Welcome to Librarium Online!
I am new to Eldar and I love the wraithlord and guard models. Would I be able to build a nice army around those models and be semi-competive at the same time?
I usually play against Orks, Dark Eldar, and Space Marines (Blood Ravens, Raven Guard, and Smurfs). Thanks for the input guys and I cant wait to be able to field an Eldar army.
Well the armies you listed above have all 3 types of gameplay. Horde, shooting, and meele which means your list needs to be pretty diverse. At 1500 points wrathlords tend to get shotup so you need to either take none or 2+. The other problem is they take up a heavy armor spot but they are extremely tough. Let's start out with your Hq:
HQ: I would suggest a farseer if you are going for a list that uses guardians and wrathlords. They have amazing powers but the nice thing is you can take warlocks and buff your normally weak troops. For 125 points you get:
Farseer W/ Conceal, Guide, Spirit stones. He will be able give 1 unit rerolls on shooting and 1 (Or the same) Rerolls on armor. This will make guardians tougher and your shooting units hit harder.
Now on to Troops:
Guardians are ok but they are very weak. For the 4 more points I would go dire avengers. They gain range, stronger weapons, better armor, and better skills. Plus a group of 10 is a good investment and they look like guardians just tougher. I would run them in serpents to give them a little speed and they live longer. Plus the shimmershield will give them a 5+ inv save in close combat so they will live longer!
10 Dire Avengers mounted in Wave Serpent with bright lancer and spirit stones
W/ Exarch W/ Shimmershield and Dire EX PW for 292 points
They will hit hard and be able to hold objectives. The spirit stones mean they can always keep moving. Get them within 18 inch's of a target and watch them lay down 20 S4 shots with ap5. The Waveserpent will keep them safe AND give you some tank popping ability so you can pop a tank, drop them off, and shoot then survivors. Take at least 2 units probally 3!
Points each 292
Well this is up to you but seriously consider fire dragoons. They may not be cheap but they hurt things! for 245 points you get
4x dragons W Exarch W firepike, tank hunter, crack shot! That means you get 4x 3+ hits of str 8 ap1! and! 1x shot of str 8 ap1 with rerolls to wound. They are the best anti-tank we have. If you don't take out the tank assault! They each have melta bombs! 8+2d6 AP!
I have never been a real fan of the fast section of elder but there are some bright units. This I will let you look yourself I NEVER use the slot.
Heavy is my favorite section in Eldar. We have some MEAN units.
Fire Prisim, order 2 of these baby's for a 48" range template str 10 ap1 shot. it rips though anything and everything and with the range they are hard to take out.
War walkers are the most firepower you can pack in a unit. Seriously 1 unit of these put out more firepower then most armies! for 180 points you can equip 3 of them with scatter lasers and throw 24 str 6 ap6 shots a turn! It hurts! Problem is they are fragil and you will want to keep them in cover or max range. Pair them with your warlock and they are hitting 16-18 str 6 shots a turn. It will make ANYONE cringe.
Dark Reapers are nice but kinda fragil due to being only 5 for 200+ points. Good if you have spare points.
Wrathlord is the unit you wanted to know about. He is tough, mean, and packs a punch. With an amazing toughness and armor save he will piss off most armies. 2 is even meaner and some people will not play you if you use 3. He is like a tyranid bug but with more firepower and strengh and the ability to beat anything silly. For 130 points a pop you can use them with bright lances to shoot as they move forward or you can get the cheap version for 100 points with a Shrunken cannon and make everyone unhappy having 3 of them for 300 points. Warning they are slow and the enermy will shoot everything at him. Good news, he will shoot everything at them leaving your more fragil units alive!
Falcons, they are more survivable wavesepents for 50+ points more and get 2 extra str 8 shot. They are ok but I use serpents instead.
Well that is a little overview take a look I hope it helps.
Yes, wraithguard and wraithlords can be competitive as shown by some tourney performances. With fortune and some cover they can survive a whole lot and actually hold a location, something mech Eldar have a problem with (typically I fight most of the game nowhere near the objectives in order to force slower opponents to move away, and then leapfrog them to win, but this presents a risk of something going wrong more than being able to just dig in might give you.)
However they aren't neccessarily the easiest to use, and due to their high cost it might be hard to operate at 1500 points once you start adding in things like a countercharge unit and try and fill out the other troop choices get in enough anti vehicle weaponry and whatnot.
Thanks you guys.
So should I invest in the battle force or just by the units seperately? And I will try to come up with a list sometime soon and post it.
Actually Guardians are a good example. They used to be good, and it wasn't uncommon to see lists filling up all six troops choices with them, and that was in an edition where everything was scoring, the only reason to take more guardians vs some elits was because they were actually good. At that time DA just sucked.
Obviously things have changed, and they'll change again sometime.
Awesome! I will invest in one after I finish up my 'nids. NOM NOM NOM
Guardians where only good when you could take a heavy weapon for every 5 Guardians, and the minimum squad size was 5.
On the list, I have seen some good armies themed around Wraithlords and Wraithguard. I don't know how they are in the tournament scene but for casual play they quite something to bring to the table. 30 Wraithguard and 3 Wraith Lords with a full seer counsel is both impressive and hard to counter. Sadly it is a 2000pt build and like 500 USD to buy.
Army's used: Space Wolves, Tomb Kings, High Elves, Tyranids, Tau and Eldar.
Thats crazy expensive. I was thinking fielding one squad of 10 Wraithguard with 1 Wraithlord and then filling it out with other units like a couple full squads of dire avengers and waveserpents.
