood of Hive guard. Losing the hormaguants (who are normally best of in broods of 20 by the way) gives you enough points for a tervigon and leaves spare to properley equip them too (as the Warlord said, Adrenal, Toxin sacs and Catalyst.)

Warriors arent really a ranged unit, yes they can do okay especially with a prime bumping up the BS but their true strength lies in combat. Because of that I rarely give them a heavy weapon. It just means you wind up shooting at range and slowly advancing when you could be charging up the field ready to chop stuff up close! A brood of 4 with Dual boneswords and devourers will cost you 160 points, so a saving of 95. When you add in the cost of trading a zoanthrope for a spore, youve now got enough points for that second Hive guard brood you badly need.

So the list would look like this:

Tyranid Prime - Dual Bonesword, Deathspitter, Adrenal glands

    2 Hive guard

    2 Hive guard

    2 Zoanthropes - spore

Tervigon - Toxin sacs, Adrenal glands, Catalyst

    20 Termaguants

Tervigon - Toxin sacs, Adrenal glands, Catalyst

    20 Termaguants

Cheers for the replys, and yeah i like the ideas a lot, model wise, if the prime as its a warrior does the warrior box set come with boneswords? if the warriors arent used what is the best thing to replace them?, without the warriors i would have 185 points spare. The options i was looking at instead of them would be either a carnifex with the heavy venom cannon or some raveners.

No it doesnt come with Boneswords, which is what I think you were asking? There are a few options, some people cut the tallon and reverse it which looks cool, some people use ebay where you can normally find a few good sculpts and some people who're really lazy *cough me cough* just paint the tallons in a different colour and do some fancy squiggles to make sure they look distinctive.

Carnifex's are useless sadly. Being hit by the nerfbat in the new book didnt help, then the plethora of MC killing stuff in recent books mean tough MC's are the only ones worth taking (The only exception to the rule, the harpy.) Also always specialise, if your going to take an MC go with 2 guns or 2 combat weapons. Never one and one. Raveners are okay, but honestly 185 is basically a trygon, which is damn awsome.

There's a kit on eBay right now of a dual Bone-sword and lash-whip set, can't remember how much it costs, but it looks 10x better than all the options listed previously (turning the talons round? Seriously?).

As with the advice, just listen to Heirodule. Nothing more needs to be said.

So to answer your question again, Warriors don't come with Boneswords in the box set. And I find that the best unit size is 5, always kitted up for close combat (if you really want guns, give them Deathspitters). I would use Shrikes because they're faster however they're save is just too crappy.

@Heirodule , I thought the Prime boosted WS and S, not WS and BS? Now that I check, I have been much mistaken. Combat Warriors... do we take AGs? S5 does a lot (wounding Nobz on a 3+ yes please!).

    And at nerfbat!

It looks better than it sounds honestly. Some look a bit oversized and silly (ive seen a fair few people use the arms that almost look too big for a carnifex to represent them) but if you do it right it does look pretty similar to the bonesword from the tyrant kit, just not flat

Thats a tough one. On rending warriors Id go toxin sacs on the basis you can already punch through vehicles and re-rolls means more rends, but with boneswords its certianly worth it, mainly for I5. S5 is fun for vehicle killing if needs be
