I thought that i would create a thread That lists all the Competitive Mainstream lists that us tyranid players like to use.
Now I myself have only heard of 3 mainstream lists that seem to do well in overall:
*Godzilla Nid List
This one seems to be a lot of peoples favorites and turns up at tournies all the time. It features around 5 carnifexus and 2 hive tyrants with rippers and/or genestealers for some filler troop choices
* Swarm Army
I hear people talk a lot about this sort of list but have yet to see many of them around. They basically feature lots and lots of gaunts with Synapse support in between. The premise of the army is to simply overrun the enemy with bodies.
* The Mix
this is my favorite, it is basically an even mix of TMC's and Swarms of gaunts to make a balanced army representing most of tyranids Unit types.
i will edit this list as we go along to narrow down the main lists that people use.
I was wondering if people could please post here what you think is the most common or most cookie cutter tyranid builds here. or simply argue what builds belong here or not, open floor later on i will try to find links to examples of each list.
Life is Nothing without challenge
This type of thread is exacly what I was looking for. I think you should include basic tactics for each arch type as well, as they very according to the army.
I currently play a swarm (lots of stealers and hormaguants)
Let me know what point cost the lists should be and I can post some later as examples.

Godzilla Nid List:
HQ: 2 Hive Tyrants, each w/ 2x TL Devourers, ES, EC, plus some goodies
(the devourers take advantage of the HT's high base of attacks)
Elite: 3 Fexes each w/ 2x TL Devourers and ES
(a nice, cheap, shooty fex variant)
Troop: Rippers, maybe with leaping
(to bog down advancing cc units)
(to rush in and cut down anyone who gets too close)
Heavy: 3 Fexes each w/ VC, BS, ES, RC, EC, plus some goodies
(expensive, but both long range and extremely volatile)
HQ: Winged Hive Tyrant w/ scythes/devourers/both, toxin sacs, plus some goodies
(front-line synapse support is a must)
HQ/Elite/FA: Warriors of any kind, flying, shooty, leaping-cc
(all are good backup synapse/gaunt support options)
(hormies for speed, other variants for numbers/staying power)
(to pick off the units that the gaunts tie up)
Heavy: Zoanthropes w/ synapse and another power of your choice
(very durable synapse platforms)
The Mix: Combines elements from these two lists.
I didn't mention Lictors, raveners or any others because I didn't think they were absolutely necessary for these lists. These I think are the basics, everyone's army is a little different in the end though.
Tyranids: 2500 pts
Imperial Guard: 1000 pts
Witch Hunters: 1000 pts
There is also themed lists - although I guess that could come under "Mixed".
Most common "Themed" one that the younger players come up with is the Genestealer list (Broodlord for HQ and lots of Genstealer units).
There is also the lightning strike list (fast assault) - everything is leaping, flying or deep strikes.
Im sure there are other themed ones that people use.
I'd say you're missing one type of list also, basicall the CC list. Armies, such as the one I prefer to run, that are compose of almost nothing but genestealers, hormies, maybe a CC group of wariors, or a CC tyrant. Personally, I'd say that it isn't a swarm list, and it isn't exactly a mixed list either, hence why I'd argue for it as it's own grouping.
