Welcome to Librarium Online!
So I stand here, ready to buy Kroots in a few days.
Now, what should I buy, and what should I do with them (in terms of modelling)?
I think I'll be converting normal plastic models to Shapers, instead of buying expensive blisters. I think I'll be buying a metal Master Shaper, though.
Now, I need a 750 point list.
I have absolutely no idea which units are good against what, and I don't know which units work best with other units.
I was thinking something with Hunters and Vultures, but then again I'm clueless.
If someone could help me out, it'd be great.
Well, not being a Kroot Merc. player (and a barely recognisable Tau player, as I have less than 500 points), I don't know how good my opinion will be, however I do study most of the armies a lot.
So, here we go:
1) Anti-Tank: I have found that your HQ's are the best for this, unless you want to give a bunch of Eviscerators to all of your squads and hope they can get to the enemy. Shaper Councils seem like a good idea, too.
2) Vultures: These guys are good. Moving with Jetpacks, 2 attacks (3 on the charge) each, and basically just the same things as normal Kroot, I think they'd perform very well.
3) Head Hunters: Great against High Toughness opponents. A full squad of these guys will get 20 attacks wounding those HT guys a decent amount. They also retain the usefulness of a normal Kroot squad.
4) Kroot Hounds: I'd say go for a squad of these guys. They're really nifty, IMO.
5) Hunters/Trackers: The snipers of the army. Some have said that the Trackers aren't very good, however I disagree and I find them to be a really cool conversion idea as well as addition to the army.
6) Of course, get lots of Kroot Carnivores. The basic core of your army, and they are very nice.
I know that all of these won't be in an army, especially at 750 points, but I hope that it helps a bit. ^_^
Ok, well for starters, you'll need some kroot carnivore squad boxes. You'll need at probably four of these to start you out. In the beginning this will give you plenty to work with for modelling. That will give you 64 troops to build and paint, trust me, that's going to take a while.
For this army size, and timing, I'm going to ignore buying kroot hounds for now. Rather, I'd work up a Vulture squad, unfortunately I figure it will be roughly 12+ men strong. So what you'll need is some wings, if you have an idea of what to get, great, otherwise use Dark Elf Harpy wings. Hopefully your store can help you do a bitz order where you dont have to pay for shipping. They can be found online at http://store.us.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.us, search for "Harpy AND wings". I'd get 15 to start out with.
Next, if you do not have any space marine or imperial guard friends, you're going to need chainsword and melta-gun bitz. Again, look for those on Gamesworkshop's store.
All of the purchases I've suggested will cost you roughly $160, plus some tax, not bad.
For your beginning army, you might want to forgo an evo adaptation, and just try to use overwhelming numbers. I'd try not painting or modelling to a specific evolutionary adaptation until you know what you want.
Hunters and vultures are excellent choices, one lays down a suppressing fire and targets high toughness targets, the other moves fast and tries to get into combat. The rest of your army right now will mainly be carnivore squads, plus one master shaper. Outfit each of your carnivore shapers with an eviscerator, and the master shaper with wings and a melta-gun with veneration charm on it. Thats going to be a basic army for right now, and will let you get a feel for things, dont worry about figuring out Trackers, stalkers and headhunters right now, just work with those basics.
Remember the key to a kroot army is going to be successful navigation of terrain, if you get caught in the open you are dead. Your entire army has effectively got bolters on them, so they are good in shooting, bad against armor. Taking the eviscrators and the Master Shaper's melta-gun will help to compensate for this problem. At 750 points, you shouldnt have to worry with armor too much.
That should give you ideas on what to buy and how to outfit them, any more specific questions feel free to ask.
Personally if I were going to buy a blister for a Master Shaper, that Lizardman skink priest with his head chopped off has just caught my eye today, and I bet he'd make an excellent choice over the regular Shaper Blister, but I dont know in practice, yet.
just start off with heaps of trops then when you get more moolah (money) upgrade them to vulture etc...
Well that was fun
Right, thanks for the help.
My budget is quite limited at the moment, So I don't think I'll buy more than two Carnivore Boxes, and one Shaper blister (for the Master Shaper). No clue where to get the Meltagun from, though. Any ideas?
I think I'll begin with a 700 point list instead. It will lead to less things-that-aren't-really-useful-but-are-still-included-to-use-up-every-single-point buying, don't you think?
So, my list would look something like this:
Master Shaper @ 132 points:
¬* Power Weapon, Meltagun, Melta bombs
¬* Venetration Charm, Mark of the Favoured Child
2x 11 Carnivores @ 176 points each:
¬* ¬* ¬* ¬* ¬* ¬*Shaper:
¬* ¬* ¬* ¬* ¬* ¬*¬* ¬*Eviscerator, Shuriken Pistol
¬* ¬* ¬* ¬* ¬* ¬*¬* ¬*Venetration Charm
10 Vultures @ 216 Points:
¬* ¬* ¬* ¬*Frag Grenades
¬* ¬*¬* ¬*¬* ¬*Shaper:
¬* ¬* ¬*¬*¬*¬* ¬*¬* Eviscerator, Shuriken Pistol
¬* ¬* ¬* ¬*¬* ¬* ¬*Venetration Charm
Every model has got the Ork Hybrid upgrade.
@ 700 points, 33 models in army.
Now, what needs changing?
Also, do you think Carnivores work better in big or small units?
And, which wings should I buy?
Clueless there too.
I really would stray away from spending $10 to get a single metal kroot. I'd really give a look at the skink priest blister if I were you, or just do good conversion work on a plastic kroot myself.
Anyways, you only had two choices of wings, but there are three, I personally like the third one not listed, but thats just me. If you can't see it online, check it out at your hobby store, they should have the 2004 Gamesworkshop order guide.
I myself got a mix of two, and there is no reason why all kroot should have the same wings on them.
Ok, as far as your army though Carnivores should work better in big groups, although sometimes small groups can help you find cover easier. At 33 models, your list is too small for kroot, but you really can't do much about that at this point with the budget, so best of luck to you with what you've got.
Oh, and it is time for me to pick up the CA2004 and smack you in the head with it, nothing personal, its what I shall do to all those who make a kroot list that lacks a KROOTHAWK TOTEM.
Arrrgh. How could I forget it?
Of course I'll bring a Totem.
Now, I really like the Shaper model you get in the blister. Besides, I feel that every HQ should be metal.
Also, I like it better when the models are of the original "race". I want all my Kroots to come from either a Carnivore box or Kroot blisters (with the exception of wings, Eviscerators, etc).
About the wings, I have yet to see what the other ones look like, since the pictures of them seem to be down on every single GW Online Store.
For wings, I used Mage Knight and other minies, Gargoyle wings work great too.
EViscerators are 2 handed, so don't wast points on a pistol.
If you need bits ask around in your hobby shop, and offer to trade and buy them, people always look out for them to make conversions.
Here is a list at 750 pts.
All models have ork hybrid
Master Shaper 126 pts
Power weapon, meltagun, MotFC, KHT
2x Kroot Carnivore Squad 209 pts
1 Shaper, Eviscerator
1 Shaper, Eviscerator
"... My budget is quite limited at the moment, So I don't think I'll buy more than two Carnivore Boxes, and one Shaper blister ..."
But I do like the list. I'll probably buy more boxes later on, and then I'll give it a try.
The pistols are there, because I had some spare points. They aren't there to confer an extra attack, because I know that's not possible with a 2H-weapon, but instead there to have the Shapers do something in the Shooting phase.
