The theme is all aspect warriors, no more than one of each squad. This list incorporates ALL of the aspect warrior choices, including Shining Spears and Dire Avengers, with each unit lead by an exarch.
After several attempts to come up with an "exarch/aspect themed" biel tan army, I may have finally came up with one. I was looking over my last list wich included two tanks when I said to myself, "If I'm going to go with an aspect-themed exarch-themed army, I may as well drop the tanks and go all out!" So I dropped the tanks and decided to add the two least-used aspects to my army. These are the shining spears and dire avengers. Many people think that these aspects suck. Perhaps they do. I'm out to prove them wrong and get a cool themed army at the same time.
Farseer (83)- singing spear, fortune, runes of witnessing
9 Warp Spiders (240)- Exarch with Power Blades and Withdraw
9 Striking Scorpions (191)- Exarch with Scorp Claw, Stealth
9 Howling Banshees (165)- Exarch with Executioner
5 Fire Dragons (114)- Exarch w/ firepike
5 Swooping Hawks (157)- Exarch with Power Weapon, Sustained Assult
5 dark reapers (233)- exarch with missile launcher, fast shot
3 Shining Spears (185) - exarch with evade and skillful rider
9 Dire Avengers (142)- exarch with diresword
The list is now significantly less mobile and has less anti-tank weapons. The Banshees, Dragons, Avengers, and Farseer will now be forced to fleet around. This will be d6 inches less movement than with transports (as the transports would still want to shoot). However, the list is now much more powerful against mid-light infantry. The spears will serve well to destroy "devestator" units and their equivalents. They can also be used to coorinate devestating attacks with other cc units, or to swoop down and finish off weakened units. They can fire their tl catapults and dive back into or behind cover. They can even sneak behind tanks and charge rear armor with a flurry of str 5 attakcs- or they can zoom about and grab objectives. The dire avengers provide extra support. They can either add a bunch of shooting attacks to support another unit's charge, or charge in themselves.
This list is more cumbersome and less mobile than one with transports. However, you must admit that an all aspect army is pretty sweet, well themed, and cheese-less. Plus, imagine if I pulled off a win using shining spears AND dire avengers, !
Let me know what you think about the list/idea or if you have any suggestions.
If you wanted to go PURE aspect, you could get permission from opponents to run a phoenix lord as your HQ instead of a farseer. Otherwise, I love it! But then, I'm mainly concerned with fluff as I haven't really played yet.
Good idea about using a phoenix lord as the HQ. However, that would sort up put whatever aspect he was from in a sort of "leadership position" fluffwise.
Perhaps an avatar would be fluffier/cooler? Its just that they're so darn slow.. but hey, if you're going with this sort of list its clear that you're not exactly a power gamer...
if you're going to take spears, either take 2 spears and an exarch with brightlance and evade or a unit of 5 spears for a cc punch.
other than that, you'll have to be a very very good tactical player to make this army work, it's just too fragile.
