Welcome to Librarium Online!
im new at this site, so this is my first post! (awaits applause)
anyways im financially challenged and ive been buying things here and there for my Tau army mainly what i think would help out greatly.
i started out loving my kroot (a little too much) to where i lost horribly. when i grew out of my kroot obsession i looked to heavy power. still not working. so then i came up with the perfect Tau battle philosophy:
lots and lots of troops!!
so now i have 40 fire warriors and 20 some kroot. with a few other things to bat.
i decided that if i was able to overwhelm the enemy with Tau, then i should do greater than before.
and guess what??? so far i was right!!
so i came up with a Tau army list for 1850 (well... 1851)
since i havnt been doing my greatest (that is, losing, but not as bad as before) actually a couple games ive won!!
well this is what ive came up with so far
Ethereal w/ honor blade = 60
TL Plasma Rifles
Bodyguard X2 =184 (both combined)
TL Plasma Rifles
Stealth Team (4) = 115
Fire Warrior Team X3 (12 per) = 471 (all three together)
Fire Warrior Team Ethereal Escort (6) = 85
Kroot Carnivor Squad (20) = 208
Vespid Stingwings (6) =102
Drone Squadron (7) =84
Hammerhead Gunship 175
Drone Controller (2)
Sniper Drone Team (1 spotter, 3 drones) =80
so heres my stratagy:
the stealth team is just to psyk them out. for reason they always go for them. i have the broadside to take down the tanks (duh) or have fun in his own little corner picking off infantry, lol.
the Hammer head i love for its subunition round. i took out an entire unit of banshees with just one sub, lol. that was fun.
the snipers i just got, havnt used them yet, but the main purpose is for them to pop off a couple infantry dudes and then pin 'em, then my vespid come swooping in and mop up. plus the snipers can easily take down a tank side armor. (*waits for objection*) usually.
my fire warriors love picking off IG and nids. we just have the best time with that. im not afraid to assault with my FW because i figure sheer numbers would help. the kroot sit in a bush ad get their 4+ cover while popin off tons of peoples. they get close enough they assault, but usally sit in cover. the shas'o and retinue have always held their own
i had them go up the flank, they killed another Tau's Shas'o, Broadside, Pathfinder team, finished off last half of FW team, then killed two FW teams of 12 and then mercifully crushed the head of an Ethereal. see...
well im giving you guys this to pick apart for flaws and then tell me every problem in my stratagy. that way i can learn whats wrong, fix it, and try again.
im testing this 1850...1 point battle later tomorrow (Fri)
i will come back later that night around 90 ish and give a battle report.
see ya guys soon
well, i personally am also new, but not once have i seen it posted ANYWHERE that assulting with Tau is a good idea... regardless of numbers, a 2ws is to low to count.. i cant help with much else and i wouldent trust my own advise further then i could throw it.
(hence my battle score 3 lines under this...)
Tau'cena Intercept Legion W2-L4-D2
well what amazes me so far is my tau have done outstandingly well in close combat so far.
one unit of fire warriors completely owned a unit of demonettes.
i guess the weakness on this part is im a little too confident in my tau's dice rolling luck. lol.
Wow, doing well in CC with Tau. The only time I've managed to do well in CC with a Tau army was when I took Human Auxiliaries. They managed to take out a 3-man reaver jetbike squad and a 10-man (i think) Raider squad by themselves, and this was a 6-man squad and the game had to be stopped due to time constraints.
The list looks to be fairly good, although I'm not a fan of single Broadside units, either throw in some shield drones or more broadsides, I know you said you are financially challenged but if you can shell out for a Forgeworld XV88-2 do it, the model is far superior to the GW model, if a little trickier to assemble and paint.
As constructive criticism I would say drop the sniper drones and bodyguard (make use of the commander's IC status) and throw in another Hammerhead. Also I would lose the ethereal and retinue and throw in a pathfinder and another stealth team if possible, 2 3-man teams work great, easy to hide behind most scenery and you can cause a bit of confusion in your opponent as to whether to go for the 2 stealth teams or for the hammerheads leaving you fire base free to pick the best targets lit by the pathfinders if they are still alive.
Ok I just had to do a double take. It's understandable that you can hold your own in CC against another tau force, but you're telling me you've been lucky enough to beat nids in CC with firewarriors? Or even IG in CC while they're shelling you with ordnance templates?
I notice you said you're not scared to assault them, but have you had success with it? In my experience IG and nids can easily destroy any number of firewarriors in CC. I've even had 1 marine scout (rest of his squad was killed in shooting) win multiple combats with my 6 man strong vespid squad. You must have some amazing luck, but I wouldn't rely on it.
As for the list, bonding is a waste of points, as is an ethereal honor blade because he should never be in combat. Bonding firewarriors doesn't matter that much, as they're dead by sweeping advance if anything at all catches them in CC. If the ethereal gets in combat and dies the vast majority of your list will have to take morale checks upon his death.
Your broadside is extremely illegal, he has 4 support systems when you are allowed one. Disruption pods aren't great due to skimmers rules making them somewhat obsolete. If I were you i'd drop some points somewhere and buy some devilfish for my troops. Drop the target lock on the stealths and max them out if you can, they're best when maxed.
You need more ap 3 penetrating guns, so you might want to take more vespids or suits. I'd say take more crisis suits for plasma, as terminators have a 2+ save and they're demons when they get too close.
well tonight i played the battle with my 1850 listed above. i loved the sniper drones though. they took out the hive tyrants guards and a warrior before he realized their threat level. my kroot assaulted the hive tyrant and would have owned him if he didnt keep saving the 5 wounds i got on him each turn.
my broadside died 2nd turn. two frikkin gene stealers!!! my stealth held their own in combat vs. some genestealers. i charged and killed 4 of them, he killed one. i killed one more before he slaughtered the rest.
my crisis then finished off the remaining buddies, but had difficulty killing the brood with the missile pods. his brood lord then got into CC with my fire warriors, my fire warrior squad got assaulted by a frikkin carny. my ethereal charged the carny got two 6's to hit, two 6's to wound, then he saved both and turned to cut my ethereal in half (rather annoyed)
it ended with him having three zoanthropes, 2 warriors, the damn annoying hive tyrant with one wound, and the carny.
i had 3 fire warriors, the spotter sniper dude, a full unit of fire warriors, and my crisis suits untouched.
oh yeah, and my killer GUN DRONES OF DEATH swooped in and killed two genestealers in CC lol, yeah!!!! lol
well it turned out he had a 2000 point army vs. my 1850, and i still held my own the first 2 turns. i managed to tie victory point wise, (but hes a frikkin rule freak and said "we didnt declare it was victory points") i hate rule freaks like that.
oh yeah and my vespids completely went suicidal. they jumped up all full of themselves and were dropped by charging genestealers.
well i gotta go
oh yeah and i wondering if i should get Commander Shadowsun, or just try to get more crisis.
