Welcome to Librarium Online!
Right, the following army list is to take on Tau.
I've used every model I have so far (just got back into Tyranids) with the exception of 10 genestealers. So plz, no saying "get 100 more gaunts" or anything like that coz the game is on Saturday and I don't have time to go shopping.
All help is appreciated.
Broodlord - FT, EC, TS, IA, FH - 108 pts
Retinue - 6xGenstealers wit EC and FH - 126pts
8xHormagaunts - 80 pts
8xHormagaunts wit AS (+1I) - 88pts
Red Terror - 104pts
Lictor - 80pts
3xWarriors wit EC, ST, RC, AG (+1I), Leaping - 114pts
Gunfex - VC, BS, ES, RC (+1W) - 163pts
Heavy Dakkafex - 2xTLDevourer, ES, SB, RC (+1W), AG (+1WS) - 137pts
Total - 1000pts
I can change the configuration on the Dakkafex (thanks to magnets on the carnifex).
Is it worth getting rid of the implant attacks on the Broodlord and the AG on the Hormagaunts and giving one of the Carnifexs bonded exoskeleton? Or something along those lines.
Any good tactics would be appreciated as well as constructive critisism.
hmm seems good and i often use similar units against tau which pay for their points and then some.
although its only 3 points u really dont need the feeder tendrils on the brood lord as him and his retinue usually hit on 3s anyway and cant keep up with the hormagaunts.
i would put in one thing but you would have to make some space. id take a zoanthrope with warp blast and synapse creature as it always helps to have a bit more synapse and rending claws dont always take care of tanks hence the warp blast.
personally i steer clear of lictors but against tau these are very useful. just deep strike them into terrain within 6 of the unit assault and thats 20 or so fire warriors taken care of for a while.
no problems with this army except maybe drop a fex in favour of more small units. rail guns and ion cannons often take care of fexs before they can do much damage. if you were to drop one i would recommend the always overlooked rippers with wings. they dont get shot at and tye up the enemy fairly quick and they're quite cheap
i hope this helps but honestly i think youd do fine without any of my changes. also this army would do great against armies like marines.
Sir we have a lock on the Hive tyrant.
NO! SHOOT THAT SPORE MINE! OH GOD, ITS GOING BACKWARDS!
if someone helps you, give them rep.
Ok, decent list against Tau, with the brood lord and retunue. But, 2 more stealers would really help in taking in hits. And, talking Feeder tendrills on the Brood Lord??? I never take it unless its against other nids, he is gona hit on a 3 for sure.
For the Gaunts, in squads of eight they will get wasted, but if you are going for bare amount of troops i understand. Just get ride of the AS(+1 I), cause the tau Initiative is aready partetic, so its juts a waste.
ELITES: The lictor is an excellent Idea. if you can, deepstike it next to the etherial, and kill it. That way, he has to take leadership for all his units:sleep:
The warriors are also good, they will shred entire squads of his tau.:w00t:
HEAVY: The dakka fex is perfect. He will take handfuls of em down a turn, and with him tanked out, he has an excellent chance of pissing off the Tau:shifty:
The gun fex is all round good. decennt againts armour, and the BS will be good a packed tau.
Over all, this is an excllent 1000pt list, and it will do nicely, the only thing thats gonna be wasted are the guants.
One Shot, One Kill
I know that these are the only models that you have, but I have one issue with the list (rest of it looks great). The broodlord is to slow against Tau IMO. He looks INSANE on paper, and it if you get him in combat he is. I used him in a 4 game tourney this weekend. He basically only did well against orcs, he rushed straight at him. Against Tau I would be nervous that as he slowly marches towards, they'll shoot him to death. If you do use him, make sure that you keep him in cover as best you can. Good luck!
Latest Battle: Tau win against DA!
The feeder tendrils were their to make up the points to be honest.
I think they might come in handy when i get the hormagaunts up into combat near them (Broodlord is going to infiltrate). As he's gonna infiltrate, don't you think that the increased size of the brood (adding 2 will take it to 8 plus broodlord), will be too difficult to infiltrate?
I would love to add more hormagaunts to the brood, I will do when I buy some more models.
Zoanthropes are also on my shopping list, as well as gaunts, but until then the only thing that I could add are an extra brood of genestealers, and as they have no cover (gaunt screen), I won't be fielding them.
If I got rid of the +1I on the gaunts, and the feeder tendrils, what would I use the extra 11 points for? Any ideas?
Thanks for the tips guys. Any more comments are welcome.

well, if you only free up 11 points, you could use it for a toxin spore mine.
You could also put toxin sacs on your warriors. Um... I can't think of anything else, but either of those, in particular buffing the warriors, would be points better spent than where they are right now (in my opinion.
That's an idea.
Don't have a toxic spore mine...
Will the increase in strength really be worth losing the ability to have extra broods hitting on 3's and the increase in I on the hormagaunts? I don't know what the average toughness of tau is.....
Just curious to know what everyone else thinks.
I gotta say that broodlord is completely out of place against tau. Even your lowly hormigaunts are likely to wipe out an entire tau army in CC given the chance, but the broodlord is much to slow to contribute anything. Also take the initiave bonus off your hormies, we have I3 anyway. Lots of fast units and shooty fexes...good. ^_^
Tau are toughness 3 (I'm pretty sure) most of them are WS 2-3, so you hit on 3's anyway. Their init is 3 at the most (not including kroot) so that won't matter either.
While I do agree that hormies are plenty nasty against tau, and that the broodlord likely is overkill I say keep him. Either, the tau are going to unload everything they have on him, therefore allowing your hormies to get into close combat, or he's going to unlaod on the hormies, allowing th broodlord to get into CC. Either way, you are going to have lots and lots of dead tau once you hit his lines.
Well, if anyone has any other ideas about the 8 points (if i take off the extra I), let me know. Toxic Sacs on the warriors sounds cool, but I think they'll get shot to pieces before I get to use it. I'll defo think about it....
My friend will no doubt aim to take out the warriors as quick as possible. With the red terror, lictor, and infiltrating broodlord Im just gonna try to give him far too many targets to deal with. The broodlord will use the genestealers as a screen. That's the plan.
If I had the choice I would of been fielding a winged tyrant instead of the broodlord, but I don't have the tyrant yet.
EDIT: Just had an idea. If I remove the +1I from the hormagaunts, and a genestealer from the retinue it frees up 29 points. 9 points gives the warriors toxic sacs and 20 points can be spent on giving the dakkafex +1T.
What about that? Would that work?
