Welcome to Librarium Online!
So, I am thinking about getting a Necron army after my Tau and IG and I was thinking of a small 750 point list to start with, I am aiming for quite competitive but a bit fluffy as well, you know, the whole blocks of slow moving warriors with towering monoliths behind them? Anyway here it is.
Necron lord with res orb
2x 10 warrior squads
If I'm correct this comes to 735 points? I really don't know what to spend the other 15 points on. Tactics wise the main idea was to have all these units at the back of the board and wait for the enemy to come to them, all the while being pounded by fire from the monolith which is also helping with WBB. When enemies get close enough to assault, the idea is to teleport units to the other side of the board (I heard somewhere that monoliths can teleport units out of cc, can anyone clarify this please?) meaning the enemy army has to slog it all the way back again and take fire from both sides. I'm really not to worried about the monolith getting hurt because there is only one guy who brings str10 other than me and that consists of a single broadside and hammerhead. I know from experience how easy broadsides are to take out. One str8 blast and they're dead. I should know, I use them. I would really appreciate some first class advice. Thanks in advance
Just wait a few more weeks when the new Codex comes out. Those will probably still be good units to buy though.
Well the Necrons are due for a new codex as what SJPhillyVT mentioned already.Yes your does add up to 735pts with the extra 15pts you could give your Lord 'Phylactery' which costs 15pts which lets your Lord get back up with all his wounds (if you roll good), or your could give him a 'Warscythe' which costs 10pts which lets him ignore armour & invulnerable saves which brings it up to 745pts & if you want the extra 5pts give him 'Disruption Fields' & as for your question about the monolith yes he can pull units out of close combat, hope that helps!
p.s sorry for any spelling mistakes i don't have my codex in front of me atm
Thanks for the info I know people say the codex is going to be updated soon but you never know, no matter how respectable the sources. That's why I went for a Lord, 2 squads of warriors and a 'lith. I know they're staple units in the codex so if I get them now I won't have anything useless and I won't be a bandwagoner (not that there is anything wrong with that), plus I'll have an uber cool army of metal death . I'll probably still end up buying another hammerhead at the moment though. Any advice on the tactics I'm going to use? Too slow? Monolith too big an investment at this points level?
Well apart from shooty armies (Tau or IG), making the enemy come to you while having the mono shooting & supporting your units seems like a viable tactic & although the mono might be a bit too much points for such a small game being able to fit more units in without it, i wouldn't mind seeing how this ends up
Tell us how it goes
Another great unit to have is Destroyers. They might be a better investment at 750 points, and I don't think they'll be too nerfed in the next Codex.
I will let you know when I get the models, I don't have any yet. That's why I was asking around, trying to see what was competitive yet fluffy and making sure I didn't end up buying models I would only use once *cough, vespid, cough*.
Hey man, i like the idea of your list. I think you're on good lines however I think one of the best necron units are destroyers. I know someone else stressed this point earlier but im here just to really put it out there. With high toughness, weapon strength and having 3 shots at a 36 inch range is brilliant. They can handle a mixture of units, I played a school league tournament that was meant to be 600 points, with a 10 point leverage either side which allowed me to have a lord, 2 squads of 10 and 3 destroyers. They're simply flawless against shooty and close armies. Their speed allowed me to move out to the flanks and wreck each side so the main phalanx of troops could easily take on whatever was left. In some instances there wasnt anything left.
IF USED PROPERLY THESE ARE YOUR BEST UNITS!!!
Hit anything as they are strength 6 AP 4, heavy 3. This means move behind their tanks with turbo boost then hit that rear armor. With most troops you wound on a 2 or 3. You cant go wrong with these guys!
750 point list for me would be
Lord - 100
10 warriors - 180
10 warriors - 180
5 destroyers - 250
which works out about 710 - spend the rest on upgrades for your lord.
Hope this helps! good luck with the gaming! And yes it is 735 points

Well, destroyers do look kind of awesome... but so do monoliths. I guess I'll have to get both when I get the money
I have also been thinking that destroyers might help me transfer from tau because they use their movement to great effect while the rest of the army is rather ponderous. It lets me get used to 'crons play style while still having something very mobile. The only problem is they can't Jump Shoot Jump. As a side query can the destroyers fire after turbo boosting?
