This is my first post, and Tyranids is going to be my first army in 40k. I have just sat down with the codex and built a list that I think will work well, but I hoped I could borrow some of your vast experience to tell me of any disastrous mistakes I've made!
I like the idea of rushing into combat, and hitting the enemy from all angles at once. So here goes. I dont want to bore anyone with exact points costs and little upgrades since I'm really interested in the broad strokes at the moment...
The core of the army will consist of a 5 strong unit of warriors armed for close combat. Two units of hormogaunts and a screen of gargoyles bulk out the numbers. As the centrepiece I'd like a Tyrannofex with a cannon. This front can then sweep forward with the big guy hopefully blasting any big targets on the way. The warrior unit would be led by a Prime.
Coming in from all angles I'd have a unit of genestealers, a trygon and a carnifex in a mycetic spore. Finally I'd have a winged tyrant to patch any gaps that opened up. I'd basically be trying to minimise ranged damage and closing with multiple units to overwhelm the enemy bit by bit.
One last disclaimer. I'm totally new to the game and this plan is ignorant of the rules or the scenarios that I'll be playing. I've made this list to get a feel for how my force will play and how much it will cost too! I'd love to get some comstructive advice from grizzled old nids out there, and I really hope you can help me. Thanks for reading!
Sounds like a good plan, I'd definitely ditch the Trygon though. Get yourself 2x2 Hive Guard instead, you'll be surprised at how crap 'nids are at anti-vehicle otherwise. Apart from that, not bad, I'd like to see the list!
Well believe it or not I've already bought the trygon! I thought I'd start with an awesomemodelto fire me up. i'm interested in your comment about the anti-vehicle stuff. I dont understand the rules of taking them out but i thought all of the big guys in tyranids could walk through vehicles? Thats how the codex makes it sound anyway. What does the hive guard bring that anangry carnifex doesnt?
Sorry for the typos. Im writing on an ipad andit doesnt like spaces...
Well if you've already bought your Trygon I wouldn't take it out. And I too love the model
Your point is valid, Tyranid MCs are very good at killing vehicles once they get there. But that's the thing... they might not get there. And most vehicles are faster than 'nid MCs. So by the time you've slogged your way up to one end of the field, they're already spitting bullets at you from the other!
That's why we rely heavily on our Elites section to get rid of these. They're the best ranged anti-tank that we have. Hive Guard bring a strong, tough and reliable anti-tank source to the battlefield for not too much of a cost. Carnifexes should be used for multiple purposes whenever possible.
One 'solution' to this is my deploying Carnies in Mycetic Spores, however that is inefficient and ineffective as almost every vehicle will outrun a Carnifex any day.
By the way, check out the General Guide to Tyranids if you haven't already done so. It's a place where I've poured out a lot of information into one post, and there have been other add-ons by veteran users there. Check it out, you'll learn something!
I guess im putting more faith in the rupture cannon than is healthy! Thanks for the feedback, ill definitely check outthe guide you mention, and im going to try squeezing somehive guard into the list. I'll probably drop the carnifex as it sounds like it would be doing their job anyway. Also I will post the list with points and upgrades when I get a chance later today, just to finetune any points. Thanks again for the swiftadvice.
Of all the things you could drop I don't think you should drop the Carnifex. The Trygon is really the thing you should be dropping, as it won't add much to the list yet. Anyway, that's your decision to make, I'm just here to help you fine tune.
I'm happy to help anytime!

If you ignore the colour coding, this is my list that I've put together very quickly. I hope you'll understand any abbreviations. where would you shave the points off? I should also mention I think someone has bought me a Tyrannofex/Tervigon kit for my upcoming birthday....
Just to explain the colours, blue is what I've got, red is what I'm aiming for to get models on the gaming table ASAP.

Just finished reading the guide. Very interesting stuff! I was happy to see that my list reflected some of the stuff you were talking about, i guess i must be in tune with the Hive Mind!
