Hi I've just started collecting eldar and am doing some research into how to build my army up and most of what I've been reading has said not to bother equipping my vehicles/war walkers ect. with star cannons or bright lances as they aren't worth the points however my main opponents will be SM, predominantly blood angels heavy on dreadnoughts and death company, and I was wondering whether it would be worth paying that bit more to ensure they all go down nice and easy?
The problem with Eldar Star cannons and BLs is not that they are bad weapons but they don't fit well in the army. Let me explain you a little more on this:
1)The weapons tend to be enshadowed by the rest of our units performances. You say that you want to kill SM and BA.Take Banshees then. You want to gun down Land Raiders.Take Dragons. Not to mention that we have the best anti-tank unit in the whole game that's for sure. Fire Dragons can destroy any war machine that your opponent throws at you with ease. Having said this Lance weapons seem a little not worth it.
2)Both weapons are overpriced.Comparing a BL with a Dark Eldar Dark Lance (same weapon/different name)
our gun costs 10-15 points more! Why is that? Ask GW.
3)Both weapons are restricted to be wielded by BS3 units/vehicles(Guardians/Vypers/Falcons). This means that we lack the units to support them.
If you want to include them for fun reasons go for it. No problem butin a competitive game they just won't make it.
Hi and welcome to eldar.
I agreed with Reroll on the BLs, that fire dragons do the job better.
But you mention that you are going to battle BA, which often includes FNP. I have found that starcannon to be very effective againt FNP-units due to them ignoring the rule. So in that instance i find that it is good to bring SC, but they are expensive, so i would just field when fighting armies which include a 3+ save and FNP.
I put the Star cannons my troop serpents as fire support, due to them being twinlinked and compensate for BS 3. it seems to work even though the starcannons dont get a lot of credit on the web. I also tried to put them on a squandron of warwalkers, it worked ok, but thats actually too expensive for what you get. WW are too fragile compared to their cost when they are eqiupped with SC.
Good luck with those pesky marines.

Starcannons and Bright Lances enmasse are just not effective points wise. Doesn't mean you can't take a couple of them though. I have in the past run a 3 strong warwalker squad all armed with starcannons and out flanked them, my opponents hate that combo because if their squad is in the open there is little chance of blocking LOS from since I can come in anywhere on the side table edge. It is expensive, 240pts if memory serves me right, and only 6 shots will hit going by math hammer and only 5 will wound so for 240pts killing 5 marines a turn is not bad in of itself but at AV10 the warwalkers aren't going to be around for long. I usually use them to target a squad of termies that I would otherwise struggle with.
The best way to deal with FNP units though is banshees and fire dragons. They will kill just about anything you want them to, just remember to doom the unit the banshees assault, 5+ to wound is not reliable.
EMLs will also ignore FNP due to being twice the toughness value of marines, instant death wounds ignore FNP and its AP3 so will eat up power armour quite nicely and is a bit cheaper that starcannons and BLs while still giving the capability of taking out AV12 fairly decently.
thank you so much for all your advice x
Just an update: Brightlances and Star cannons got better in the new edition. Both get +1 to the damage table when hitting a vehicle.
well banshees do not ignore feel no pain anymore so ya. only if it doubles toughness.
the thing isnt even that theyre not effective there are no platforms that do them justice. even the price ould be ok if there was a way to spam em.the cheapest way is war walkers and guardians and both arent worht it.
What we have if cheap S6 shots so scatterlaser spam will drop marines pretty fast. I would say pack Bright lances as they are really useful now but instead of star cannons pack scatter lasers.
