Recently me and a few mates have discovered Warhammer; we're all making 1000 point armies and I've fell in love with Tau. I've bought the Battlefroce and have 2 more Crisis suits in the mail. I've throw this list together and read though parts of the codex, but I'm not sure on it because I've never played a game before. Would I be able to get some opinions from some more experienced gamers or some help on how to improve the list.
I've also got some stealth suits but they don't seem worth it?
Do not use the Kroot Shaper. He isn't worth the points, especially when giving him an upgrade weapon.
Read through the tactica and stickied posts in the Tau Forum for advice on what's good to use and how to load them.
Great first list! Only one thing really sticks out and that's the Shaper.
Also the Shas'o is maxed out at BS 5. The TA will not raise it further. Try bumping it down to an 'el and putting on the TA, it saves some points.
Maybe some shield drones on the broadsides and suits with the shaved off points.
Lately, I've been on a stealth suit kick, but honestly, if you aren't going to use the third elite slot, breaking up crisis teams into 2 two man squads and a monat gives you a lot of flexibility. This is a very professional first list. A build like this suggests to me that you have been reading around on good Tau builds. This is definitely a good idea, as the Tau codex is nearly 5 years old, and fairly undermatched against anything you will encounter out there. We must play tight and fast and we care about every single point put into a unit.
Tau, unlike the majority of armies out there, aren't about building strong units and throwing them out there, but about having a strong coherent strategy that every unit has a part in. The list you posted is very well done and will teach you a great deal about the game and the Tau. It will teach you to hate broadsides because they are static. But it will teach you to love the railgun power that such a unit brings to the tabletop. Every unit has strength and weaknesses, and there are people who will rabidly defend both sides of each debate, right down to the best number of Firewarriors in a squad. This place will help you to see things you might have overlooked, but the best teacher is experience. You must adapt to the local conditions. Good hunting.
And now, for the critique of your list:
Type: Light gunline and mobile / mechanized counter attack element
Primary strength: Anti-tank Broadside artillery system
Primary weakness: Very little rate of overall fire / lack of scoring units
Directed course of action: Avoid 'static' Broadside firing lanes. Disable / destroy opponents single mobile scoring unit, claim home objective and center objective. In KP missions, avoid Broadside firing lanes, use mechanized infantry to get close to the enemy. Deepstriking or flanking units deny enemy Broadsides from providing adequate covering fire. Use superior firepower to destroy Kroot and firewarrior squads, use anti-transport weaponry to disable or destroy Devilfish. Destroy suits as time permits.
The army is fairly well balanced, which is fine because it means that I have a suitable target for a well balanced field. My anti-tank has a target, as does anti light infantry and anti heavy infantry. The list is well put together, and hits every major point made by veteran Tau players, but is very predictable and generic. Will do well as a general army that is further specialized and refined as player devises their own play style.
Kroot shaper is worthless.
Split your XV8s
Split your XV88s
Consider adding another devilfish and splitting firewarriors, thereby giving you another scoring unit.
Gareth is the person I try to impress when I convert and paint.
Put a targeting array on your devil fish. Throw in one more broadside or XV8. Maybe put in some markerlight drones with the battlesuits.
For such a low point game the marker drones would just be excessive point sinks. You could get 2 shield drones for one marker drone and it'd be far more useful than a 50% chance of one marker token.
