I play IG, and I'm thinking of taking a contingent of Kroot to go with my army's theme of a large merc band. Thus, what function could they perform? With Light Infantry my units get Infiltrate, and are better at shooting and harder to kill (for the points). I don't think they can stand up to Khorne Berserkers in melee. Is there really any role that they perform well?

Kroot are much more capable in assault than IG, 3 attacks on the charge and the Shapers get eviscerators (chainfist equiv, 4 attacks on the charge:yes. Also, we get assault specialists: winged infiltrators and infiltrators w/ fleet. On top of that, we get blood of the stalker, allowing us to infiltrate D6 inches closer. Guaranteed turn 1 charge with cheap, killy assault troops and the Shaper.
And if assault isn't your bag, we have cheap snipers and the ever-customizable Shaper Council.

Well for assualt you can get first turn charges with hounds and vultures. Cheap snipers are great I almost always take a squad in my DE list. Other wise you can use them as a counter charge unit to help in close combat.
