Welcome to Librarium Online!
I basically got some Tau from a friend and have since started playing them, i dont play any competeitve games, always just at home with friends. This is my current list, i know there are a lot of things that are expensive and probably not the most effective, however they do suprisingly well. Im more so just looking for a few tips on how to use the list more effectivley and what could be added, i was think a unit of sniper drones or another HH.

I'm guessing by AttDrones you mean Gun drones? I would suggest against putting them with suits since they have T3. Also you might seriously want to reconsider the ethereal. He costs too much and if he dies, which he will cause everyone will put as much fire on his unit as possible to take him down, then your army risks running off the board edge. You can shave some points by not upgrading the Kroot armor and taking away the troop and Pathfinder upgrades. But to each his own.
I know that a lot of people don't run the Sniper drones, because they are a bit wonky. If the drone controller gets hit, then the drones go bye bye. Though I personally would love to run a unit of three of them. I just don't have them yet because of the shift to finecast.
Also I'd prefer to fill up two units of three broadsides and one Hammer head for my HS slot. The Broadsides with sheild drones don't get shaken/stunned and get a much higher volume of fire. My opponents always focus fire onto Pathfinders and my one Hammerhead. The hammerhead with the DP is amazingly resilient and will just keep taking shot after shot.
I know it's not competetive but I'd rework a lot of the list. For such a high point game you only have 5 crisis suits and 3 railguns. You're going to need a lot more access to high S low Ap weapons in that high of a game.
But if you're having fun with it, then don't let me ruin it for you. I will say your next investments should be suits and broadsides though.
Thanks, and yeah i mean Gun Drones, this is basically all the models i have at this stage, apart from O'Myr, im oredering that Friday. I did think about dropping the ethreal, but i think the honour gaurd are good because of BS4, i always hide him somewhere useless anyway, and i might shave the Pathfinders points, they arent meant to be assaulting so EMP's are useless really. Broadsides are something im considering maxing out, 3 is the only way to go. A 2nd HH would give me more meneuverability but less firepower, was also considering a Skyray, I like the idea of having different units.
I also want to max out the crisis suits all the way, but im going to keep the stealth suit in there, alot of people dont like them, but i do find them good at harassing the enemy and drawing fire, an expensive unit for drawing fire ill admit, but good at it never the less.
Without getting more pathfinders I dont really see a reliable way of getting more markerlights, hence the fact why ive been considering the skyray, having 2 at that hight and being networked gives me the 6 seekers and a mobile BC turret(or is this really only a godd theoritical idea)
Skyrays are a perfectly fine tank. They get a bit outshined by the Hammerhead's raw firepower, and the fact that the Seeker Missiles are limited. But you can always run a Skyray and have seekermissiles on some vehicles for a little extra power. Using the vehicles near the front for seeker missiles first and saving the Skyray and it's salvo in the back.
One thing you could try is running two small units of pathfinders. 4 markerlight shots each from a unit gives you a little more diversity.
Stealth suits are perfectly fine, I like the little bastards. I know they don't have the firepower they should have, but they can be fun to deepstrike and divert an assault unit from hitting your lines.
Most people take barebones FW, but again it's up to you.
The ethereal is a big no no for Tau really. I know you think you can hide him, but any S6 template weapon would instakill him. Save the points to use for other units. I know the BS4 honor guard sounds tempting, but it's simply too points heavy.
Really as a simple suggestiong, I'd advise shooting for around 1,500 points. Keep the essentials such as suits, broadsides, and hammerhead. Put in the neccessary troops and see what you have left.
I thought about doing a 1500 point list, but we jsut never play small games, we seem to just play the highest point level we can either legally get or the the most models legally anyone can take within the FOC, sadly my tau are lacking here, i have 5 HQ's, 4 Elites and 4 FA for my SM's. I would split my PF but ive only got 7, gonna drop my Ethreal for the time being and move the FW to the troops section, since they are 12 (including drones) i can put them in the fish.
Just a question regarding Drones units, I eventually want to get a unit of Pirahnas, that will be maxed to 5, these will also be heavily uprgraded, my question is though how effective is it to run a unit of Drones in FA?, their LD sucks ass, but i think by being fast, relativly cheap and having TL'd weapons with pinning, they could have some uses or not?
This also my plan with the Pirahnas, to un-attach all the drones in a turn to have another "Free" unit of drones" to wall units or block assaults, can this work?
Keeping in mind, my mate has played a total of 3 games against my tau and no other, and my wife has never played against them, im playing rookies and im a Tau noob too
thanks so far, its helping alot
most people don't run the Piranhas in more than units of 3 because of their size. Though having a total of five would get you a unit of 10 drones to jump around the field.
Onto drones. I personally love these guys. They are cheap for a fast moving, somewhat tough, and decent hitting unit. There are two ways that I have used them to my advantage.
First is a mobile screening unit. They are able to keep up with the suits and protect them from assault units. Just be sure you never charge with them. Always let your opponent charge, it will buy you an extra turn of fleeing with the suits.
Second is a deepstriking unit. Take 6-8 drones. Deepstrike, the Pathfinders Devilfish lets you re-roll the scatter if you mess up, and try to land them behind enemy armor. This is always a good harassing stratedgy and makes your opponent shift focus to his table edge.
If going against Orks or IG you could always drop some gun drone squads into the back field and let them cause chaos.
The gun drone is a decent and actually resilient unit, most don't give it enough respect cause they are used so little. The other FA choices also provide a bit more reliable takedown of armor with a bit more perks, so thats why the drones get pushed aside.
