Welcome to Librarium Online!
I moved this to a new topic so it wasn't buried in my previous post. I wanted an army that was good for friendly and competitive games in my local shop. I will be facing mostly tau, tyranids, and few scattered orks/chaos. Tanks will be rare for now.
Here's what I came up with for my 1000pt version
HQ- Farseer - 78
- Not everything I wanted, but had to keep low cost to maintain the rest of the army. Using storm to hopefully force pinning and probably helping against tyranid swarms
Troop - Dire avengers 177
Power weapon + shimmershield
- pumping out shots, tarpit, and provide target for enemy fire
Troop - Pathfinders 120
5 man squad
-Infiltrate and sniper key targets
Elite - Scorpions 212
-infiltrate and cause all kinds of problems for opposition
Fast Attack - Warp Spiders 272
-deep strike and rain some destruction
Heavy - Wraithlord 140
- setup to keep costs somewhat low. I know I won't be facing tons of tanks, which is a bonus.
Total army cost = 999pts
comments are most welcome
Looks Good. I can't find many faults with it.
Eldritch Storm is rarely good as a standalone power. It's mostly there to combine with doom or fortune to give him some offensive powers. Or if he's in a tank. Mind War would be much better here I think. Or fortune for the warp spiders is even better. Drop Surprise assault too if you want fortune. In fact surprise assault isn't generally recommended anyway.
I was also thinking of maybe the following:
Drop the farseer, turn the lance into a missile launcher, drop stalker and all the spider exarch upgrades and if necessary drop a spider or two. Then add an avatar, it looks like it would help your army a lot. That's a huge change though so its up to you.
yeah, of all the HQ choices, I really wanted the avatar. Unfortunately, with the current setup, it would put me 76pts over the 1k mark (after removing the farseer of course). I was very concerned with removing 76 points worth of troops/upgrades to put him in.
how much of a gamble would that be?
also, mind war was a very strong contender for power (even point swap), but i ended up siding with storm for pie plate template attack considering the enemies i'll be facing more regularly.
unless it can be worked around, avatar will probably be my first army upgrade when our games break 1k pts.
Oh, another question. Is the wraithlord in trouble without a warlock nearby?
thanks in advance
The farseer can take care of wraithsight just like a warlock. Keep the seer around him and you'll be fine.
Powerblades and withdraw are nice on a spider exarch but hardly essential. Also 8 man spider squads are perfectly fine, they're one of the few aspect squads that don't need to be maxed out.
Dropping upgrades for the avatar won't really hurt you that much. If you do take him you'll have to take wraithsight tests again but hey, sometimes you just bite the bullet.
Overall I'd say buy the list you have now and then buy an avatar. Swap lists around each game to see which you like.
That is a good plan LordLink. I'll be working on assembling this list.
If anyone else have suggestions, I'm interested in all the points of view I can get.
Personally I think that taking fortune for the spiders is a terrible idea. With the slow movement rate of the seer he will likely only be close enough to fortune them on the first turn. As far as getting the avatar is concerned, I just want you ti be sure that you understand that he is not likely to survive past the second turn. The only way to help keep him around is to have a farseer fortuning him.
The spider exarch does not really "Need" any of the upgrades that he can get but if you are going to drop them then you might as well drop the exarch from the list entirely. Personally I have found powerblades and withdraw to be very helpful in my games but the choice is yours.
IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT!
I survived LO Chat thanks to: Karmoon, Rabbit, Process, Tossy and Meish.
Ironangel, thank you for your comments here and in my first thread.
I went back and looked at the wraithlord options again, and i agree with you that considering the points spent, I wiould be better served using the cannon instead of the sword.
I'll be changing that for the list.
I know this thread is really old but its the only chance I've had to get on the internet lately.
Spiders can only be fortuned turn 1? avatar needs fortune to survive? sounds to me like turn 1 you fortune the spiders and every other turn its the avatar...
However you really can't have both a seer and avatar in 1k points.
Be aware IronAngel this is only 1000 points, it has nowhere near the kind of anti-tank as the bigger games. It's a well known principle that the more large targets you have the more they will survive as your opponent splits firepower. Also the avatar's 4++ save helps him survive and deter enemy guns onto the wraithlord.
A wraithlord being alone means he will get gunned down turn 2, having an avatar with him will help both of them.
It also means he should dominate close combat in the game. Looking at the list it looks like he would dominate all aspects of the game as he can outshoot, outrun AND outfight most enemies.
I wouldn't bother with the Avatar personally instead i'd rather put the farseer on a jetbike. makes a good anti tank and if your going to keep it on the ground i'd drop the spear for just a normal S.Pis and CCW.
''Quality Over Quantity''
LordLink, Don't worry about the age of the thread as I still check it for more input
How would you fit an avatar in that list pointwise? I was thinking of lowering my point use on the dire avenger exarch upgrades...maybe going for just the assault 4 option for all shooty and let the rest of the army handle CC.
I do think an avatar would serve me better than a stripped down seer.
