well im starting out tau (getting some peices tomorow ) im going to be starting with just a 500 point army i think and well ive never played warhammer ever lol >.> but so far what im purchasing 100% sure: tau codex Tau Fire Warrior team x2.
so ill basicly have 24 fire warriors and 4 drones + a codex for anyone who doesnt wana do the math, or remember what those things come with. where u guys think i should go next to learn/build. im planning on getting a devilfish sniper drones or some kroot. discuss plz
Kroot are always a good buy, devilfish are useful, and some people like snipers. I for one hate snipers, as they're too immobile and weak.
Definately get a crisis suit commander, as you are required to take one now. Hammerheads are pretty much essential to a good list. Crisis suits, stealths kroot, and hammerheads are all great buys.
Hold off on buying sniper drones, broadsides, the sky ray, and piranhas. They can work, but it depends on what you're facing. I use broadsides myself but i'm in a vehicle heavy environment.
Vespids and ethereals really aren't worth the money you pay for them, their performance to points ratio just isn't very good.
Edit: Wait this is in the army list. Sorry but be careful next time, this goes in the other forum.

Ask yourself why in the world would you trust a win loss record? Playing them yourself is the only way to tell.
The true joy in the game is playing down to the last model, no matter the odds.
thx for the reply so fast but anyways. ive heard from ALOT of people (including 2 of my friends who play tau) that sniper drones own up small games. i wasnt planing on getting vespids either, nor eth's they look ugly and personaly i wouldnt waste my money on them yet, maybe whne i bump to 1k points (coming soon ) thx a bunch
ok if you want some more advice here it is. unit by unit.
Crisis commander: You HAVE to take one. Many people have names for different combonations of gun for this guy. Don't give him a bodyguard or he loses his independant character benefits.
Ethereal: SUCK! ACK DONT GET. THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELLS THEE!!!!!!!!! really they aren't good, if he dies, there goes a lot of your Tau army.
Crisis Suits: I myself wont be able to answer this fully seeing as I dont really care as much about them as others. Sorry.
Stealth suits: the coolio thing about them is that they are great for light infantry units, Impeerial Guard, Tyranids, Orks. The can infiltrate, so you get closer to the enemy. Their stealth field kicks butt! and they work best with a Jump-Shoot-Jump tactic. What you do is during the move phase, get them out of cover, shoot during shooting phase, and during the assault phase, move them back behind cover.
FW: Looks like youve got these guys covered. Dont give them a marker drone or shield drones. Maybe consider a devilfish for one squad.
Kroot: the coll thing about Kroot are they are cheap. Their fieldcraft ability allows you to shoot up to 12" out of cover (6" is the normal) and they aren't slowed by forrests and hills. No shaper, they suck and dont get Krootox, they cause you to lose infiltrate. Hounds are awsome get some if you get kroot.
Gun Drone Squad: these guys aren't really cost effective. sure you can deep strike them and kill a tank at rear armor, but thats it. also use JSJ for them
Vespids: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DONT GET THESE!!! the cosy waaaaay too much (money and points) and aren't all that good.
Pathfinders: they can quickly make a battle turn to your favor, the markerlights can work wonders against squads. Id definently suggest some of these.
Piranahs: IMO (in my opinion) dont get these guys, to me, they seem like they will get easily blows to pieces by turn 2
Hammerhead: The best thing for a HH is the rail gun, especially considering it has the submunition round. One thing, get a multi tracker for them so that you can move 12" and still be able to fire the rail gun (normally 6" is the max) also, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS move every skimmer at least 6" on your turn, that way if they are shot at, only glancing hits are scored.
Skyray: IMO dont get, the seeker missles are one shot one target only, they dont have a blast marker or anything, if you get a Skyray, Id suggest you build a HH instead (parts in the skyra box also)
Broadsides: These guys are awsome! but dont get them until 1500 army or 2000 army. in my 2000 point army i have 3 they best function to kill tanks and important baddies. plus they are expensive (35$ a pop!)
Snipers: Hey I like them, 36" range, str6 AP3 problem is, I like my 2nd HH more
So here IMO is what you should get ASAP!
Crisis suit commander, 40k rulebook, paints and paint them now. Trust me in both my 2000 point armies (Tau and Nids) I have over 180 models to paint ::shudders:: please god someone help me!
Damn the greenbeans! -East of Eden
Black Templar W.I.P
i really like vespids, they are speedy, ok in close combat, and under cover their higher toughness really helps out. between all that, and that they remind me of lovecraftian horrors, makes for one of my favoite models in the army.
dont take pathfinders in anytihng less than a 1500 point game. they are handy, but cost around 200 points and are prettymuch only support. some people stretch it with 1000 point games, but that reduces their combat ability in a big way.
hammerheads with railguns are good, but in small games i would take an ion cannon equipped one 9/10 times. they are cheaper, and the ion cannon is a fearsome weapon against light vehicles and +3 saves alike. i really only take railguns for monolith removal, because they horrify me. they are sort of expensive points wise. in a 1000 point game however i would suggest an ion head and a broadside, with fusion blaster support from crisis/stealth/pirahna/shadowsun.
what was this thread about again? oh yeah. i like sniper drones as well, they are really fragily, but they have good power and a markerlight, i suggest putting them in cover or near a firewarrior team for protection.
All of which makes me anxious, sometimes unbearably so
