So, me and my freind have decided to enter the upcoming Tournament in February - you guys probably know about it too. Basically, you are allowed to buy a battlion box and an HQ and that is the army you take to the tournie. The two of us are total 40k noobs (we've had a grand total of 2 games between us) and we both fully expect to get annihilated by everyone, especially since my buddy has started a Ravenwing army so he basically has a Ravenwing box (6 bikes, an attack bike and a land speeder) and he's going to convert Sammael for the tournament ahead (so him and another land speeder as he wants him in a land speeder instead of his usual jetbike thing). This basically gives him about 500 points of stuff.
As Necrons don't have a battalion I got to buy 2 boxes of Warriors, 2 boxes of Immortals and an Annihilation Barge. Dave, the store manager, was happy to let me enter the tournament with this - was this good of him? I can't tell, in all honesty.
Necron Overlord; Phaeron; Warscythe; Ressurection Orb; Phase Shifter; 195
+ 10 Immortals; Gauss Blasters; 170
12 Necron Warriors; 156
12 Necron Warriors; 156
8 Scarab Swarms; 120
Annihilation Barge; Gauss Cannon; 90
Don't know if I will be allowed the Phaseshifter, just added it in because I could. Between us we have a lot of shooting (mostly provided by me) and not a whole lot of close combat potential - I assume Ravenwing are not combat orientated. I have scarabs (for eating tanks) and guass for a chance of a glancing hit on tanks, and plenty of anti-infantry. Sticking the Phaeron with the Immortals seems like a solid idea to me.
I have an idea of what my freind is doing (probably more of an idea of what he is doing himself, lol), I know he's taking multi-meltas on both his attack bike and land speeder, and Sammuals speeder also has twin-linked assault cannons and another set of twin-linked weapons, heavy bolters I think.
So, yeah, can't really change my army much as it is all I've got. Could you guys help me out with some tactics? And was it good of Dave to allow me this much stuff?
Awesome! Thank in advance for any responses
this is IMO a solid overall list, and since im unfamiliar with the tourny (and too lazy to look it up) will you too be playing together versus another pairing? You are right to assume that ravenwing isn't very combat oriented, their main strength is mobility, but they also have decent firepower/survivability. Their main weaknesses are model count, and a dated codex. Your army goes a long way to assuage these weaknesses, since your warriors present a decent amount of models and your dex is brand new.
Since your army isn't particularly mobile your pairing could work in your favor (assuming is is a doubles tourny). overall i like the list and i recommend that you both get some games in before the tourny so you can asses your strengths/weaknesses both as individual armies and as a pairing (playing eachother goes a long ways aswell).
Well, considering the fact that no-one else is able to bring a competitive list either, being limited by the battalion boxes, I think you list should do fine. There is unlikely to be much mechanized around and Necron infantry is very good for its points.
Revenant Moon Necrons: (W/L/D) 0/1/0 (6th edition: 13/2/2)(5th edition: 14/6/4)(3rd edition Codex: 16/4/7)
XIX Legion: (W/L/D) 0/0/0 (5th edition: 14/12/2)(5th edition Codex: 4/3/0)
Black Legion: (W/L/D) 1/0/0 (6th edition: 2/3/0)
Something Wicked... Reikwald Beastmen: (W/L/D) 10/4/1
Thanks for the responses
List is good, I thought it was good too and probably have a bit more stuff than what I'd get in a Battalion box. I think Dave knows we are both new and my freinds Ravenwing wouldn't bring enough to the table, so he let me have a little extra. Seems that way, anyway!
We are going to get as many practice games in as possible before the tournament (Jimmy has other models to play with he just won't be allowed them in the tournament), mostly against each other as we try to get to grips with the rules. That'll be next year, though!
As for tactics:
Scarabs for tank hunting (shouldn't be many around if Polaria's advice is accurate ). If there are no tanks, will go after any big guns and try and lock them in combat to stop them from shooting.
Two units of warriors for holding objectives and shooting everything as much as possible - might pair one unit with the Barge and the other with the Scarabs so they can help each other out.
The Lord and Immortals can move, rapid fire, then assault, so will be using these guys quite aggressively, punishing a threat with a solid amount of firepower before (hopefully) finishing them off in combat.
Just a few thoughts at the moment. Once I've had more games will have a better understanding of what I am doing!
