Welcome to Librarium Online!
Hi there, I'm a Tau player first and foremost but I was thinking of expanding on the small kroot force that I have and making a kroot mercenary combat patrol, but then I realised :-
You MUST take one Troops Choice for a combat patrol -> The only troops choice to a Kroot Merc force is a carnivore squad, which MUST include a shaper -> a Shaper has 3 wounds and you are allowed no model with more than two in a combat patrol!!!
You see my dilemma, is there anyway around this.
Thanks in advance.
I think you can bypass this problem, ask a GW rep or your tournament organiser.
Just pay normal points cost for the shaper and give him 2 wounds instead of 3.
I think you're actually supposed to leave him out (don't have to pay points for him either). The combat patrol rules don't always fit with normal armies, but they normally override the codex. This would be my next best guess. Sure you pay a little over what he should be, but at least you can take your shaper. If you convince your gaming group, maybe they'll let you reduce the cost as well.Originally Posted by samurai_socks

This issue is addressed at the bottom of page 182 of the rulebook.
Thanks for the responses guys.
This is a sore point for the majority of Kroot players. Where I play (Lampeter Uni) we play a variant of the Combat Patrol rules (based off the 40K in 40mins rules when they first appeared in WD a hell of a long time ago). We have 500pts and the Kroot are allowed to have the Shapers for their units so long as they are not a HQ choice (this is the only exception to the rules apart from ordinance weapons being banned. Some ImpGuard guy had two Basilisks!!!! I told him to sod off at that point! A fast moving recon patrol with heavy artillery??? WTF!!!). With the Kroot having the stats that they have there is not much point in not allowing them. Also you get a lot less bodies to soak up enemy fire. My Shapers come in at about 60pts each. Mainly 'cos they are very tooled up.

yes this is true, but stick to alot of carnivores and you should have a decent amount of bodies, and pick your fights
