Welcome to Librarium Online!
ive been debating with myself which i should get. farsight seems kool beause i could use a butt load of crisis suits.
aun'va (aka old dude) has a couple kool effects. army is fearless and something about a counter-attack rule.
shadowsun just plain looks kick ass. not much of an advantage.
or should i just stick with a shas'o?
I like farsight just because he can semi hold his own in CC which is kinda funny for a tau, but really as far as effectiveness, the majority of all 40k special characters aren't that good, usually you can make a better and cheaper version from the codex. but special characters are fun to use and very fluffy so i'd pick which one you like the best, i just wouldn't field any in a tourny...
I completely agree with Psionic...
I'm trying to put together a list with Farsight and have discovered that often you have to give up much more than you get points-wise. Put it this way, for Farsight's cost you can almost get a whole unit (6) of stealths, which, if used right, are perhaps the best units in the army.
However, it is a relatively fun exercise to do, and much easier to create a theme-based (fluffy) army with a special character than without one, IMO.
Think about how you want to play (I know everyone says this, but it's true!), and go from there. Do you want tons of crisis hiding and jumping and shooting and hiding (and shooting)? Or a sneakier, high leadership army (haven't played w/Shadowsun yet, as fluff-wise I can't)? Or a fearless one? Myself, I chose Farsight because I love suits (that's why I like Tau and dislike Shadowsun).
Hope this helped.
fluff-wise my tau are neutral. not breakaway, but not proud of the communist "do it our way or die" thing the empires got giong on.
so far i just like to outnumber my enemy. it boosts not only my confidence, but when you see more tau than nids it gets a little demoralizing for the nid player, lol.
im only gonna have a problem with bigger things like carnies, tanks and demons. just because i only 2 railguns and one unit of crisis, im trying to get another unit.
i was also thinking of making my own character. my own little special character similiar to Farsight. but since im a neutral party im kinda like an ambasador, but nids dont tend to nogotiate. so like Farsights ork hunting think i was gonna have him have a nid hunting thing. and maybe a kick ass halber like the dawn blade, but with a kooler name, and different (but equal) stats.
I like farsight, with a full bodyguard. Give each guard a MT, MP, and BurstCannon, and you get alot of shots, before charging into combat to finish them off. But that is alot of points to throw into a squad.
But then again, if you'd like to boost your morale, and scare the enemy, just bring that out of your traveling case, and maybe take a pic of opponent's face

Our special characters cost alot because they all make up for something our army is seriously lacking of. Of course shadowsun is not worth 175 points for combat, but if i can give most of my army a leadership of 10 instead of a leadership of 8 i am more than happy to pay the extra points to get that.
Farsight and shadowsun are the only ones that are reasonable even in friendly games, aun va is just terrible as he can only contribute to the fight in CC, and it's quite possible that even a cheap marine assault squad could kill him. And when he dies, you get two abilities that make tau better in CC, which means they're still killed in CC by nearly everything even with those abilities. And he's an absolutely massive number of points.

Ask yourself why in the world would you trust a win loss record? Playing them yourself is the only way to tell.
The true joy in the game is playing down to the last model, no matter the odds.
he is a huge points sink, but he is also the mostsurvivingest thing that ever was. i cant see ever taking him, but i dont use etherials. If you are into that sort of thing i can see spending the points for the ease of mind.
On the other hand, etherials are HUGE fire magnets. i can see someone taking him just to soak up fire from the opponent while your stubborn army blows them away.
